It may sound rather granola of me, but Sarah McLachlan does things with her voice that makes my heart go into knots. I listen to a lot of female singers but none transport me quite the way she does.
Sade is great. I would add Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) to the list and second PJ Harvey.

The music is always going to be crap with these singers. It’s a different world, but that doesn’t take from the vocal talent they have. Feck all of the Beyonce’s retain interest past their 30s. Let them have their fun. If all female singers dressed in suits and sported moustaches the world would be a cold dark place.
