Is anyone else here surprised that Ministry is skipping over three recent albums on this tour? A Ministry show in 2006 should be full of variety…in theory. I know Al has mixed feelings on Dark Side; makes me wonder if he is going to disown it like he did for With Sympathy. He’s wacky like that.
not surprising. that’s a shame, real shame. but what are you gonna do? al’s getting kicks from metal stuff right now. they could stick in reload, bad blood and animosity/unsung in there at the very least, as these songs aren’t “slow” and i think would fit in this house/grande 50/50 setlist. here’s the list of albums that al doesn’t like at all or doen’t like that much: with sympathy (abortion), the mind is a terrible thing to taste (he said it in a couple of interviews that mind seems pretty mediocre to him, wtf?), dark side of the spoon (he said something like yes, it’s bad, “but i had to get that shit out of me”). also al wasn’t that excited (compared to his hype of houses and grande) about animositisomina.
Happy dust should of been on dark side instead of the very lame summertime song. IMHO summertime song should of been the forgotten b-side for dark side.
dead on. that summertime song is probably just fuckaround “secret” track. you can actually hear al singing “summertime, summertime” in one of the channels along with that girl. happy dust would have been much cooler.
I would be curious what Paul Barker thinks of ministry’s sound right now? I still think dark side of the spoon was a very innovative record and liked it better than filth pig. Loved the jazz influence on dark side.
yes! yet they butchered it a bit before the release. why the fuck they removed wacky samples from supermanic soul? why the hell cut out lovely crazy sax/bass solo in the end of step? i also would like 10/10 to be longer as well. =)
i hope that barker will create something in the vein of dark side/animositisomina or anything like that. instead of producing faggy bands. pink anvil and lead into gold are too experimental for me in general. =)
sometimes i think different though. maybe if al sort of put ministry “on hold” after psalm tours were over and released filthpig and dark side under a different project name, it would go better. then release animositisomina as another ministry album and houses and rio grande as “buck satan’s anti-bush band” or something. cuz you can kida see progression from twitch to psalm and then ministry goes in all different directions like a mad pinball machine ball. or something. even the new revco is totally different from the “real” one. etc.
Hmmm I don’t agree here I think Filth Pig and Dark Side of the Spoon are definitely Ministry records. In fact one of the things I most admired about pre-Houses of the Mole Ministry was their refusal to simply backtrack and cash in on their platinum success by shitting out another Psalm 69.
I love when artists put out a really successful record and then do a 180 degree turn with the next one, proving they can be versatile and that they desire to challenge the public instead of cashing in on their success. Marilyn Manson also did this by putting out Mechanical Animals after Antichrist Superstar. He totally mindfucked everyone and challenged what they thought he was and how his music should be. This kind of legitimized him for me since the whole “Satanic” industrial metal thing was getting old anyway.
As for removing “Linda Summertime” from Dark Side of the Spoon, fuck that I think that song is fuckin hilarious and a good closer for such a drugged out album. Always makes me chuckle.
Instead they should have left of “Whip or Chain” or whatever because that song fuckin BLOWS and put “Happy Dust” on the record (although I’m not sure how well it would mesh with the other songs)
I’m surprised you don’t like Pink Anvil though, gila. It seems like it would be right up your alley if you dig Dark Side of the Spoon and Animositisomina. In fact some of the tracks on Halloween Party are Animositisomina outtakes. I really like that record and there are some definite song structures there upon further listens. That CD keeps growing on me. You should give it another listen…play it in the background while you are doing something else instead of sitting there and concentrating on it. That seems to be the ideal way to listen to an experimental record because if you concentrate on it you might be frustrated by the lack of accessibility but if you sort of zone out and focus on something else you might suddenly find yourself digging it.
This is how I listen to most of my Merzbow stuff etc. that is challenging and hard to enjoy when focusing on it directly.
As for Lead Into Gold I always thought they had quite a bit of pop to their sound I mean a lot of the songs have pretty strong hooks etc. I was actually surprised and dissappointed by the accessibility of most of it.
