'Classic' Albums You Haven't Heard Yet

I’m talkin’ albums that time and time again make rock journalists ‘Top 100’ lists and are generally condsidered genre defining. Albums that most …ahem…serious music fans are supposed to drool over - and you are still yet to hear them (for whatever reason).

I guess my list of ‘Yet To Hear It’ would be:

Beatles - Revolver
Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde
The Clash - London Calling
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Radiohead - The Bends
Television - Marquee Moon
The Pixies - Surfer Rosa
Love - Forever Changes
Talking Heads - Remain In Light
The Replacements - Let It Be

‘London Calling’ and ‘The Bends’ are excellent.

I do not possess any Bob Dylan albums; I am familiar with his stuff, I just have no interest in him.

Off the top of me head I can’t think of any classic albums that I haven’t heard that I would be bothered with anyway. Will post if I can think of some.

never played a Stones record. Of course I know most of the Stones songs (have Greatest hits), haven’t listened to a complete release.

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds. Never got around to it.

otoh, i’ve heard everying thing the first post.

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Talking Heads - Remain In Light

They’re the pick of the bunch.

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds. Never got around to it.

It is a classic.

So is this…

"Following in the footsteps of Dangermouse, London producer Bullion has taken his sample inspiration from two very different sources for this free remix album Pet Sounds: In the Key of Dee. Now I am the first to admit that I was never really feelin’ anything other than the idea of mixing two really disparate artists into a cohesive project. Dangermouse had a great “idea” but the actual music was largely uninteresting and unlistenable after the initial surprise. Many other so-called producers have attempted similar concoctions to varying degrees of success. Mostly the mixes are tepid at best. My favorite has been the JJ Brown mixes of Ludacris & The Jackson 5 and his upcoming Hall & Oates X Gym Class heroes mash-up.

Now along comes Bullion and he really delivers a stellar project for this (can I call it a burgeoning) genre. Using samples from the great 1966 Beach Boys album, Pet Sounds and J Dilla’s repetoire, Bullion has created something wholly unique and refreshing. It’s not a mashup album as he is at pains to point out, but it does mix samples from these two artists to great effect. The ultimate kudos must go to Bullion however, who spliced and diced these samples with his own superb production."

Me neither.
Also, anything by The Band.

I’ve never knowingly listened to an entire Hendrix album all the way through. I’m not really a big fan mostly because he was a pretty weak singer/songwriter in my humble opinion.

Post-Peter Green Fleeetwood Mac, solo Eric Clapton, the Eagles, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Guns & Roses…I’ve never listened to any of that stuff either.

me either - but there are pretentious sound & audiophile guys that are all about this. i never understood it and never thought much about it.

In terms of ‘classic’ albums I haven’t heard:

Guns ‘n’ Roses - Appetite For Destruction
Queen - A Night At The Opera
Bob Marley - Exodus
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Radiohead - The Bends
Madonna - Like A Prayer

Probably lots more that I’ll think of later…

Oh, I’ve never heard a post Beatles ‘solo’ album, but I’m not sure if any of those ever make Top 100 lists.

All of the above.

Yeah, I’m gettin’ some support for Radiohead’s ‘The Bends’. Not something I’m falling over myself to check out. I find an overwhelming majority of their material to be so damn safe, so pedestrian and so smug - I can see why it’s popular with the college radio crowd.

Essentially I see them as Coldplay with experimental flourishes.

Also have never heard Beck’s Odelay or that darn mega popular FatBoy Slim album that every two-bit ‘hipster’ MTV journo spent the latter end of the 1990’s convincing everyone was the greatest thing since curly fries.

Equating Radiohead with Coldplay would be committing a serious musical injustice. While ‘The Bends’ is more accessible and liked by many, their later stuff takes a while to appreciate. When ‘Kid A’ and ‘Amnesiac’ came out, loads of people were moaning “what the fuck is this?” but now they all love it. Radiohead are an excellent band and are worth the hype in my opinion.

Unlike Beck. What the fuck is so great about that twerp? And he’s a scientologist. Pass.

Yes. And No.

Not a hell of a lot apparently.

Had a look at Rolling Stone and Spin magazines list of 100 Greatest. These are some of the albums from those lists (the albums I could actually care less about) that I have yet to hear…

Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Paul Simon Graceland
Portishead - Dummy
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Marvin Gaye - What’s Goin On
Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic
MC5 - Kick Out The Jams

Obviously, to each their own, but i never ‘got’ Coldplay. It’s like ez listening for the 40’s set. But, Radiohead jumped leaps and bounds from the Bends - which is good - and O.K. Computer, which is one of my top 5 faves of all time. Mind blowing!

Never understood Beck either.

Oh well…[;)]

If it makes any difference to you, the Bends was produced by John Leckie who, in my opinion, can do no wrong. He produced the song “Public Image” for PIL as well as “Real Life” by Magazine. Give it a spin. “Dark Star” and “Just” are great songs.

never listened to miles davis. intentionally. can’t hang with that.
still like the music, when i hear it.
all of the above, i’ve heard, and most i don’t like. beach boys i appreciate endlessly, however. even if i can’t stomach them for about 25 years or so.
i must say (even tho this is not quite classic enough) i’ve never listened to ok computer.

Yeah, maybe I’ll check out The Bends one day. I’ll add it to my list…

<adds The Bends to Must Hear List>

OK. So, it’s slotted in…at no. 477 - which means I’ll get around to it sometime either before OJ is released from prison or sometime after Obama is outed as the big girly fraud that he really is.

Hmmmm…Revolver by The Beatles is probably No. 1 on my classic albums list to check out - mostly for Tommorow Never Knows if anything. I’m heading up to the shops later, maybe I’ll snag a copy then if there’s any going cheap. Might also snag me a copy of Pod by The Breeders which I am also yet to hear…

Any of the Zeppelin albums…in their entirities. Only own and have heard their hits album… Sad, I know…
