Copyright doesn’t affect what anyone can play live. Venues pay a flat fee to the publishing companies to account for the fact that musicians often play cover songs in a live setting.
My speculation is that he probably doesn’t play much of the older stuff because the majority of it (all of it?) was co-written by at least one guy that he has some ill-will towards.
I just want to throw it out there that my little sister is visiting me. She is 13 years old. I’ve never really seen her in my life. I bought her an iPod Nano, and filled it with literally loads of shitty rock groups out there now, like Papa Roach, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, et al, because this is what she likes.
Yet, I still managed to throw in Jane’s Addiction, Beastie Boys, and, you guessed it, Ministry and Pailhead.
She’s still young…she’ll hear the “new sounds” and totally dig it.

Very cool! I wonder how long before the seeds you’ve planted take root, It’s almost like you’ve planted a trojan in her iPod!

I guess I’m luckier in the little sister department. I’ll never forget the pride I felt when I heard my little sister playing ‘Freezing Moon’ on bass the other day…
God my little sister listens to stuff like Dave Matthews, which to me is tantamount to trying to polish a turd with your ears.
Imagine my bemusement when she went to see NIN with Bauhaus. " Oh yeah my brother used to listen to those guys." [;)]
At least I got her to branch out a bit when we both went to see The Cure this last time around. Now that was a good gig, stripped down to a 4 piece and 35 songs.

Oh god. He is the epitome of musical stagnancy. I don’t get it. He seems to spearhead the musical contingent that believes practicing 10 hours a day and making music sound as cut and polished as possible… is a good thing. Sad. Tends to be worshipped by most college/university music students in their first and second years until their balls drop, voices break and they develop taste in music.
I call this ‘late stage Dave Matthews onset puberty’.
For “Crash Into Me” and “Satellite” I say to all you haters, Fuck You, those songs are beautiful.
For every other dave mathews song, I say, I can get behind everyone in their statements of “bland boringness”

That last tour really was a big fuck you to fans, I still regret a bit not going but I know I’d be really disappointed anyway.
So is Al ever going to be able to get the rights back to twitch? I’m not really sure how all that legal stuff works. Would love to hear it remastered, same with LORAH
I really don’t know who owns the right to Twitch. I’m assuming Warner. But, the bootleg of Twitch that came out five years ago had a msg on the label stating something to the effect of “these recordings were authorized by the producer for sale” or something. Which, would be Sherwood.
But, the label who put it out released unauthorized bootlegs of everyone - they actually got shut down by the Hendrix estate. So I think that was just to save face.
I got a question. I know al can’t release any of trhe older stuff cause he doesn’t have rights to them, like LORAH, but can he do a remix cd of those songs, change them enough and release it?

Why would you want to do that? If this whole remix a-thon starts spewing over into Al’s masterpieces I’m gonna throw up. LORAH is a sacred album man.
I really hope he gets the rights back to his shit someday so he can remaster them.
I know it wouldn’t happen but I think it’d be awesome to hear him re-record Twitch, with updated synths, vocals and drum machines, maybe even add guitar work to certain parts. It wouldn’t happen…just saying it’d be badass to hear things updated.
For the record, I think Al’s voice is probably so shot that he couldn’t perform most of the older material decently anymore. I know for a fact that And if he did “update” the old songs, he’d just turn them into nu-metal thrash and probably remove all of the interesting synths and samples.
Kurt Harland of Information Society did something similar to what you mention when he broke away from the rest of the band and went to (shudder) Cleopatra. He basically re-recorded all new vox to a number of his classic old INSOC songs and they were redone as remix/reworks. Of course, they paled in comparison to the originals, much like Al’s handful of “old” songs redone for Rantology.
Yeah, that trick never works.
Sometimes it can be OK - Gary Numan’s Hybrid, the Leaether Strip re-records from last year, Wumpscut recently did one that’s probably OK. Most of the time though it just sounds like ass - Cleopatra’s put out a ton of re-recorded/revamped '80s stuff, and it’s never as good.

Yeah, that was pretty weak, but I can’t really fault him as that also gave us Don’t Be Afraid. I still wish he’d put out more solo stuff. I still give that album pretty regular play.

I remember him saying something in 2003 or so about not being able to play Burning Inside because he couldn’t hit that key anymore or somesuch. If that’s the case for Burning Inside, I can’t imagine he’d have much success at 1986 or earlier, especially after another 6 years.
