Happy Dust

I’m really into this track because it stands out as a B-Side I mean it’s so unique compared to the other stuff Ministry was doing around that Filth Pig/Dark Side of the Spoon era.

The track almost sounds like some of the classic instrumentals on Land of Rape and Honey. I wish Ministry had explored more of this type of shit.

Anyway I was wondering do you guys think “Happy Dust” is an example of the new ambient direction that Ministry had supposedly been experimenting with but then scrapped prior to releasing Dark Side of the Spoon?

I am so interested to hear the stuff Al and Paul had been working on. Looking back on some Paul Barker interviews circa Dark Side of the Spoon’s release, he talks about how they scrapped the material because it became very meticulous and it was taking them too long to create the songs. He says anything that is too involved isn’t worth doing or something like that.

Don’t get me wrong I love Dark Side of the Spoon but I would also like to hear this ambient shit and I think “Happy Dust” might have been a precursor to this new direction.

who knows, maybe it is their “ambient scrapped stuff”, maybe not. either way, of course i’d love to hear canned material and some demos! oh and i dig the track too btw.

I like the song, too, however I always felt it was just them screwing around with a spaghetti western theme song. Cool tune, but definitely b-side material.

I always thought this track sounded like it could have been an intro or something used at the beginning of a show. It would be cool to hear a whole album of stuff like this if it exists. I couldn’t see it being released as Ministry, but it could have been another side project.

Acid Horse 1999

hehe, cool, 1002

One of my favorite Ministry songs, of any era. I’d love to hear an entire album of material like this (or even just an EP), but as stubbourn as Al seems to be I doubt it’ll ever surface. It’s too bad really.

It’s too bad really.

i agree. YAY FOR ANTIBUSH METAL!!! :frowning:

Heh, it’s strange, but on the way home from dinner tonight, I’m listening to Sirius and get an ‘Artist Alert’ for Ministry on Hard Attack 27. I figure it’s Senor Peligro, but when I switch over, it’s Filth Pig. I found myself pleasantly surprised. They’ve played this song before, but I hadn’t listened to that album in quite some time, and I have to admit is was nice not hearing the Bush samples and aggro-thrash beats for a change. I might have to spin that album again, and see how I feel about it 10 years later.

Is anyone else here surprised that Ministry is skipping over three recent albums on this tour? A Ministry show in 2006 should be full of variety…in theory. I know Al has mixed feelings on Dark Side; makes me wonder if he is going to disown it like he did for With Sympathy. He’s wacky like that.

Happy dust should of been on dark side instead of the very lame summertime song. IMHO summertime song should of been the forgotten b-side for dark side. It’s to bad filth pig, dark side, and animositisomina are being overlooked on this tour and their history. I would be curious what Paul Barker thinks of ministry’s sound right now? I still think dark side of the spoon was a very innovative record and liked it better than filth pig. Loved the jazz influence on dark side.

not surprising. that’s a shame, real shame. but what are you gonna do? al’s getting kicks from metal stuff right now. they could stick in reload, bad blood and animosity/unsung in there at the very least, as these songs aren’t “slow” and i think would fit in this house/grande 50/50 setlist. here’s the list of albums that al doesn’t like at all or doen’t like that much: with sympathy (abortion), the mind is a terrible thing to taste (he said it in a couple of interviews that mind seems pretty mediocre to him, wtf?), dark side of the spoon (he said something like yes, it’s bad, “but i had to get that shit out of me”). also al wasn’t that excited (compared to his hype of houses and grande) about animositisomina.

dead on. that summertime song is probably just fuckaround “secret” track. you can actually hear al singing “summertime, summertime” in one of the channels along with that girl. happy dust would have been much cooler.

yes! yet they butchered it a bit before the release. why the fuck they removed wacky samples from supermanic soul? why the hell cut out lovely crazy sax/bass solo in the end of step? i also would like 10/10 to be longer as well. =)

i hope that barker will create something in the vein of dark side/animositisomina or anything like that. instead of producing faggy bands. pink anvil and lead into gold are too experimental for me in general. =)

sometimes i think different though. maybe if al sort of put ministry “on hold” after psalm tours were over and released filthpig and dark side under a different project name, it would go better. then release animositisomina as another ministry album and houses and rio grande as “buck satan’s anti-bush band” or something. cuz you can kida see progression from twitch to psalm and then ministry goes in all different directions like a mad pinball machine ball. or something. even the new revco is totally different from the “real” one. etc.

Happy Dust is on the Japanese Import copy of DSOTS… not sure if it’s right after the last track or before summertime… but it’s on there.

Hmmm I don’t agree here I think Filth Pig and Dark Side of the Spoon are definitely Ministry records. In fact one of the things I most admired about pre-Houses of the Mole Ministry was their refusal to simply backtrack and cash in on their platinum success by shitting out another Psalm 69.

I love when artists put out a really successful record and then do a 180 degree turn with the next one, proving they can be versatile and that they desire to challenge the public instead of cashing in on their success. Marilyn Manson also did this by putting out Mechanical Animals after Antichrist Superstar. He totally mindfucked everyone and challenged what they thought he was and how his music should be. This kind of legitimized him for me since the whole “Satanic” industrial metal thing was getting old anyway.

As for removing “Linda Summertime” from Dark Side of the Spoon, fuck that I think that song is fuckin hilarious and a good closer for such a drugged out album. Always makes me chuckle.

Instead they should have left of “Whip or Chain” or whatever because that song fuckin BLOWS and put “Happy Dust” on the record (although I’m not sure how well it would mesh with the other songs)

I’m surprised you don’t like Pink Anvil though, gila. It seems like it would be right up your alley if you dig Dark Side of the Spoon and Animositisomina. In fact some of the tracks on Halloween Party are Animositisomina outtakes. I really like that record and there are some definite song structures there upon further listens. That CD keeps growing on me. You should give it another listen…play it in the background while you are doing something else instead of sitting there and concentrating on it. That seems to be the ideal way to listen to an experimental record because if you concentrate on it you might be frustrated by the lack of accessibility but if you sort of zone out and focus on something else you might suddenly find yourself digging it.

This is how I listen to most of my Merzbow stuff etc. that is challenging and hard to enjoy when focusing on it directly.

As for Lead Into Gold I always thought they had quite a bit of pop to their sound I mean a lot of the songs have pretty strong hooks etc. I was actually surprised and dissappointed by the accessibility of most of it.

i dunno how that stuff can be called animositisomina outtakes  yes, i know it was in the interview but they probably modified them too much.

Well I could probably pinpoint the exact songs that are Animositisomina outtakes. I think it’s the tracks “Downer” “Sugerwater” and “Near Death” if I’m not mistaken…They are basically industrial metal tracks, but for Pink Anvil purposes are buried under more distortion than the original versions probly were and have some more sound effects thrown on top than they would have had they been on Animositisomina.

I mean it’s not like they just edited the recordings of the Animositisomina outtakes; they re-recorded everything from the live performance so these songs were performed live meaning Al’s guitar parts from the original would have been replaced by Barker on bass or something I guess…

yea, i would imagine. then again you can’t actually call them “animositisomina outtakes” cuz interview says that when they played some shit that they made together (paul+max) al kinda “liked and took some stuff” for album. i guess it was leper.

animositisomina is great and it has no throw off tracks. main complaint is that there are huge amount of clipping on piss.

Whats the deal with merzbow? I havnt heard any, but always hear people rave about it. Any suggestions? From what I hear, random mp3s probably won’t do it justice?

I only own four albums, and two of those are collaborations with other artists - I’m not the one here to tell you where to start. What I’m getting at, though, is that there seems to be at least one album for whatever kind of music you’re into. You like straightforward noise? There’s plenty of that for you. More structured, beat oriented electronic music? Got that too. I have yet to hear a Merzbow metal album, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
Looking at the “Merzbox,” I think there are something like 50 cd’s available…I guess a starting point depends on what you’re into, honestly.
I just know that I like everything I’ve heard so far, but most especially the Merzbow vs. Alec Empire (of Atari Teenage Riot) disc live from CBGB’s. Good stuff.

I wish Ministry had explored more of this type of shit.

You’re a sexy, sexy boy.

Anyway I was wondering do you guys think “Happy Dust” is an example of the new ambient direction that Ministry had supposedly been experimenting with but then scrapped prior to releasing Dark Side of the Spoon?

No. It has more of a ‘south of the border’ feel to it.

Don’t get me wrong I love Dark Side of the Spoon but I would also like to hear this ambient shit and I think “Happy Dust” might have been a precursor to this new direction.

well…nuts to you.

Whats the deal with merzbow?

I think ‘the deal with merzbow’ should be the least of yr concerns, mr pink.

Concentrate on grammer/articulation first and then we’ll talk business.

Comprendez?
