Comics

Anybody here collect comics? Do you have a Comic book store in your town or do you have them delivered through the mail? If so what web site do you use?

My city used to have a comic store, only one, but it closed down about 6-7 years ago. So I haven’t collected comics in quite some time. But now, as I’m nearing the end of the walking dead compendium one, I’ve ordered compendium #2, as well as spent 35 bucks on issues 97-102. I still need to get issues 103 - 107 but don’t want to spent another 30 dollars on that story arc, although it’s probably gonna happen, so before I have to shell out even another 30 dollars on yet another story arc, I’d like to start getting the comics as they’re released since I’m likely to be caught up by the end of the month.

So, yeah, anybody use a website to have comics delivered to their house?

i don’t collect but read alot of DC and some marvel in the past.Have you ever read absolution?

I love comics and collect them as much as I can. I haven’t been to a comicbook store in years myself either but I’ve been meaning to checkout a few I haven’t been to in my town. My regular one nearby closed down too a few years ago.

Anyways I love really old comics from the 50’s through the 80’s. All kinds . Lately I love old horror comics by EC. This Vault of Horror I got recently…

[angelic]

I haven’t bought any in awhile though. I like buying comics on eBay sometimes. I’ve seen some good deals on there.

I recently discovered a large crate of vintage Mad Magazines (60’s, 70’s, and 80’s) that I’d thought I’d lost many years ago.

I haven’t followed or bought any comics for more than 20 years, but I used to get into certain titles moreso because I liked the style of certain artists. One especially that I really liked because the covers were absolutely brilliant was PLOP! Magazine. It had these really intense detailed covers drawn by Basil Wolverton and the margins/ framing was all by Sergio Aragones.

Examples . . .

I went through a very brief comic phase when the Marvel Vs DC series came out. I liked it as a kid, but I also didn’t know anything about comic books. Marvel Vs DC is considered by many to be a disappointment. My comic book friend thinks it’s an outrage that The Sub-Mariner got beat by Aquaman. I’m sure Green Lantern fans were just as pissed since Silver Surfer took him out in one hit. Robin Vs Jubilee (X-Men) was a joke since there’s ended in a draw after they fell in love. Thor Vs Captain Marvel had a nonsensical ending with Thor winning by turning Marvel into a little boy. The only really good fight was Wolverine Vs Lobo since they were evenly matched. Most of the others were obvious.

During that period, I was into the Scarlet Spider. It’s Peter Parker’s clone Ben Riley in a red suit with a blue cutoff with the Spider-Man logo on it. Fell out of that one real quick since he got his ass handed to him in every issue I read.

My comic book friend thinks it’s an outrage that The Sub-Mariner got beat by Aquaman.

I don’t know anything about Sub-Mariner, but ANYONE would be outraged if their hero got beat by Aquaman. Aquaman is the gayest Superhero ever.

With the exception of a quick fascination with Spiderman when I was a wee tyke, I never really cared for any superhero comics.

The closest I ever got was Mr. Monster. He was a cocksure sarcastic dick who fought monsters. Kind of a pre-Ash prototype type of guy. The artwork, of course, was pure class.

If anybody remembers that old MTV show “The State” they had a sketch where they rip on Aquaman. Fucking hilarious!

I couldn’t find the video of it but here’s the basics of it.

In MTV’s sketch comedy show The State, Aquaman is belittled by the other members of the Super Friends for his comparably uninteresting powers. Superman assigns all of the other members difficult tasks, and then flippantly tells Aquaman to “go…talk to some fish.”

And then they all laugh at him.

BTW, Gunnar, if you have the Mad Magazine that has Mike Tyson and Don King on the cover (It’s a blue cover), I got a letter published in that issue!!

You may all revel in my awesomeness!

I don’t know if I still have it, but I think I know which one you’re referring to and pretty sure I did have it at the time. I was getting everything new from about 85-89 and a massive load of back issues from the 60’s - 80’s.

I stopped following regularly when Don Martin left for Cracked (ouch!). More recently (perhaps 15 years back?) they went to glossy color pages and that was the final death of the magazine for me.

Nice.

I hope I still have it in my collection, because it was the only one that I REALLY cared about, but this one is really incredible.

So bold. There’s no way they’d try something like that nowadays.

WOW!
No alfred e numan on that cover.

Not at all. Just a big badass middle finger.

Could be Alfred’s hand.

I have a lot of comics, but mostly I just buy stuff in trades. I still get The Goon and Stuff Of Legend every month.

Grmpy, I thought you lived in L.A.? There are several shops in that area, or there used to be.

No I live about 60 miles north of L.A. I can’t be making monthly runs to L.A. for comics.

HAHA!!! That tagline was way too familiar so I looked into it. I’ve seen it before, but it was Daredevil (the time frame is about right, though – 1975). I had a friend that was into Daredevil and had this issue.

Anyway, yeah, way stupid.

I used to also read a few comics that were intentionally ridiculous and stupid. Primarily . . .

Capt. Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew

And . . .

Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham

Those PLOP and MAD mags are awesome.

I’ve got a shitload of MAD mags from the 80s and 90s.

Some assorted Spiderman, Superman and Phantom comix, but they’re in a state of disarray and disrepair.

Anyone got any old Robert Crumb comics? I got a coffee table book on his work, and it’s a must [:)]

Man. i would really suggest finding info on absolution it kinda had that satirical watchmen take on superheroes and it’s really dark and realistic,as far as choices they’d make in certain situation’s
