Dredd 3D

Just got back from this movie and it’s actually good, really really good. The sort of hard R violent action movie that harkens back to the good old days. It’s also a dead on recreation of the nihilistic Judge Dredd comics and beats the fucking pants off that stallone piece of crap. As a bonus it is beautifully shot and the drug scenes are suitably trippy. I know it’s not doing great in the states but if you’ve avoided it thinking its just another crappy remake, go out and see it.

Added bonus the 3D is actually good, which shocked the hell out of me.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago when it came out here, great film, Urban personifies Dredd in a way i never expected to see, having read the comics since the start of the 80s and suffered through Stallone’s helmetless take on it.

i was stoked on this movie because I was excited to see a rehash of a cheesy, hyperviolent Stallone movie. I walked out with a massive hard-on because the movie was actually really fucking good. I rarely pay to see flicks on the big screen, but this one was fucking ACE.

Again, props on the 3D. Not only was it relevant and well done, but I could actually see it. I have a really hard time seeing the 3D in a lot of movies, but this one wasn’t too bad on my brain.

Sadly it sounds like nobody really saw it in the US and it might be pretty tough for them to get the money together to make a sequel now. FUCK!!

I know, that really pisses me off. There were ideas for two future sequals too, they would have brought Judge Death in from what I heard, which would have been awesome. [pirate]

Hopefully it’ll pick up in other countries it’s yet to be released in, and i’m sure it’ll do well on dvd and blu ray. I suppose there have been plenty of sequels nobody ever wanted so maybe the luck is with us on this one.

i havent seen it yet, but i am a HUGE fan of the comics, so i still have reservations, even if the writer is a fan as well.

i have read that it is basically a fascist version of ‘The Raid’… and i can get behind that.

Damn… I’ll have to check this out asap then!

I usually write off remakes as crapolla, but I’ll take your word for it dudes.

I saw the ad for it and it seemed like the story of Robocop 2 (which is a generic story stolen a million times prior). A new drug is wrecking everyone and a criminal elite is taking over, blah blah blah.

I don’t read comics, but this movie does look pretty cool, nonetheless. I hope it makes it to a seatback video monitor sometime in my near future.

I don’t read comic books either and wasn’t crazy about the trailer, seemed boring… but we’ll see!!

Fingers crossed!

Regarding the comparisons with The Raid, apparently the script for Dredd has been knocking about for a couple of years online, and Gareth Evans, The Raid’s director was apparently approached at one point and shown the script for Dredd with a view to directing it. I think The Raid may have even been filmed after Dredd, but Dredd had big delays during post-production an wasn’t released until after The Raid, which was basically made cheap and fast and ripped off Dredd’s story. So any time you read aout how Dredd rips of The Raid, it’s actually the other way round.

I thought The Raid was good enough, but very overrated. It’s nothing new, i’ve seen much better.

cool, didnt know. also, didnt think it was a rip-off really. haha.

but i DO know that the original three scripts that Alex worked on for Dredd were VASTLY different to the finished movie. his first draft actually sounds like it would have been fucking CLASS. i love judge Death as a character.

also, i would have loved to have seen Necropolis or America get the movie treatment…

Sounds cool, i suppose they were pretty restricted by their small budget, but they managed to make a great looking, really enjoyable film of a character i’ve loved since the early, early days of 2000AD. Excellent film, Urban was perfect as Dredd

I haven’t seen it, but it’s nice to see Karl Urban in a starring role. I mainly know that guy for playing Julius Caesar in Xena. He was also that one guy in Lord Of The Rings. Eomer I think.

yeah, always been a huge Dredd fan, mostly because he is the ultimate anti-hero. he is the embodiment of the dangers of fascism, and yet i find myself wanting him to win. the comic is CLEARLY British in its dual fearful/fetishistic view of fascist extremism.

Absolutely. i remember as a kid those notions of fascism just sailed straight over my head, but then when i saw the number of harmless, funny little characters Dredd jailed (for stuff like having sugar in the house, hahaha) i caught on that he was a bit of a bastard as well.

Again, i have to say, Urban was great as Dredd, and gives a performance that’s not something that geared towards giving HIM exposure, he’s all about making it true to the character. Helmet stays on, he shows us everything just using his mouth, the only part of his face we can see for the duration of the film. It’s pure Clint Eastwood, too, which is exactly how i imagined Dredd to sound. I liked him in most of the things i saw him in, especially LOTR, and then i was blown away by his performance as Bones in Star Trek. I think Dredd might be his best yet, because even though he’s almost faceless, he still brings 35 years of a much-loved character to the screen perfectly.

Just saw this and it was a fucking blast!!!..great throwback to good old days of 80’s action…haha this film has no conscience whatsoever, just non-stop violence and mayhem…some beautiful stylized cinematography sequences that were strangely psychedelic and quite beautiful…I would highly recommend this for lovers of ultra violent action films…turn your brain off and enjoy the ride…so much fun…

I also watched this movie a few weeks ago after reading this thread way back.

All it was was Karl Urban making a :C face, followed by a slow motion play through and an electro beat. Literally every scene.

Idk I wasn’t crazy about it. Prefer the Stallone Dredd over this one

I would take the first 5 min of this new Dredd over the entire Stallone film…this new one was so much dumb fun,I can’t wait to see it again…
