Al, i think. I always get mixed up with the versions of this track, the one with Reznor vocals is supposed to be some lesser-heard version as far as i know. I could be wrong though.
Wow. I have no idea which one I have and have been listening to all these years. I have an original Wax Trax CD (not one of the Rhino re-issues or something of the sort) but I never put that much thought into it.
I’ll play around on YouTube later and see if there are multiple versions we can compare.
I’ve been listening to 3 different versions all morning.
trying to figure this one out.
Okay . . . THIS version is definitely Trent and NOT Al. It is not the version I have on the Wax Trax EP (black cover with PURPLE letters). I think this is the first time I’ve heard it, actually.

I’m pretty sure THIS is the version I’m used to (on the purple text EP):

And this version (from “Cover Up”) is just retarded.
The intro (sample) is totally gay.

same here i have the black / purple cover like the
sabbath cover of mater of reality kinda of set up.

EXACTLY!
got the day off.
decided to pull out the lp
revco physical unauthorize - banned version - test pressing
I always see people debating this, and I think it’s funny. To me, the vocal performances are easily distinguishable.
And I don’t believe Al’s story about just tweaking Trent’s track.
Trent seems to scream it more when he sings it
Broken is the only disc i like by NIN
EDIT: I probably should add that it is also Reznor on the 1000 Homo DJs release but the vocals are tweaked to sound sort of like Al.
This is what I’m talking about. I don’t believe this story. Those are two different performances. With different enunciations and other vocal ticks that can’t be “tweaked” with a distortion module.
Al’s full of shit. He said that to “thumb his nose” at TVT.
I’m with Acid Cripple on this.
I also do not believe those are the same vocals.
If they had said that they used a DIFFERENT take and ALSO did a bunch of tweaking . . . I might believe it.
But the Trent version is completely different and 100% Trent. The other one, while I won’t say 100% is not Trent, I do think is 100% NOT the same vocal track (no matter how much tweaking is done).
The versions i’ve heard, it sounds like the same person with the pitch lowered. Maybe slowed down, some (not much). The live performances with Al doing vocals sound completely different, more laid back. Trent’s screaming is pretty specific. Something I hear in the version that’s credited to Al. It’s not difficult to make a voice deeper.
The dress is white and gold, dammit!
But seriously, I actually went to the Recording Workshop and am a certified sound engineer. And while I am not claiming to be some Adrian Sherwood sound guru, I know enough to tell the difference.
The EP with the Masters of Reality goof cover is Al. The Trent Reznor version is on the Wax Trax Black Box set.
I would argue this with Al himself. [:)]
The one on Side Trax makes it even more confusing because I hear both vocal tracks at different times…

I’d be willing to bet Al’s going by manufactured memories of the whole recording anyway, he thinks things happened in a certain way and they didn’t, but he’ll always remember it his way now. Like in Lost Highway, “I like to remember things my own way, not necessarily the way they happened”.

This.
