coin-op arcade games

For some reason these seem to be big with the industrial crowd. I think Reznor owns a bunch. Altho I’m not a big fan of games ( find most to be virulent + mindless ) anymore I love old arcade games from 1979-1984.

As a teenager I had a sacred weekly habit: The great friday afternoon bike ride to Adams drugstore, a favorite journey journey from home to rack of comics, rows of candy, a pop machine and behold Wizard of Wor - Even tho the graphics from Midway are crude by today’s cinematic standards it’s trance inducing minalmalist maze and voice synthesizer threats were powerful and ummistakbale. I would kill pockets of quarters on this game. A past experience still savored today.

Other faves:

Centipede
Berzerk
Clowns
Fire Truck
Battlezone
Defender - Eugene Jarvis = genius
Space Invaders - the invaders with moonlit eyes and pikes on the side of the cabinet still freak me out…THUMP.THUMPTHUMP…they are coming…
Space Invaders Deluxe
Asteroids
Missile Command
Breakout
Joust - 2nd fave game
Robotron
Zaxxon
Tron
Dragons Lair
Qix

TRON for sure!!! Quix. and with out a doubt DRAGONS LAIR! I liked how it was a cartoon you played. In the early 90’s people were buying that machine at auctions for 150 bucks and yankng the laser disc player out to use in their home theatere set up back when LASER DISC was huge. I would by a TRON cabinet if I could find one.
My senior year of High school I got into tornado fooseball so I’ve owned a coin Op Tornado for about 8 years now. Unfortunately my friends all moved away and and I have nobody to play with anymore :frowning: cause every one I know now just spins the damn rods! NO FUN.

My parents own an ABRA CA DABRA Pinball machine from the 70’s they used to have a pinball machine called HIGH HAND as well but that game broke so they donated it to the local arcacde so on the condition that the tech could fix it. He couldn’t so I beleive it went to the dump

Wizard of Wor was fun, great game, i played it on Colleco or Intellivision tho, don’t remember an arcade of it.

Tempest was good - Joust was my favorite tho. Later followed by hours of plunking quarters during my high school job into Street Fighter I/II/Turbo and the first Mortal Kombat (they all suck after that, i don’t care what you think ;P)

i don’t know if it’s an ‘industrial crowd’ thing, more so than an ‘age’ group. Friend of mine has 2 stand-up games and he doesn’t listen to anything remotely industrial, he’s a classic rock guy.

Yup. Tron is badass. They did a sequel in the arcade called Discs of Tron ( 1983 ) very very very rare. Full body upright cabinet game that you stand inside of…Tron vs. Sark. I believe.

I played a version of that when i was in 6th grade or so called the DEADLY DISC OF TRON only it was a sit down not a standup. SInce i didn’t really know how to play it my $.50 went quickly nad I didn’t go for another turn

Did you ever play Space Ace? I only played that on computer and I could never get past the opening scene I didn’t know what to do there were no flashes like in Dragons Lair. I didn’t know when or where to move no directions worked

I was a fan of the Kong series up until about #3 and definately lost interest when Nintendo started putting out all of those ridiculous Kong titles to cash in on the name.

I have all the retro collections for the PS2… Midway Arcade Classcs 1, 2, 3, Taito 1, 2, Capcom, 1, 2.
Great to play with some friends after pounding back a few beers.

I have a pretty nice MAME setup too, and I was actually thiniking about getthing this for my recently renovated basement:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11231741&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US&s=1

It has my two all time favs on there:

Bubble Bobble and Black Tiger.

Wonderful stuff.

[reply]Yeah, big Space Ace fan. Dexter, Kimmy, and Borf…“YOU CANNOT WIN!!!” [/quote]

Really? Is their no ending to the game? Like I said I couldn’t get past the opening scene cause any direction I would move wouldn’t work those big asteoids (or was it the blaster ray?) would always kill me. I gave up with it.

More clever than Lair. Dragon’s Lair 2 is pretty rad too.

I like DLII Time machine much better than the original Lair. There is a DL III But it’s only for PC and I haven’t bought it yet. I don’t know if it’s in the tradition of the Original or if it’s an action character like the SNES version was.

Bluth knows how to draw fuckable women.

Here here. Daphne YUMMY!

One Game I wish they would release on the arcade collections is a game called FRONTLINE. Colecovision had a pretty sweet rendetion of it. All of coleco’s games were pretty close to the Arcades!! I don’t know how ATARI survived and not coleco when Coleco certainly had a superior product. Probably had to do with Price I dont’ know prices as I was too young at the time but my parents were very frugle and we ended up with the atari 2600. Man, In first or second grade I wanted the Colecovision sooo BAD for no other reason than the FRONTLINE game but no we had SUCK ASS ATARI.
Anway I have since played FRONTLINE On the ADAMEM and the MAME EMULATORS but the playability is kinda crappy with having to use the keyboard and all. I also wish they would release TRON in a Vintage Game pack for one of the newer systems as well.

One of these days, I plan to buy an Attack From Mars pinball machine. Love that freaking game, excellent action, and the alien/human dialogue is beyond hilarious (“Look out! They got a BIG-O-BEAM!”). Came out in '95, and everyone’s asking about $4K for their used one.

I was in grade school during the video game boom of the early 80’s, so I was knee deep in arcade tokens, Atari, and C64. I was always ‘good’ at most arcade games, but never a master of any particular one. No matter how hard I tried, I always SUCKED at Donkey Kong, and it frustrated the shit out of me. I just watched King of Kong a couple months back, and it was crazy seeing someone reach the kill screen in DK and Pac-Man.

Favortie classic arcades:

Gyruss
Qix
Asteroids
Discs of Tron
Joust
Ms. Pac-Man
Gradius
Super Mario Bros.

2600:

Pitfall 1 & 2
River Raid
Cosmic Ark
Kaboom
Megomania
Real Sports Volleyball
Activision Tennis
erm…all the Atari/Activision titles, really

C64:

JUMPMAN (still love that game)

Global Thermonuclear War

Ahem, feeling kinda nerdy.

LOL, nice

Deadly Discs of Tron was awesome. No light bikes but still -

you had a controller knob to move an X target around 3 sides of the walls to fire you disc, it would return after hitting the wall (behind your opponent). You and computer both controlled avatars and fought from floating discs that would have missing rings and such as you levelled up. You could ‘block’ as well a finite number of times. Later they added like half walls to make the shots harder - Goal is to knock your opponent down to death.

It wasn’t a true stand-up or sit-down. the original cabinet kinda had a ‘seat’ but it was still a stand-up style machine, you could lean back and sit tho. It was inclosed to keep the glare down.

Great machine. Loved that too- I would buy one of those.

I lived in arcades from about age 7 to 10. Loved Tron, Qbert, Tempest, Berzerk, Joust, Zaxxon etc. Adore Dragon’s Lair 1 + 2 and Space Ace. Bluth was at his peak during those days (Secret of Nimh is an excellent film as well). The settings in Dragon’s Lair 2 were especially clever and the pace of the game was insane. I probably poured hundreds of dollars in those games. The video game scene is a bit bleak these days, though I do enjoy the button pushing rampage of the Metal Slug series. Still it seems creativity has been replaced by the ugly beast known as first person shooters.

Hey Jizzwad, good to hear somebody else loves the Black Hole! That is probably my favorite Disney film. Really bleak atmosphere, great visuals and robot designs, moody John Barry score (my vinyl copy is warped from frequent listens) and Maximilian Schell looking like the devil. That film totally shaped my very strange childhood. Tron is awesome as well, love the Syd Mead and Moebius design work on that one. Some of Wendy Carlos best work as well. David Warner who plays Sark is also pretty fantastic

I don’t remember too much of the black hole as again I was quite young. BUT I wore out the pirated copy of Tron we had! OH MAN that movie was geat How could you not adore Flynn? ownd his own arcade smarter than the Boss of his old company, Killer graphics fro the time. Wonderful Movie…ENd of Line

BTW what’s a Kill Screen? what happens does the machine just tilt or what?
Late,
grmpysmrf

Kill screen - basically the game runs out of code and crashes. Pac-Man crashes after 255 stages. Here’s a pic on the Wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_screen

…and how could forget to mention the almighty Galaga as one of my arcade favorites?! Nothing worse than letting a ship get captured, only to lose the rest of my lives. Agony of defeat.

Galaga rules the school. Favorite video game.

For new games I love Wii Sports. I know, I’m a dork - but the Tennis is so damn fun!

HELL YEAH Wii sports is sweeeeet! Although the drawback to Wii is it sucks if you want to be sloth like. Hence the purchasing of the 360 as well! I’ve been a Halo 3 junkie for like the first 2 months it came out but I have since switched to Legend of Zelda on the Wii. Man that game is great!!! I can’t put it down!

BTW Tenohtwo thanks for the kill screen Info I never new about that. I always just throught the games went on forever. does anyone know where the Kill Screen is for Gauntlet? I’ve been to level 230 before I got sick of it and turned it off.

“Wizard needs food badly!”

oh man, i just totally remembered ‘Rampart’ as well. Great game. Tetris + guns = good.

-E

Big fan of Tron, too. Getting weepy, even though I wasn’t even born when these came out.

Anyone mention Sinistar yet? Big fan of that too…“BEWARE, I LIVE”

“Wizard needs food badly!”

“Red Warrior is about to die!”

Defender was shithot.

My other favs were…

Q-Bert
Frogger
Ghosts And Goblins
Karate Champs (the one with just two joy-sticks)
Kung Fu Master

Those were the good ol days.

Big Sinistar ( Willimas 1983 ) fan.

“BEWARE COWARD”

my fave:

“I LIVE”

Game used to scare the bejeezus outta me.

Popular at cinemas and movie theaters for some reason.

Shit yeah, Sinistar! We used to have the at the Shopko in Eau Claire (Wisconsin town I grew up in). I’d bug the piss out of my parents for quarters to play through a few rounds against the big head.

The head in Sinistar reminded me of the villian in She-Ra too. Anyone else notice that?
