It’s the same guys who made The Matrix and Bound. It’s amazing, it’s a kid’s film but it’s great.
Somebody posted something cool that doesn’t suck.
I’ve had an on/off relationship with anime my whole life. Every couple of years I find it all stagnant and the anime-sphere as a whole over saturated, but then I either unearth some kick-ass gem I’d never seen and it gets me back on the wagon, or the planets align and it suddenly becomes a REALLY good time to watch anime.
Most of the stuff I like, new and old, has the unfortunate circumstance of being porn, but fuck it, porn rules, and I’m old enough that the association between anime and porn was pretty much burned into my grey matter. (I remember mom and pop video stores with a dusty, secluded rack of tapes in the corner splayed with tits and robots saying “ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR CHILDREN.”
Recommendations:
Shigurui Death Frenzy
Any Legend of the Overfiend or Urotsukidoji, really
Sword Art Online
Space Dandy
Senran Kagura
Ergo Proxy
Steins;Gate
etc.
DBZ Kai ruined anime for me in the worst way by taking a crazily episodic series and trimming the fat in the best way. I really wish more series had this done to them.
Everyone says I’d really dig Kill la Kill.
Oooooh, Shiguri Death Frenzy sounds right up my alley!
Kill La Kill is really funny and the animation is great, I suspect you’d enjoy it.
I just finished Flowers of Evil which I thought was amazing. Very much turns the High School anime on its head. The rotoscoped art is either going to work for viewers or not, but I thought it worked very well. Great ending too, kind of floored me.
I’ll put both of those on my “must watch” list.
I started watching a random one today, and I’m glad, because thanks to the thunderstorm rolling in, my hip feels like it’s got a grapefruit sized tumor in it, so I’m going nowhere. It’s called Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, and it’s reminding me of a longer, less whacked out, much more coherent FLCL. I normally hate stupid slice of life bullshit, because there’s not enough tits, giant robots, eviscerations, etc., but it’s really fuckin’ good thus far.
Madoka is pretty fun, too. I watch it every now and again, but I’m really bad at watching things if I don’t knock out a season in a weekend. I can’t sit still.
I went through an anime phase about a year ago. Really got into Attack on Titan or whatever its called.
Other than that anime has always been super emo. Always a couple of crybaby characters butthurt about something and just kill the whole vibe for me.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Attack on Titan. After I finish up Bleach, I’ll be checking it out.

It’s gold! Wouldn’t mind giving it another watch myself.
And this is coming from a dude who thinks anime is boring emo crappola.
Agreed with you, Xtra. It’s interesting that there’s a lot of bleed over between English dubbed shounen anime and wangsty emo Linkin Park folks. Seems like I can’t go anywhere on YouTube without finding a Pokemon or DBZ AMV set to Disturbed or Creed.
(Unrelated: the same early 2000s mid-tempo emo radio-rock musical taste of American anime kids is mirrored by jarheads. It’s crazy. I live in the Goddamn Twiligt Zone and could prolly write a thesis.)
Being a fan of anime is a lot like being a fan of anything else: other fans can be problematic. (Lookin’ at you, Ministry. [:P] I kid.)
Other cool-ass anime to check out:
Berserk
Claymore
GitS Stand Alone Complex/2nd Gig
The first season of Big O (the second is noticeably and unfortunately shittier both in writing, pacing, and animation. It’s a shame, because Batman with a Gundam is the best premise for anything.)
It’s hard listing things that aren’t crazy porno.
