Also, a friend of mine strongly urged and advised to avoid any material from the 80s. I’ll probably start looking more into their material, since from what I heard sounded pretty good.
And semi-zepp-releated. I heard the Plant/Krauss album. It’s good. Someone of it not quite my thing, but it’s a cool listen.
Lately though i’m trying to get into music that I know I like, but never really invested the time in (Beck and Flaming Lips), and it’s worth it. How come I haven’t done all of this sooner? Meh!
tommy by the who
although i’m certainly interested in hearing it
fleetwood mack, janis joplin, Crosby stills nash, arethra franklin
then there are the “Classics” that i could give 2 shits about like any dylan cd or sublime
there is no Zep material from the 80s. other than the post-Bonham death release of Coda, which is basically the outtakes release. Even that’s not bad.

Zeppelin material from the 80’s?!?!?!?
If someone told you to avoid ‘any Zeppelin material from the 80’s’ they obviously have no freakin’ clue about music whatsoever and hence their advice should be considered null and void - unless of course you grew up in a bubble on a ranch in the middle of the Serengeti in which case you could probably be forgiven for not knowing anything about Zeppelin.
The only Zeppelin albums I haven’t heard are:
Led Zeppelin
In Through The Out Door
The Song Remains The Same
I will get around to them sooner or later.
Haha. Think he was only trying to point out that it was the later material to stay away from. He specifically said it was an album or two. One being very poppy and annoying, he said. He might have said Coda to be honest.
saw beck his first tour. awesomely loud, and physically stupid onstage. tremendous effort .can’t listen to the current…
have to agree with lord piko about the plant/krauss collaboration. it’s really good. fluid, easy on my jaded ears, but still has something soulful about it.
as far as janet joplin records go, i guess pearl was played on vinyl over and over in my house growing up. and her version of ball and chain is as painful to hear as james brown doing " man’s world".
janis joplin sang her ass off,for a brief time. worth the cash to pick up anything, i think.
Mostly punk stuff like The Ramones, my brother is a punker I could ask to borrow a bunch of his punk rock cds.
And anything by Pantera
The only Ramones album to continually appear on rock journos ‘Top 100’ lists would be the first one. Personally I wouldn’t bother with anything Ramones post 1980.
From Peligro’s list, Television’s ‘Marquee Moon’ and the Heads’ ‘Remain In Light’ albums are highly recommended listens. The guitars on Marquee Moon are ahead of their time (you can hear the influence on early REM and some post-punk), and Remain In Light is almost like post-punk-world-beat, with great hooks. “Born Under Punches”, “Crosseyed and Painless”, “House In Motion” are phenomenal tunes, the classic “Once In A Lifetime” is on there, and the fucking thing was produced by Brian Eno. Just buy it, mon.
1002
btw, have seen sonic youth in various dives. and could i name a record. no.
have to agree with whoever posted the assessments of television.the band. not the console in front of my stupid face.
sigh.
yes. ed maintains a serious sense of humour.
Remain in Light is an amazing album, and probably the best they put out. Little Creatures is a very good album also though. The eno albums are pretty top class, but even the ones without are still pretty good. I mean come on…“Psycho Killer”…
elvis costello and aerosmith are another 2 i haven’t bothered to really go out and persue music by. clash too… never gave them a good listen

Always been a little curious about costello and clash. Find aerosmith kinda annoying though. I really wouldn’t mind trying the stones. I’ve heard bad, but i’ve heard some good also, so maybe they’re worth a shot.
Find Aerosmith kinda annoying though.
Pre '93 Aerosmith (before the Get A Grip album) is not bad. I like “Permenent vacation” (Got decent songs that charted like “Ragdoll” “Dude looks like a lady” “Angel” and some non singles like Hangman Jury (One of my faves on the album) I think it’s better than “Pump.” Any stuff from the 70’s is a hodge podge so take your pick of albums from that era… but seriously I share your opinion on Aerosmith from the “get a grip” album forward.

All Led Zeppelin is classic. They more or less invented the term. If you only have IV then you ABSOLUTELY should run out now and buy III and Houses Of The Holy.
I know you are an Aerosmith fan - I mentioned not having heard Toys In The Attic before…is this one a decent one to start with? It always seems to appear in ‘Greatest 100’ lists. I always thought they were a poor man’s Rolling Stones but might reconsider…

Sacreligious.

Television are OK but not as visionary or as worthy as many have cited them as.

and strangely isn’t permanent vacation the album they started using songwriters on?

Not to my knowledge.
Edit: no shit! from wikipedia It is their first album to employ professional songwriters, instead of featuring material solely composed by members of the band
Not bad, Sir!

Does Houses and III have any songs that are well known? is Kashmir on one of those??
I’d start with their greatest hits. Only .88 cents!! here http://www.amazon.com/Aerosmith-Greatest-Hits/dp/B00000DRXR/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1241682982&sr=8-4 and then jump to permanent vacation then pump, then your kinda on your own for the 70’s era cause i like some odd songs from that period that one wouldn’t expect me to like, considering my tastes. Generally, you can use the greatest hits CD to kinda guide you to specific albums from the time. Meaning if you really like dream on you might wanna check out their debut S/T album
Yeah, I guess i could see Aerosmith as a poor man’s rolling stones although i would call Aeromsith Poppier (For lack of a better word) than the stones and from what I’ve gathered the stones really stayed pretty true to their style where as Aerosmith not-so-much!
My two cents.
