I’m stealing this thread from the Avalanchers forum (so sue me) cos I think it should provoke (hopefully) some interesting responses from y’all…
So, outta curiosity, what are yr fave albums to listen to in the dead of night, between midnight and 4am - possibly when you are home all alone and it is raining outside. Albums that enhance the feeling of being all alone and vulnerable. The perfect albums for Darkness and solitude. You know the ones…
Personally, I would choose:
Lull - Continue (mostly for the track ‘Slow Fall Inward’)
Mauritzio Bianchi - Regel
SSAB Songs - s/t (weirdo, indescribale album from Harmony Korine and Brian Degraw of Gang Gang Dance)
Ennio Morricone - Excorcist II: The Heretic Original Soundtrack
John Zorn - Elegy
Sunn O))) - White 2
Nurse With Wound - Homotopie For Marie
Nico - Chelsea Girl
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol II
Liars - They were Wrong So We Drowned
Naked City - Absinthe
Lycia - The Burning Circle And Then Dust
Controlled Bleeding - Can You Smell The Rain Between
Comsat Angels - Sleep No More
The Sound - From The Lions Mouth
Marillion - Brave
Coma - Zaprzepaszczone Sily Wielkiej Armii Swietych Znakow (Polish prog band, quality)
Codeine - Frigid Stars
Amesoeurs - Ruines Humaines
Fields Of The Nephilim - Elizium
Alchemist - Austral Alien
Justin Sullivan - Navigating By The Stars
Husker Du - New Day Rising
Jesu - Jesu
Kill The Thrill - 203 Barriers
Klimt 1918 - Dopoguerra
Basically, quiet, nuanced stuff, with an underlying current of anger, violence or depression. I feel that nuance is the key word here, hours of the night are perfect for exploring it.
peligro, I think you meant Cold Summer, that has Slow Fall Inward on it. Continue is just the one long track.
lull- moments
dead voices on air- new words machine
final- solaris
techno animal- re-entry (disc 2)
It’s rare I’m up that late any more, but were I this is what I think I’d want to hear:
Coil “Time Machines”
Rapoon “Fallen Gods (Cidar)” and “What Do You Suppose? (The Alien Question)”
Popol Vuh “Aguirre Soundtrack” (mostly “Aguirre 3”)
Mother Mallard’s Instant Masterpiece Company “Like a Duck to Water” (the track “C.A.G.E.”)
Muslimgauze “Veiled Sisters”
Cliff Martinez “Solaris Soundtrack”
Tim Hecker “Mirages”
Burial “Untrue”
Boards of Canada “In a Beautiful Place out in the Country”
Brian Eno “Apollo”
“Homotopy for Mary” is a good choice too.
Back in my hard drinkin’ and druggin’ daze I used to really enjoy listening to Jim Morrison and the Doors at that time. Any other time of day I didn’t like them at all. “Kaif” off of “Dark Side” also got a lot of play that time of night back then.
Shriekback - Care/Jam Science
Torch Song - Toward The Unknown Region
The Cure - Faith/Seventeen Seconds
Trisomie 21 - Million Lights/The First Songs
Thom Brennan - Mountains/Vibrant Water
Michael Brook w/Daniel Lanois & Brian Eno - Hybrid
IXOHOXI - Aleph Null
Vangelis - Blade Runner
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden/Laughing Stock
Coil - music to play in the dark/various others
Mazzy Star - So Tonight… or Among My Swan
Psychic TV - Trip Reset
Legendary Pink Dots - Maria Dimension, others
Mimir - Mimyriad
Earth - various selections
Lynch/Badalementi soundtracks
Billy Joe Shaver - various tracks
Lucinda Williams - West
There are many others I can’t think up off the stop of my head… Often I have my ambient MP3 folder on shuffle.

Coil - Black Light District : A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room
John Carpenter - Halloween III soundtrack
Tim Hecker - Mirages
Manorexia - The Radiolarian Ooze
Gridlock - Formless
Mogwai - Ep+6
November Novelet - From Heaven On Earth
Peter Gabriel - Birdy Soundtrack
cEvin Key - The Dragon Experience
Brian Eno - Ambient 4: On Land
Jesu - Silver
Type O Negative - Oktober Rust
Snowden - Anti Anti
Ministry - DSOTS
Killing Joke - Democracy
Zero 7 - Simple Things
Meat Beat Manifesto - Original Fire
Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Swans - Love of Life
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Tweaker - 2am Wakeup Call
Good choices. ‘Time Machines’ would be great to listen to at 2am…if only I could get my hands on a copy. I do have ‘Live One’ though, which is a pretty decent alternative.
Popul Vuh is the stuff of legend. The ‘Nosferatu’ soundtrack is one of my fave soundtracks ever and definitely PERFECT for a 2am psychefest!
“Homotopy for Mary” is a good choice too.
Yeah, but with Nurse there are so many choices. I was going to say ‘Salt Marie Celeste’ or ‘Spiral Insania’ instead!!
…I’m listenng to off the Final box set. Disc 1 works well both in the day and at night. Discs 3 and 4 sound very nightime and are quite effective.
Where did you get this from and does anyone know if it’s still available?
I’ve just placed a bid for Jesu’s ‘Pale Sketches’ on ebay It’s going to cost me around AU $40, but I don’t mind. I’m in a Broderick mood at the moment (currently listening to Final ‘3’.)
Other albums I currently enjoy at night:
KTL- 2
I bought this the other day and must say I’m a little disappointed. Starts off well enough but seems like they ran out of ideas at some point. Was expecting more since I’m such a big fan of Sunn O))) and Rehberg’s ‘The Return Of Fenn’O’Berg’ etc…
well, the final box set is out of print. it was available limited edition from the avalanch store and apparently sold out in like a day or two.
if you’d like, I can upload it for you.
if you can’t get ahold of pale sketches, let me know.
Coil - ape of naples /music to play in the dark
radiohead - kid A
einsturzende neubauten - alles wieder offen
Mão Morta - Nus
Mark Lanegan - whiskey for the holy ghost
some melancholic jazz…
weird electronic music
Hmmm…lots of people mentioning Coil! That’s great - I had no idea they had much of a following. They released albums like Nurse With Wound do - they’ll be in print for a while and then disappear off the face of the earth for ever. Then you end up paying exorbadent prices for them on ebay. I’ve seen copies of ‘Time Machines’ and ‘Stolen And Contaminated’ go for over $150 on ebay!
Sometimes it sucks being a fan of underground music!! [:)]
I guess in answer to thread I’d have to go with:
Wendy Carlos - Sonic Seasonings
Coil - Black Light District
Coil - Astral Disaster
Incredible String Band - The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter
Linda Perhacs - Paralellograms
Rovo - Tonic 2001
