Controversial Opinions

Mostly agree with this. Although “A Boy Named Sue” is pretty damn good but probably more so because Shel Silverstein wrote the lyrics.

Never Liked the Clash, ever. Not even once. Didn’t accidentally hear a little bit of an unidentifiable song and think “this is ok” only to realize “this is the Clash.” If I ever misheard the Clash at first as another band, I still thought it was a shitty song by “whatever shitty band this is.”

Affirmative action is racist. Choosing someone for something based on race whether it’s a punishment or a prize is the very definition of racist. So, we’re gonna fix racism with… racism? Seems stupid.

I’m a huge Bowie fan and I disagree that he is a hack but there definitely is no defending the Dancing in the Street video…that was unbearable

Coming from the board’s head SJW talk about throwing us a curveball

90% of hip hop/rap is trash. It pains me that this garbage is hanging on like a bad cold. We’re on decade 4 now of this stuff remaining popular. Black culture has gifted us so much great music blues, funk, soul, afrobeat, house, and RnB. Hippidy hop? Not the pick of the litter.

I like how you pretend to be middle of the road.

There’s some hip hop I love, but generally compared to pretty all the other genres you mentioned it comes in last. Makes me sad that jazz has done little to evolve itself as a style in the past 40 years, one of my favorite genres and there’s lots of newer artists I love, but there’s no sense that modern jazz as a genre is about pushing boundaries at all anymore.

Johnny Cash’s cover of NIN’s “Hurt” is awful. His voice was shot and he didn’t add anything to it.

Oh, and Mr. Big Tough Man In Black is too much of a pussy to say the word “shit” in a song?

Ha ha. I think his shot voice added some charm to the song. I definitely agree the original is better, though.
I was under the impression that he was more rebellious in his younger days and was trying to be a good boy towards the end of his life.

I can’t give a fair/honest input on this topic as I’m a HUGE Cash fan and I don’t know enough about the original to care one way or another. I love the cover (yes, I heard the original first, but just wasn’t super emotionally invested in it).

I LOVE the Cash “American” albums and his covers bring a new depth and darkness to the originals that wasn’t there originally and now, given further developments and events, make his versions even more brutal and bleak. I love ALL of it.

I don’t mind Johnny Cash and the “American” recordings are OK for the most part. That being said, Hurt is an awful tune. It was awful when Reznor created it. It is still awful when Cash covers it. Every time I here the tune all I can think of is do it, end it now so we don’t need to hear about how much you think life stinks. I can’t turn it off fast enough. It’s along the lines of Stairway to Heaven awful.

I like NIN, or at least it is fair to say, I used to like NIN. Anything past The Fragile is increasingly unlistenable garbage. Yes, I know Hurt was released before The Fragile. Yes, it still blows.

I think Cash’ version of Hurt is definitely more effective with the accompanying video…

Ha Ha, we’re so opposites. I think Hurt is the only listenable song off of The Downard Spiral. The rest of the album is try hard nonsense. “Hey, Listen to this, I sang ‘Fuck you like an animal,’ with hard drums and detuned guitars and synth. That’s edgy right?”

As far as I’m concerned, with the exception of “Hurt,” everything past Pretty Hate Machine" is garbage. I think PHM is one of the most honest, sincere and emotionally vulnerable albums ever made. TDS sounds like manufactured and packaged angst. While everything after that sounds like pretentious arthouse bullshit.

The Fragile is my favorite NiN album…

Broken was great. Although I will concede that it’s just his Ministry tribute album.

I hated TDS from the moment I heard it and I realized that “Closer” was going to be a hit and would ruin all of NIN’s credibility. I have since softened on the album as a whole, but I still hate “Closer”.

PHM has great sentimental value for me, though I admit I only really like about half of the songs on it.

Likewise, The Fragile is only half good. Shouldn’t have been a double album.

That’s definitely true for me, as well.

Oh , man not for me. I don’t think there’s a dud on that album for me. I admit, that sentimental fits into the recipe for me but even still pull that out and all of those songs are still solid.

I love The Downward Spiral but I definitely agree with the ’ try hard and packaged angst’ comment. A fair chunk of that album has not aged well (Big Man With A Gun, Heresy, Hurt) That said I love Closer, March Of The Pigs, The Becoming, Eraser and the title track).

The Fragile is decent but to be honest I can’t even remember a lot of it and I have owned a copy on vinyl and cd for more than 12 years, which I admit is not a good sign.

Broken is insane and Fixed even more so.

Hesitation Marks is one of my all time favorite albums.

With Teeth and Year Zero are forgettable and not worth your attention.

I hate Pretty Hate Machine with a passion. It’s shockingly over rated.

“Ringfinger”, dude? Come on? Song is fucking terrible.

It appears I don’t share the same feelings on NiN with anyone on this board heh…

Broken is the best thing NIN has done by far.

Meeting Atticus Ross was the worst thing to happen to Reznor musically.

Closer is as awful a tune as Hurt.
