alt.gothic

Or was it alt.goth. Can’t remember. But was wondering if any of you know what I am talking about and/or used to post on it. Thinking back, the content and discussion was pretty stupid but there wasn’t really any other way to reach out to remote goth people, either.

I was big into rec.music.industrial back in the day. Never really strayed onto a.g though. Thankfully the old newsgroup archives are still online. Every now and then I’ll dig back and look for something I remembered from 15 years ago and get a good laugh.

HAHAHAHAHA!!! You guys are giving me flashbacks of wasting time in the computer lab in college and causing trouble on those bulletin boards. I used to bomb a lot of them.

I remember alt.gothic, alt.punk, alt.metal, alt.rec.industrial or whatever it was called. I mostly did alt.punk and alt.rec.industrial (this was the one that landed me in front of Student Judicial Affairs).

There were also some pretty funny sex ones where people would make up these outrageous written porn stories based on whatever TV show . . . Full House, Scooby Doo, Gilligans Island, Brady Bunch. They were always completely twisted and wrong but would amuse the crap out of us at 2AM.

Our University had some system called PINE, which I think was kind of the standard for most of the colleges.

The computers in the lab used to have this feature called “peak” or “view” or something and you could pull up what is on one of the other computers. It just made a tiny little eyeballs icon in the corner of your screen when someone was peeking.

Yeah, I liked to spy on everyone after I was shown that. You could disable it, too, to keep eyes off your PC, but most people didn’t even know it was there.

There were two labs, actually. Computer labs that had the full PC/ web, word processing, etc. and other labs that just had the funny terminals with the green or white on black text or whatever . . . and really really loud keyboards.

alt.gothic, alt.music.ministry, rec.music.industrial, alt.music.ministry, I did it all.

alt.punk was great. There were a few topics which were ALWAYS and repeatedly being flogged to death over and over again, including . . .

  1. What is Punk?
  2. Who/What was the first punk/ punk band?
  3. Is Green Day punk?
  4. Is Nirvana punk?
  5. Is Nirvana punk or metal?

All of these topics would be debated and discussed for pages and pages all day long for years on end.

I feel like we should set up betting pools on when DJ is going to delete which post.

PLEASE don’t give him the attention. Along with peace on Earth and good will towards all, I frequently include his disappearance from this board in my nightly prayers…

Actually, I’m just kidding. I don’t pray. I am a confused agnostic.

I believe in God.
But my faith would be greatly strengthened if that dopey dipshit DJ finally disappeared FOREVER like he’s promised us every 10 minutes for the last 2 years. Fuck that dumb blockheaded sack of shit. Seriously. Amen.

Or when he’ll finally make good on his promise to leave forever.
Put me down for a trillion zillion dollars on him NEVER fucking leaving. I take daily shits that last way longer than that baloney-headed goblin’s supposed absence from Prongs.

You guys are awesome.

He really has done the shit the bed routine better than just about anyone else I’ve ever seen on a forum.

Shh. He’s obviously watching this thread very closely, like Zuckerberg at the end of “The Social Network” (refresh… refresh… refresh). Do not enable him.

(Post withdrawn and everyone will spend more than 24 hours talking about it and claim they’re not giving the guy attention unless flagged.)

At what, exactly?
