Broadrick reviews Ministry in Terrorizer.........

The Jesuit himself is featured in the long running column where 2 band mates sit down and the intvwr plays clips from songs and the band has to guess who they are. Well. they played Scarecrow for Justin and he got it wrong! Oopsies! he then went on to say that Ministry sound more “tish, tish, tish” where as Godlflesh where more - I dunno he made some kinda furnace like noise like’ mwrownsh’ or something. Wasn’t into the new sound of Al’s.

Speaking of Al bashing Bill Rieflin has a 5-6 page intvw in modern drummer this month. They asked him about why he split Ministry and he said things were getting to chemically recreational or something to that effect and that Al balked at the cost of his services for Filth Pig. Oh yeah and Bill hates metal too. Shocker.

What i don’t get is if everybody else sees Ministry as metal - why does al vehemently deny the tag everytime somebody asks him are you metal? Just accept it dude and deal.

Last I checked, Al denied the “Industrial” tag more than anything.

wee willy reefer is making mad loot with those nerds from REM, can’t blame him. he is one talented fellow.

Interesting…
Wasn’t Godflesh going to open up for Ministry at one time?

I’m always interested to see if our favorite artists actually listen to one anothers’ work. I think it’s funny that Broadrick apparently isn’t too familiar with Psalm 69, THE trademark of the ‘industrial metal’ genre that Broadrick himself was so much a part of.

I also read that Trent Reznor still hasn’t “had a chance” to listen to the new Perfect Circle…specifically the song “Passive” that was from the failed Tapeworm sessions.

I mean, do these guys really not listen to eachothers’ shit?!?

Oh and you said Broadrick got it wrong with regards to Scarecrow…so what was his guess as to which band it was???

Oh…and I think they did fine on Filth Pig without Rieflin. Let those cocksuckers REM have him for all I care…their music sucks and he is cheating himself as an artist if he thinks he is doing anything groundbreaking or important while in THAT camp.

While I must agree that Reiflin isn’t doing anything groundbreaking or of importance with REM, I do have to uphold them. They are a good band for what they do. They’ve pushed TRUE alternative and college radio music much farther than most bands do (with the exception of Sonic Youth and such ilk)…

And yeah. Godflesh DID open for Ministry at some point if I’m not mistaken. It’s kind of weird that they wouldn’t recognize Ministry’s stuff, cuz if I’m not mistaken they toured with them during the Psalm tour. Heh. Go figure.

And I would like to know what he guessed it was… Would be interesting to know. As for the whole Trent/APC thing, who cares? Tapeworm is one of those long overdue/forgotten and not even important sider projects that we all gave up on long before the artists did.

Peace!

they did. Brixton Academy. you weren’t there.

Hmmm, you think it’s funny

Doesn’t surprise me one bit that Broaderick never cared for ‘industrial metal’ and most likely hated the term. Wasn’t he into Swans, Whitehouse etc…? From memory, I believe he was never a Ministry fan at all. Ever. Just a friend of the band. It was more a case of Ministry liking Godflesh. I think it’s hilarious Broaderick never returned the favour.

Oh and you said Broadrick got it wrong with regards to Scarecrow…so what was his guess as to which band it was???

Probably Megadeth. Not that you could blame the poor guy.

Yeah, I don’t know how he lives with himself - seeing as all this time he could have been drumming on such groundbreaking ‘classics’ as Houses Of The Mole etc…

Anyway, REM aren’t THAT camp. Not as camp as, say, Morrissey or something.

Justin originally thought Scarecrow was something offa Pailhead.

Yikes.

Godflesh opened for Ministry in summer 96 during the Sphinctour for some dates in Europe.

And in Terrorizer, about Scarecrow Justin said that it sounded “dated”, what surprised me a bit…

Pailhead? Well… at least he was reasonably close. But dated? Who the hell is JKB to talk about dated? I mean, don’t get me wrong. JKFlesh is my second biggest idol/hero in music but he has NO room to talk about sounding dated.

Peace!

I agree. A lot of Godflesh stuff sounded almost instantly dated and has aged the worst out of a lot of my fav. bands.

Hell, most of the Godlfesh material sounds about as primitive and outdated as Big Black’s stuff…A simple drum machine beat and some angry guitars with evil vocals…

(That’s not to say I don’t worship both bands btw)

Is that not on purpose? That’s Godflesh trademark, no?

On the other hand, during the blind test Justin recognised immediately a Wolf Eyes song (from the ‘Burned Mind’ album if I remember)…

And in Terrorizer, about Scarecrow Justin said that it sounded “dated”, what surprised me a bit…

Godflesh pretty much created their own niche, but it gets very old after a while. People complain about HOTM being a retreat, Broaderick hasn’t deviated very far from the original formula in the past 17 years.

At least Jus digs Hevy Devy from SYL…

in the latest metal hammer, there’s an interview/review thingy of jesu’s album. justin goes on about how when he first met al (in about 91 i think at that gig), and al was wearing a godflesh tshirt and justin was well chuffed [:P]

and incidentally, there was a funny story in the last issue where mortiis was at the NAMM show, and al puked all over him after drinking too much red wine

man, i thought i had quite a few failed relationships, but poor justin man…all his lyrics are about dysfunctional relationships…heh

Wasn’t mentionned yet, in Terrorizer they reviewed the Jesu album and it got 9/10 as rating.

If Justin didn’t recognize Ministry at first during the blind test, he still recognized immediatly Killing Joke, Suicide, Laibach, Zeni Geva and Wolf Eyes, as I said before…

Which Killing Joke track was it? What did he say about them - did he mention that they too sound dated??

Failed relationships!?! One of his girlfriends committed suicide apparently - or so the story goes. And his father once threatened to kill his whole family as well, so he was then raised by his grandmother who was a witch. Poor guy.

Still, could have been worse. Could’ve been raised by a democrat - yikes!

Justin was always fan of Killing Joke. His pre-Godflesh band was called based on a KJ song, Fall Of Because.

Godflesh used to play live the KJ song ‘Requiem’. And during their last UK tour, in London, Jaz Coleman came on stage to sing on that song…

So, I guess he wouldn’t have something negative to say concerning KJ.

What is it saying then? You seem to be saying BB suffers for it’s lo fi 80s production

But isn’t that the whole point of big black? Super sweaty analogue tinnyness. It never sounded bang up to date & actively tried not to

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

It’s lo fi, easy to confuse 80s lo fi for sounding outdated. Godflesh is basically guitar and a drum machine, that’s not really a formula for sounding outdated.

For example Streetcleaner and LORAH came out around the same time, but LORAH has more electronics that make it sound dated.
