Comics

Tales From The Crypt
Creepshow
Conan The Barbarian
Lots of 40’s - 50’s Detective Comics (re-issues not the originals)

I’m big on the old style stuff.

Only new era comics I collect are Kiss and The Simpsons.

Those PLOP and MAD mags are awesome.

When I was a filthy bachelor I bought a bunch of $2 frames from Wal-Mart which fit the magazines perfectly. I would just frame ones that I thought were cool and hang 'em on the walls. Then a few months later if I got tired of 'em I’d rotate with a new set. I’ve been thinking of putting some up in my office.

If I can find my old PLOP! comics I think I’ll put some up. I also have a small handful of various Rock and Roll Comics . . . . . bio comics for THE WHO, AC/DC, Dead Kennedys.

Been a collector since high school. Pretty wide interests - old Alan Moore stuff, Claremont’s X-men stuff, Walking Dead, Bruce Jones’s 80’s output, all the old EC stuff, 50’s sci fi and horror, etc. I’m such a fanboy of good stuff that I even collect the original art.

It’s a shame that so much of the Marvel/DC stuff is so bad these days. Marvel showed such promise in the 2002/2003 timeframe, but then slowly declined. Image/Indie is where most of the good writing hides these days.

I have alot from the 70’s/early 80s…I have Ren & Stimpy & the original Star Wars

Anyone got any old Robert Crumb comics? I got a coffee table book on his work, and it’s a must [:)]

Not anymore. I used to have a few ZAP Comix, but they’ve gone with the wind. They’re really cool and he had some other artists that contributed that I’ve always really loved (Robert Williams, especially).

Supposedly a collection of all the ZAPS was supposed to be published in late 2012, so perhaps it’s out now.

The documentary on Crumb (just called “Crumb”, I believe) is pretty cool, too. Quite an interesting look at the man. Directed by David Lynch, if I recall correctly.

The late 70’s/ early 80’s era was what got me sort of into stuff as a kid. My dad had a weird lonely geek friend who literally made his living trading and collecting comics, baseball cards, etc. and he gave me a big box of Marvel comics when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Spider-Man was the main title of interest for me, but there was other cool stuff too . . . Star Wars, Kung Fu, and one called SON OF SATAN. I think my mom took those away from me for being too awesome, hahaha!!!

But seriously, how rad is that? There was a comic book back in those days that the kids could buy called SON OF SATAN. Gnarly.

Probably the most “rare” or “collectible” issue of comic I have is this one . . . . .

I’ve not checked it lately, but it is one of those things that, if it was in “mint” condition, would probably be worth like $8,000 or something.

But it’s in worn condition so I think it’s worth like $100 or something at most, hahahaha!!!

I don’t know if I still have it, but I think I know which one you’re referring to and pretty sure I did have it at the time. I was getting everything new from about 85-89

It would have been in that bunch.

just checked ebay it was 1990

I had that one!

I have an old destroyed comic of star wars, there is an angry looking green rabbit head on the the cover along with the hunter, with angry looking Han Solo, luke skywalker, and chewbaca heads. My mom got me that when I was about 4 or 5 so it suffered tremendously under care of such a child of my age at the time.

Found an image.

I was bummed when the Dodsons stopped drawing Harley Quinn and even more bummed when they cancelled her.

That book seemed doomed from the start though. they kept missing deadlines n shit. I’ve got a few pricey editions of Harley that I bought cheap off the shelf though. I have multiple copies of the Alex Ross Graphic Novel. I’ve seen that going for 80 bucks on the low end

Yep…got it:

Do those star wars comics have anything to do with star wars at all? was it a full run?

Sure did. I have up to 6. It read like the movie.

Are a lot of things miscoloured in the interior art, too?

The first 6 issues or so adapt the first movie. After that, other than an adaptation of Empire later in the run, it was all new stories. They were pretty much all awful. Lucas had some pretty big restrictions on what they couldn’t do and wouldn’t let them use a lot of the main characters. That’s how they ended up with terrible things like that rabbit. The series lasted 107 issues but is best left forgotted other than some great art by Chaykin and Al Williamson in some parts of the run.

Had the Crow graphic novel when I was a teenager, have no idea where that ended up. Johnny the Homicidal Maniac was cool. And Squee. Had the first two The Tick omnibuses back in the day too. I downloaded the first 100 issues of the Walking Dead and have been reading them on my phone, I am up to 76 so far, the first 6 or 7 issues were not great, dialogue was hokey, but it picked up pretty quickly after that, definitely an interesting read.

That’s about as far as my comics experience goes. Appreciate the art form, but not really something I could see myself dropping money on monthly to collect. I like a good graphic novel or big collection, but waiting a whole month or more for a twenty page fix of a storyline would piss me off. And I hate coming into a story in the middle.

Kinda would like to get my hands on some Howard the Duck comics sometime though. This bar here, Blueberry Hill (Chuck Berry doesn’t own it anymore but he still plays shows there every other month or so) has a room called the Duck Room where they have shows (my old band played there a few times) and the walls are covered in various duck tchotchkes, including some framed Howard comics. I loved that movie as a kid. I might have been the only one.

Oh, and a buddy of mine made me read the Evil Ernie series back in like 98 or 99. That was a pretty dopes series if I recall correctly.

Mister x …check it out.
Mad Magazine subscriber for life here.
theresa burns parkhurst is my fav of the new mad artists.

MAD, Cracked, and Zap taught me how/inspired me to draw.

Used to be into comics and manga as a kid. Kinda stopped when I really got into music. Recently picked up some newer X-men stuff and it’s pretty killer.

It’s funny, the few friends I had that read Mad magazine also shared a similarly warped sense of humour.

Sounds like you’ve got a wicked collection Gunnar. Framing the magazines is a great idea, might even try doing that myself.

Haven’t seen the Crumb doco, but I’ve been trying to find it. I’m a massive fan.

Oh yeah, and I’ve got that mad magazine with Don King on the cover!

I honestly don’t know what I still have. There’s a good chance whatever I had at my parents’ place has been eaten by termites or thrown away by my mom, but I’ll try to remember to look for it next time.

The MAD box was a totally random find. I haven’t gone through any of it, but I snapped a quick photo when I opened the box just to text to a friend. I don’t really collect stuff per se because it just takes up space and I hate dealing with it, but I’ll look through the box when I have a chance and see if there’s a few choice pieces that I want to protect.

The old 60’s and 70’s Super Specials, by the way, used to come with really cool promo stuff. My favorites were the RECORDS. MAD would have these flexidisc records with songs like “It’s A Gas” and “Great Big Beautiful Wonderful Incredible Super Spectacular Day” that were just awesome.

This was just a portion . . . .
