We’re about two weeks from what’s shaping up to be another year of great playoff hockey. Who’s getting excited for their team?
It’s the first time in 8 years that I can get excited about the Coyotes making the playoffs, and they’re on quite a tear lately (9 wins in a row). Saturday’s SO win over the Blackhawks was huge, and last night we passed the Sharks to take over 1st in the Pacific. We’re also on the Hawks’ heels for 1st in the Western Conference. To think Phoenix almost didn’t have a team 8 months ago…crazy.

Ok prongs puckheads, chime in…

Phoenix is hella strong. I’m really impressed with how well they’re doing. I chock it up to brizgolov. That guy has been my favorite goalie for the past 3 years.
This will be the first time in 5 years that the ducks haven’t made the playoffs (well it’s not official yet but I doubt they will, so sad-wonder if Scott Niedermayer will switch back to the devil’s now that his brother is playing there.)
Just happy that it’s hockey season for another couple of months.

Since the olympics, i’ve been getting back into hockey. Detroit’s playing in a couple hours, so i’ll try and catch that. I have a LOT of catching up to do.
Well, the Blackhawks have been really disappointing ever since the Olympic break. I thought the experience would have been good for their players who played on both team USA and team Canada but it might have caused some premature burnout. Very disappointing, I hope they can get their shit together or else they will very likely choke in the playoffs.
I’m happy for Phoenix as it’s nice to see the underdogs do some damage, I’d root for them over the #@$!! Sharks!
[reply]yeah didn’t the hawks drop 3 straight over here? ducks, kings, Coyotes, in that order?

Nah, it was Flyers, Caps, and Ducks, but they beat the Kings thank god. 4/10 though since the Olympics break… ouch![/reply]
I remember reading that the blackhawks were leading the entire league right before they played the ducks, so I thought it was going to be hunting season on the ducks and the ducks ended up pulling it out! and then I saw the Blackhawks lose again.(I think vs channel was covering the hawks- I thought it was odd cause I rarely see the hawks play, but I got 2 games in 1 week)
I remember thinking their goalie was really sloppy and they didn’t have much of a 2nd line. somebody mentioned post Olympic fatigue. that’s probably right. I don’t generally follow any teams just who ever is playing on VS or whoever plays the ducks and kings and the occasional ESPN game (whenever they feel like running hockey games) so I don’t know if what I saw from the hawks was normal for them and the rest of the league has caught up or if they have really fallen. Kind feel bad for them though

I think I’m gonna ride the Caps bandwagon in the East again this year. Watching them and Pittsburgh square off in the East Finals was epic, until Game 7 turned into a laugher. I’d love to see a Caps-Coyotes Cup, but I’m not gonna get delusional too quickly. I’m just glad they’re back in the dance this year, it’s been an eternity for their fans.
As much as I dislike the Red Wings, I don’t see how they’ll miss the playoffs this year. They’re the kind of team that will find a way to make it in, they just have that kind of luck. I’d actually dread a 1st round Phoenix-Detroit series, we have some not-so-great memories against that team.
no matter the sport always root for PA and Boston teams to get in the playoff and lose. I Love a good sports riot. Sure england puts us to shame but that’s soccer. canada seems to only riot for cancelled concerts.
[reply]Hate to be an a-hole since this is a hockey thread. but are you guys MLB fans?
Not even to make fun of it. Slowest sport on earth!

Ahhh man then you dont know what your missing.
Baseball is a classic game of precision and skill… I mean if a players bat is just a few mm. off it can be the difference between a game winning homerun or a massive pop-out that costs you the game.
Also baseball isn’t like other sports where you can make it to the pros straight out of high school, you’d get demoralized in a sport that depends on 100% talant. I love Baseball teehee

Yeah, for all it’s faults I still love baseball. The game has so many nuances that in today’s post-MTV Attention Deficit society which is so addicted to sound-bytes and 10 second clips, baseball has trouble competing with the NBA, extreme sports etc. It takes a particular personality to truly appreciate the game in this day and age.
So yeah, I don’t want to hijack the hockey thread, but I’d be happy to talk Baseball with you XTRA when the season gets going.
(Under 13 days till opening day! Hallelujah!) [:)]
I am concerned that my beloved Red Wings may not make the playoffs. It’s been quite a long time - 18 or 19 years in a row since last time they didn’t make the playoffs. fyi. I believe the B’s have the longest streak in the NHL at 29 years.
Aw come on, give some other franchises a go! No offense but I think it’s nice to see that they might not make it this time around, not just cause I tend to root for the Hawks, but it’s nice to mix it up a little.
I don’t know what happened to the Hawks or Devlis since the Olympics. Total crappola. An interesting tidbit, the Hawks have the second longest streak in the NHL at 28 years. They never won the Cup during that entire time. They also have Hossa who seems to be a curse in the finals.
It seems to be a curse in Chicago sports. The White Sox had one of the longest dry spells in MLB history not winning the series for 88 years! The distinction of longest dry spell belongs to the Cubs at 102 years! I know this is baseball and we’re talkin Hockey here, but around Chicago we are used to droughts between championships.

yeah I do. the closest I get to baseball is the Playoffs, … … … Sometimes. For the most part it’s 4 hours of watching two guys play 80mph catch!
I mean if a players bat is just a few mm. off
and let’s face it the bat usually is. and the fact that the catcher and the pitcher have to talk in sign language for 2 minutes before pitching is unbearable.
they need to put a pitch clock in the game, kinda the way the ref has to drop the puck within 15 seconds of whistling the play dead in hockey. To slow, let’s go boys, speed it up!

HAAHHAHAHA!! 80 mph catch.
I think MLB plans on implementing a pitch clock. Some pitchers take an eternity to throw a freakin pitch, AND THAT buddy boy would make the game faster.

Really? Wow I may be interested. My interest is up!
but for now back to Hockey.
Kings pulled out a close one tonight over the Avs.
THe kings are looking pretty good. Better than they’ve played in any time I can remember.

Nice! The Hawks were able to kill the Coyote’s killer winning streak! I say this only as a Hawks fan, as I still admire the Coyotes and hope they blow the Sharks out of the playoffs! But mainly I’m happy that it was a great game and the Hawks played well tonight, especially Niemi with that amazing save!
Tomorrow night (or tonight tectonically) looking forward to Penguins vs. Capitols. I know the Capitols clenched the division but the rivalry is always fun to watch, and the Penguins should be playing their asses off! Man, aside from the Canucks most of the Canadian teams have been underachievers this season, good thing for them as a nation that they won gold in Hockey @ the Olympics.
Dude, the sharks have no shot, every year they make the playoffs and every year they’re out in the first round or close to the first round.

Yeah, you’re probably right, but I can’t stand them because 1) I HATE San Jose California and 2) lately they seem to have been a thorn in the Hawks side, not really being a major threat but just a persistent pain in the ass.
