Essential Death Metal?

Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick
Death - Human
Deicide - Deicide
Immolation - Close To A World Below
Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream
Entombed - Clandestine

I know there are a few death metal types on this forum (Olsen, Grindmonkey, Amlux) so let’s talk DEATH! To kick off, I’ve started a list of death metal albums I feel are essential to any collection. ANY collection! I’m not a big fan of death metal per se, but the above are all albums I couldn’t live without.

What Death Metal do y’all feel is essential? I don’t care if you mention any albums I’ve already listed, that’s cool. In fact I’d like to hear from you if you agree with me.

Anyone hate death metal?

I’ve only heard two of those! Never got around to hearing any Deicide, always had this idea that most of their input was on the generic side. The first Immolation album has some solid riffs enough to pique my curiosity.

Suffocation - Pierced from Within
Crytopsy - None So Vile
Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity

Every Death album is worth listening to. Very rewarding band when you start noticing how their sound progressed through the years.

Man I tried all of those on you tube. The only one I could even begin to dig even a little bit was the Death track. growly vocals really just turn me off.

edit Didn’t check Nick’s list I’ll try that now
Suffocation- “pierced from within” pretty good tune. I like the drums. I checked out the live from waken festival video… pretty funny to hear that dude growl and then sound like a pencil neck geek when he’s yammerin on about the rain after the song was done.

My fave post from the cryptopsy crown of horns youtube board

Capricornus Rex in tenebris

I long to feel the dark caress

Of your cloven hooves;

I seek the loving warmth of your anus

As I place my worshipful

Lips about your teats.

lyrics /rotfl

music was ok but again the vocals… -5

Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity… I’ll pass

gonna go check out some obituary on youtube. I remember the slowly we rot cover creeped me out as a jr. higher!

I probably need to spend a good hour or so on this topic, but I don’t have the time at the mo’…but I will start by saying…

The Greatest Death Metal Albums Ever

Morbid Angel - Covenant
Entombed - Clandestine
Pestilence - Testimony Of The Ancients
Obituary - Cause Of Death
Deicide - Deicide
Death - Leprosy
Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade
Carcass - Necrotism…
Asphyx - Asphyx
Sadistik Exekution - The Magus
Deicide - Legion
Immolation - Here In After
Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick
Nocturnus - The Key

That’s kinda for starters. And there were a few that fell between genres (ie death/thrash) that I didn’t include.

Some ‘essentials’:

Deicide - Legion
Brutal Truth - Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses
Demilich - Nespithe
Death - Symbolic
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Entombed - Clandestine
Vader - De Profundis
Edge Of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow
Obituary - Cause Of Death
Suffocation - Effigy Of The Forgotten
Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious

There are actually very many high quality death metal releases out there, the above list is very incomplete. I’ve been into death metal for a very long time and it still hasn’t bored me.

Most of my ‘classics’ have already been mentioned - Entombed, Deicide, Morbid Angel, Pestilence.

I haven’t listened to much death metal in the last couple of years as my missus hates it more than she hates Nine Inch Nails - which is alot!

This a good list.

Paradise Lost '90-'93
Brujeria
(old) Impending Doom
I Ate Your Math Teacher [laugh]

this thread’s lack of Onward To Golgotha is pissing me off.

The deicide music is decent (actually all of the music is decent) I just can’t get past the vocals. I’d rather listen to country music. ok, that’s not true, but still, the vocals just take it to a level I don’t care for… gotta say, though, I really did like the obituary stuff. That guy straight sounded like a demon with out growling! very cool!
the slowly we rot cover still creeps me out though, even 25 years later.

Sadistik Exekution - The Magus

I would seriously not consider them to remotely resemble death metal.

Nor would their guitarist, who expressed that to me face-to-face two weeks ago.

Along with Damaged, one of those rare bands that bullshit labels need not apply to.

Well, I suppose we all need to boost our ‘forum status’ occasionally.

Wow none of you guys mentioned the fathers of Death Metal: Possessed. Shame on every single one of you

Yeah. Which is why you’re the one making snappy little comments like that [;)]

Sorry if people already may have mentioned these (I don’t want to reread everything), and please don’t go into some faggy argument over deathmetal versus melodic speed grind hatecore slaughter groove or something retarded. But these were always good, too:

At The Gates: Slaughter of the Soul
Dismember: Indecent and Obscene
Grave: Hating Life
