Anime

I’m a big nerd and I’ve been getting back into anime after many years away. Watching Kill la Kill, Initial D, Ranma 1/2, Turn A Gundam and finished Escaflowne and Elfen Lied. Watched Akira again after many years. Enjoying the hell out of it. Anyone else into this?

Watched all the Robotech stuff and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind but that is about it. Perhaps I’ll throw on Akira this weekend, been meaning to watch that one.

Nausicaa is badass, as is most of the Hiyao Miyazaki stuff.
I have a box set somewhere for GATCHAMAN SCIENCE NINJA TEAM (I think that was the name) which was billed in the 70’s/80’s in the US as “BAttle of the Planets”.

I suggest y’all look up a film called “Grave of the Fireflies”. It’s one of the saddest, gut wrenching films you’ll ever see . . . and it’s a cartoon.

I’ve been meaning to watch “Grave of Fireflies” for many years, about time!

Grave of the Fireflies is heavy shit indeed…bummed me out…

Weren’t they going to make a live action Akira at some point?

I’m sort of a noob to Anime, but I’m definitely digging it. I never thought I would.

I watched Death Note and absolutely loved it. I also watched the first version of Full Metal Alchemist and found it enjoyable. I’m currently watching Bleach, which is good so far.

Haven’t watched Death Note, but the comic was really good. Meaning to get to the cartoon.

i’m not an anime fan, but i do watch crackle. There are shitloads of free anime on crackle, fellas.

They do keep talking about it, but every time it gets near to starting it falls apart. I think it was one or more of The Hughes Brothers who was supposed to be directing, the guys who did From Hell and Dead Presidents.

This is the most recent news i’ve seen about it, from last year, sounds like another director had joined, but i know he directed a Liam Neeson film after this story was published, so possibly he’s dropped out too.

I like Johnny Chimpo.
But that’s Afghanistanimation.

The Matrix one comes to mind.

In general I don’t like cartoons.
I like a few of the Miyazaki films.
And I like Beavis and Butthead.
And small doses of South Park and classic Simpsons’ episodes.

What really irritates me is when people try to tell me to go see some Disney film. And they say, “No, you don’t understand! Toy Story is not even a kids’ film, the jokes are like totally for adults and stuff!”

Yeah, whatever. Tell yourself whatever you must. Freak.

Ghost in the shell or ghost in the machine or something along those lines?

I have an on-again, off-again relationship with anime, which is wholly dependent on what crowd I’m running with at the time.

I still remember my childhood ritual of getting up at 5:30am to catch the original Robotech series on one of the local Chicago UHF stations, and being completely mesmerized the whole way through.

And I had another period where I thought Ranma 1/2 was the quirkiest and funniest thing on the planet, and committed entire episodes to memory which I would regale my girlfriend with.

And a couple years ago I had a phase of enjoying the ‘Soul Eater’ series.

But, ironically, I think I mainly gave up on that stuff after residing in Japan and just realizing how much of it there is to consume. Being in the country also allowed me to find a lot of the very interesting underground comics scene that hadn’t found its way to the U.S. I picked up a lot of comics anthology magazines like ‘Garo’ (defunct) and ‘Ax’ and was quite surprised at the diversity of themes and illustration styles that hadn’t been converted to anime yet.

It was callled The Animatrix, a couple of episodes were great, the rest were ok. It showed how the robots came to be in power and why they created the Matrix. That episode’s brilliant, basically humanity reverting to type and being cruel (to their robots). Last Flight of the Osiris was great too, can’t remember if it’s from Animatrix or was a standalone short.

“Final Flight of the Osiris” was part of The Animatrix. They did screen it as a stand alone about 6 months before the release of the sequels.

Ah right, i wondered, it’s been so long since i saw it. Well worth a watch anyway, some of it was a lot better than Reloaded and Revolutions. The Matrix game was pretty cool-looking too, although i seem to remember the controls being a bit crap.

Yeah, it looked cool but played a little clunky.

I actually think that a lot of METALOCALYPSE’s imagery was inspired by Star Blazers (Battleship Yamoto), DJ Pon-3.

I watched Speed Racer when I was a kid. That’s about as close as I get to any of that Anime stuff.

Did you ever watch the live action Speed Racer? Pure insanity, in the best and most brain-melting way. I thought i’d hate it, but it’s pretty stunning.
