I’m really excited about the new album. I think his discography has held up really well. I can’t say exactly why, but I always found his work to be a little more interesting and distinctive than his peers.
Side note: Girl/Boy Song was the first song I ever previewed online before the album came out. I really liked I Care Because You Do (that’s one of the few times that I heard music and geuninely felt like it was unlike anything I’d heard before), but G/BS sounded even better.
“Drukqs” is probably one of my fifteen favorite albums, a designation I reserve for records that simply don’t sound like anything else. There’s a poignancy and individuality to it that takes it way beyond the paint-by-numbers ultra-complexity of the stupidly named “intelligent dance music” genre.
Polygon Window “Surfing on Sine Waves” was probably my first introduction to the man (anyone else remember when WaxTrax! had the U.S. distribution rights to the Warp Records catalog of the early-mid 90s? Another arrow in WT’s quiver, to be sure.)
So, yeah, largely in favor - I’m sure RDJ has probably released some crap but it’s eluded my radar so far.
One rainy afternoon back in September 1996, I naively picked up a copy of I Care Because You Do from a music store I was casually browsing. Didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. I had heard tidbits about this “electronic genius” and was vaguely aware of him releasing some Eno-esque ambient stuff. But that was about it.
I took it home, whacked it on and here I am nearly 20 years later and still a massive fanboy. I would definitely rank Richard D in the top 10 of my most revered musicians and I’ve admired virtually everything he’s ever put out in some form or other.
Thirteen years is a long time to wait, but such is the price that comes with eccentricity and ego. Looking forward to this one.
I’m still in disbelief. I fucking can’t get enough of Aphex.
Check out some of the Drukqs tracks at different tempos. If I recall, Ziggomatic 17 was pretty cool slowed down; it should be on youtube. This was the closest thing to new Aphex Twin tracks until now.
totally dig Aphex Twin
certainly did not go ape like im sure a lot have
hearing about a new release
Surfing on Sine Waves is Gold
I care Because You Do (always a favorite)
Selected Ambient Works 2 remains a staple
DRUKQS is one of the greatest electronic albums of all time
hes got enough to last a life time really
another release
whatever…
Noticed lowelly commented on Syro in another thread.
I’m really enjoying this one. It takes a little time to pick up on all the subtleties so I haven’t picked a favorite track yet but so far it would probably be between minipops67, Xmas_Evet10, and Circlont6a [Syrobonkus Mix] with the edge currently going to Xmas-Evet10.
Only complaints are the synth melody on fz pseudotimestretch+e+3 is too short, I’d like to hear the track go on for another couple minutes. Aisatsana needs a boost on the lil’ birds chirping in the background, I didn’t hear them until I listened with headphones.

I think Richard D. James would find a certain devious delight that you typed out those song titles.
Have listened to it twice, top to bottom, and my initial reaction is that it’s a little same-y. Certainly tighter and more focused than Drukqs. But, I can tell it’s a headphones album and I haven’t had the opportunity to give it its just listen. I can tell there’s shit going on that I’m only vaguely aware of with a casual listen.
But, without a doubt, the worlds a better place with more AFX Polygon James.
