I for got why people hate him?
Examples please…just finished reading the Connelly book and didn’t really feel resentment from Chris towards him???
Martin to me just seems like Industrial music’s legendary sly used car salesman[cool]

apparently he is bad at the business side of things… ripped some people off.
mick harris also calls him a failed drummer.
For the same reasons people hate used car salesmen.
Michael Gira has said Invisible was a very bad match for his band, Swans. Why that is, I don’t have the source to look for.
Chris Connelly has had resentment towards Martin in the past, only to re-sign with his label a few years ago and (based on recent comments on some live recordings released to iTunes) seems to possibly regret that decision. But that’s gossip. Care to clear the air, Chris?
Ministry, or specifically Al, has stated those tribute albums mentioned in another thread were not authorized in any way, and has not received payment.
Genesis P-Orridge has said similar about some late 90’s Psychic TV releases on Invisible, and has advised many not to buy them.
There is another member who posts on Litany (litany.prongs.org) whom used to be a member of Voodou, who says he has not received royalties on his releases, or even the countless unauthorized remixes and demos on their debut.
Meg Lee Chin was basically homeless after recording her first record, due to cash up front to record only in Martin’s studio, or else her record wouldn’t get made. It is due to Martin that there has been such a long time for a follow-up from her.
There was even hot water with Killing Joke, whom Martin was a member of and is not even on his label, due to the fact that Martin simply released a three-disc/DVD set of KJ bootlegs of various performance with/without him in the band on his website, only to confront one of the members at a party who was angry and he apologized, and took it down. However, he’s not mentioned how many were sold, and even if he did if that money went to KJ.
I’m sure the reasons vary depending on who you ask, but the majority of complaints stem from payment. Royalties, etc. I know of others, that I am actually personal friends with (that I even knew prior to knowing of Atkins’ shenanigans) that were screwed almost as worse.
Personally, I like the guy musically, but personally he can eat a dick. He runs the gamut in that category to me, along with Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, Jackson Pollack, etc.

Wow.
There seems to be many people who sort of walked over the Invisible cliff after warnings from many others??
I saw posters here in Edinburgh recently for “work shops” and “talks” Martin Atkins was donig about how to get ahead in the music industry i suppose???[cool]
martin had a habit of inviting all of his “friends” party-style to contribute to stuff on the label, then when it came time to pay anybody royalties he’d send out these apologies saying, well the label has expenses, blah blah. my understanding( anyone else who cares can look into it) is that so called mechanical royalties(pennies for each record sold) always get paid. you don’t get to deduct your labels business expenses before paying everybody their royalties. kinda sounds like oldschool early 20th century don’t pay them nigras nothin’.lots of blues, jazz and soul artists were enslaved that way.
i thought it was pretty hilarious when several years ago martin was auctioning his expertise on the recording industry on ebay. zero takers. his ex-wife, an old friend, was speechless to say the least.
I remember reading he dicked over ohgr on the Ritalin cd… and he recently released a dub album of the cd and in a recent skinnpy puppy interview ohgr didn’t even know it was made/out/ or any good and had no input
What I think is this, and this is just what I think-
martin has band record album, studio bill is, say, $1000 for example
he will bill band $1000 against records sold, but then nickel and dime the studio to, say $200
same with mastering, artwork etc, or promo, he might hire a promo company to work, say, the damage manual record, the bill from the company is a few thousand, he will charge this back to the band, but simply -for example-“not pay” the promo company
I think it’s called “dual accounting” and I believe it’s against the law
but that’s just a guess…obviously, I am not the mogul that atkins is
thanks, no I’m still friends with most
martin i guess has been fancying himself as the true rock n roll swindler for a long time.
may he one day RITP–rest in tiny pieces.
has anybody read martin’s book on making it in the music business?

That KILLS me, man.

For the above reason, I’ll agree with you 100%.
has anybody read martin’s book on making it in the music business?
I suspect there’s a whole chapter in there that implies for one to make it in the music business one needs to give Martin a whole lot of money.
A band I used to be in was approached by Martin. Let’s just say the terms weren’t that appealing.
For awhile there a copy of the contract you had to sign to appear on an Invisible compilation was floating around somewhere. It was crazy nutso. Pay Martin a bunch of money, sell a bunch of the comps on your own, etc.
Meanwhile, I’ve been on two compilations for an outfit called BLC and my only obligation was to not release the songs myself for two years (or something like that).
Yeah, in order to get Underground Inc (they weren’t calling it Invisible those days) you had to give up rights to your back catalog on top of a lot of other hoo hah. I wasn’t personally involved with the band at that time so it’s not my place to say too much, but from what I heard it didn’t sound like a sweet deal at all.
the funny thing is that Martin actually thinks he is some kind of crusader for independent music, abhorring the likes of steve gottlieb etc, but he will give you nothing, in fact, he recently posted on i-tunes some horrible live solo shows I did, that either he, or one of his scummy little hirelings recorded (I never record my own shows) selling them for $8 each, they were HORRRRIBLE, terrible recordings of crappy shows I played, I had the legal dept at i-tunes take them down, and Martin told me that “technically” he could do what he liked, I said “yes Martin, you ALWAYS do what you like” and what would he get out of it? no one wants to buy that crap, $20? no, what he gets out of it is a way of saying that he’s got me by the balls.
man, that sucks chris.
is that “live cd” he sells in your box set one of those?
Martin’s ego, so sad. He’s need a copy of the new earth by E.T.
no-that’s an “authorized” one, it’s one I did myself, it’s live and studio, it’s actually good, with outtakes from older records, some stuff I did with the late great william tucker, I sell it myself too, though
Don’t forget the infamous Ministry fence incident…
And when Invis released the reissue of Fall of Because (Broadrick and Co) they never were told that it had even come out.
And then there were the smaller labels with distro deals with invis… Possible (MJ Harris) , Lo Fibre (Broadrick), Alleysweeper etc… None have seen any money at all from Atkins…
The list goes on…
Hell of a fucking drummer though.
