Favorite Albums from 2008

So I guess we do this every year, so we might as well start now. Favorites for 2008?

Mine are:

Flowering Blight - As if there was any doubt, this unexpected gem tops my list. Didn’t think it would ever come out and then… one day it just gets released without warning. Unlike so many albums with this kind of anticipation, it absolutely exceeded expectations. It’s got everything I love about Paul’s songwriting and was executed perfectly. My absolute favorite for the year and I’m sure it’ll be on several other lists.

Leatherstrip - Retention Vol 2 - The first disc is just Claus’ second album remastered, nothing amazing there. And I was pretty skeptical when I heard that the second disc was simply rerecorded versions of the songs from the first disc. Luckily I happened to catch the rerecorded version of GAWM and was absolutely hooked. These songs are all much-improved and in some cases unrecognizable (in a good way). Imagine Al rewriting and rerecording Twitch and somehow making it better. This is the equivalent for Strip-fans.

Die Warzau - Vinyl 88 - This one was way underpromoted (I just discovered that it came out a few weeks ago) and contains a lot of previously released tracks, but at least it’s all remixed and I’ll take what DW I can get. Now if only they’d come out with the promised full-length or the long-anticipated Republic.

Imatem - Journey - I thought it odd that the singer for Project Pitchfork would come out with an album full of guest-vocalists, but it really works. Some real stand-outs on this one, if you’re into the Pitchfork/VNV type thing.

Imperative reaction - Minus All - These guys have really impressed me with their last few releases. This one doesn’t disappoint.

Marnie Stern - This Is It - Don’t know why I like this one. It’s certainly outside my normal listening realm. Just enough weirdness to keep me interested, I guess.

Information Society - Apocryphon - I thought I’d like this more than I did, but it’s still worth it for the new version of Wrongful Death.

Leatherstrip - Civil Disobedience - Like the last couple albums, I really like the new Leatherstip sound. Claus keeps turning it our 2 and 3 discs at a time, which is just fine by me.

Psy’aviah - Entertainment Industries - I don’t usually like female vocals in electronic music, but this one’s a strong enough album to suck me in anyway.

REM - Accelerate - Yeah, I like REM. Not as good as the old classics, but definitely stronger than any of their past few albums.

Revco - Sexo Olympico - I guess it’s not really out yet, but who hasn’t heard it yet? Anyway, I like this one. Or at least most of it. You can tell that much of it was written by the Stayte guys. Parts almost seem like Al gave them topics to write about and let them pen the songs. Way better than the last album.

System Syn - End - I’ve been a fan of this guy’s since I heard his cover of Mentallo & The Fixer’s Ruthless. This one’s in the same vein, but different enough to still be interesting.

That’s a short list. This year I’ve really overwhelmed myself with music, so there are quite a few albums I haven’t had a chance to really delve into that will probably end up on there like Conor Oberst’s solo album, new Babyland, Cyanotic, Fixmer & McCarthy, Acumen’s second Artifacts compilation and Coil’s New Backwards.

Anyone else?

My list is very short cause iv been into older stuff this year, and 08 has been incredibly lame (music wise).

  1. NIN - The Slip - U already know Reznor is da boss
  2. Cyanotic - ep - mmm… industrial kick in the butt, u could say coldwave is back
  3. Tyske Ludder - Scientific Technology ep - ahh yes, german ebm it’ll make want to rape a raver repeatedly
  4. Blank - Impact Zone - just another futurefag band i mean pop… futurepop

As one can tell I didn’t take in a lot of new music this year, but that’s usually always the case.

This year was all about the great Jesu for me though. Only started listening to them this year and they are easily my favourite act at the moment and am eagerly anticipating a live show.

I’d like to talk about it more but am tight on time this week, so here’s my list:
in no particular order:
Lull- Like a Slow River (ok, this is album of the year for me, the rest in no order)
Final- Dead Air (2nd fav. album of the year, this one is GREAT)
Final- Fade Away
Final- Afar
ohGr- devil in my details
Pop Levi- Never Never Love
Legendary Pink Dots- Plutonium Blonde
Meat Beat Manifesto- Autoimmune

What, no Chinese Democracy? [:)]

Prurient - Cocaine Death

Help me out, is Cocaine Death significantly more interesting than his other releases? Because I keep hearing how awesome Prurient is, and after picking up a couple albums from him (Shipwrecker’s Diary, Arrowhead) I’ve been left feeling really pretty… well, bored I guess.
Lately I’ve heard that that Cocaine Death is sort of his pinnacle, but I’m skeptical.

Grumpy’s still putting his list together.

1002

Murder By Death - Red of Tooth and Claw - My favorite this year. Western/rock storytelling songs. These guys are the real bastard sons of Johnny Cash.

Flowing Blight - The Perfect Pair - Good old fashioned industrial the way God intended it. Beats the hell out of USSA, too.

Ladytron - Velocifero - I got hooked on this one. If I still djed I’d be playing the hell out of it.

NIN - Ghosts I-IV - More people are going to pick The Slip I’m sure, but that one didn’t actually do anything for me. I’ve found that I actually prefer Trent’s quieter, more haunting songs and, although a lot of stuff on here is rather half-baked, this album’s got a lot of that stuff.

Current 93 - Birth Canal Blues - Just an e.p., but one of the tracks is a sort of terrifying 21st Century update on Careful With That Axe Eugene.

Ohgr - The Devil In My Details - Sounds more like Skinny Puppy than the last two Skinny Puppy albums

Metallica - Death Magnetic - If this had come out in the mid-90s instead of Load, Metallica may never have become such a punchline.

Revolting Cocks - Sex-O Olympic-O - The best album that was supposed to come out this year but didn’t.

Marnie Stern

awesome pick.

didn’t pay too much attention to new releases, mostly catch stuff live on stage…

from what little stuff I had exposure to these stand out:

Krallice - s/t
Zs - hard ep
Extra Life - secular works
Vivian Girls - s/t
Grails - dommsdayers holiday
Trap Them - seizures in barren praise
Die! Die! Die! - promises promises
Wolves In The Throne Room - two hunters
Santogold - s/t
Genghis Tron - board up the house

other good stuff:
beehatch- beehatch
frozen rabbit- 26,000 (72 min track)
kone- cirrhotic psychotic
kone- on daddy’s farm
phil western- d.a.t. hell (2 disc set)
Yes I really enjoyed Phil Western’s releases of the past year or so. Considering he was about to quit making music period, he certainly made up for lost time. Wow I see you managed to snag a copy of 26,000 the long version. Only about 90 copies of that were made, and unfortunately at the time I did not have the cash to order it. Phil is one of the best electronic musicians out there right now. World’s End with Tim Hill is a must have album.

Phil’s music is awesome. I’ll admit that he put out more than I could afford this year, but Beehatch was fantastic! Did 1221 come out this year? That was freakin’ fantastic as well.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the remix Phil did for the Ka-baalim project I’m involved in. It’s available as a free download at: http://www.darkwinter.com/dw051.html

Dig it.

Cut Copy’s new album is my favorite for the year. I’ve been listening to that sucker regularly since it came out and I’m not even a little tired of it.

I’d have to be in front of my iTunes before delving deeper into my “Best of '08” list.

There is some good Prurient and some bad Prurient.

I will let you discover which is which - rather than attempt to play God.

Oh course how could I forget this, excellent stuff green death. 1221 came out in January this year it was a live show from 12-21-07. Damn I love what he did with Bob Ross, very trippy.

Did you get the free download of Phil vs. Longwalkshortdock from this spring? Its excellent as well, an hour long show with lots of Kone tracks played live. If not heres the url for the download.

Lull - Like A Slow River
Ascend - Ample Fire Within

I gotta side with Xtraterrestrial on this one. 2008 was a very retro year for me, as pretty much every record I picked up was either early Nineties industrial or early Nineties heavy metal… and a whole lotta Foetus.

That said, the only albums I listened to from this year were pretty fuckin’ good.

Leaether Strip: “Retention No. 2” (The update of “GAWM” is absolutely fantastic)
KMFDM: “Extra Vol. I” (Not an album per se, but it was my first introduction to their earlier singles)
RevCo: “Sexo Olympico” (Though I won’t have the physical copy for another few months)

New RevCo gets my nod as album of the year… at least until “The Perfect Pair” gets here. [:)]

Leatherstrip - Retention Vol 2 - The first disc is just Claus’ second album remastered, nothing amazing there. And I was pretty skeptical when I heard that the second disc was simply rerecorded versions of the songs from the first disc. Is that the one I see listed as “Science For the Satanic Spawn”? I was a huge Leather Strip fan for awhile in the mid-90s and lost interest, but this sounds intriguing.

Imatem - Journey - I thought it odd that the singer for Project Pitchfork would come out with an album full of guest-vocalists, but it really works. Some real stand-outs on this one, if you’re into the Pitchfork/VNV type thing.

Is there going to be a domestic release of this? I fileshared the track with Ronan Harris and it’s better than anything on the last VNV Nation album.
