Your WORST concert experience

Post it here.

But only if it was unusually…horrible.

I was dragged along to see The Cult back in '94.

Ian Astbury wore snakeskin pants and at one point swore allegiance to the…er…‘Gods’ of Rock’n’Roll.

Yep. It was THAT bad.

Oh and I once lost an expensive mobile phone at a Flaming Lips gig. That was painful.

Heh, I take it you’re not a Cult fan [:)] Shame on you[;)]

As for me, the worst concert experience would probably have to be 2 years ago when I had to go to this metal festival to write about it for the magazine I was working for… Had to sit through 3 days of bad metalcore and black metal. An experience like that can really ruin heavy music for you…

Best concerts - probably Kreator, Rahzel&Patton and New Model Army.

Me and 2 friends went to go see the Smokin’ Grooves tour in 2002, and I ended up sleeping on the streets of Minneapolis for a couple hours and walking around aimlessly for a few more afterwards because we had all lost track of one another (and none of us had cellphones). And earlier in the night one of my friends found 100 dollars literally lying on the ground, while I find nothing of course. Argh.

And then there was a Tool concert in Iowa, with Tricky opening, where a sizeable portion of the crowd were yelling things like “get off the stage you fucking nigger!”. That was also painful.

Hmm, there’s gotta be more but can’t think of anything else right now.

When I saw the Butthole Surfers, I was on the guard rail at the front of the crowd, and I there was this guy behind me who was totally grinding his cock into me. I don’t know if it was intentional (probably not), but it took at least three shoves off the rail to push him back into the sea of people.

Honestly it was Ministry at the Vic in 1999. They came on 90 minutes late and played about 50 minutes. I think the next night they played in Peoria and cancelled the show altogether after they had a full house.

Oddly enough the second show on that tour at the Riv was one of the better ones I’ve ever seen.

Skunk Anansie (1996) - don’t ask me what I was doing there, as there really is no easy explanation. Let’s just say it I owed it to someone to go along.

Ergh! That was an experience I’d like to forget.

Also Kid606, two years ago. I don’t mind his stuff but the guy was such a prancing pony showoff that I ended wishing someone would either clock him one or dump something over his head.

Hey, I saw The Cult on that tour. I kind of liked the show. Ian Astbury did seem quite embittered about other bands being more popular than his.

For me…

The Cars circa 1985 - Music quality excellent, stage presence sucked.

Van Halen circa 1988 - Sammy Hagar lost his voice after 2 songs, Michael Anthony had to take over. They quit after 4 songs.

Debbie Harry circa 1994 - Played this cheezy nightclub, came on stage 2 hours late dressed in fishnets and a garter and obviously drunk as a skunk. Lets just say, her fishnets and garter days were long gone at that point.

The Cure circa 2000 - Played at an amphitheater outside of St. Louis. Their music quality was OK, stage presence not so good. Very disappointing.

Smashing Pumkins circa 2000 - Played at a cool dive in St. Louis but the show just plain sucked. It was more of a Billy Corgan worship session. I’d seen them in the early days (1992) and they were cool.

I’m sure there’s more but I just blocked them out of my memory.

Hmm I have quite a few bad experiences because my friends all have mainstream/terrible taste in music so I have been dragged to quite a few of their SHITTY concerts…

I had to sit through the River City Rebels and some other faggot punk band opening for the Swingin’ Utters at CBGB’s…the Utters were OK I suppose but those River City Rebels were terrible and the lead singer was wearing skin tight ass pants coming down into the crowd and trying to force people to dance.

God I hate punk music…NOT rebellious…NOT innovative…NOT cool…just a bunch of idiots who can’t play guitar.

Also had to watch Blink 182 during their “glory days” with Green Day as an opener. Green Day was pretty good althoough I loath them but Blink 182 couldn’t even play their shitty easy ass songs without fucking up repeatedly. SO HORRIBLE! Plus the millions of screaming teeny boppers everywhere…Only redeeming factor was that some bitch showed me her newly acquired nipple ring and then we hooked up…

Hmmm also went and saw Summer Jam at Giant’s Stadium and it was the most god-awful nigger fest I have ever seen. Just a bunch of fuckin monkeys on stage with their crews flashing their bling bling with 40s in their hands singing over some backing tapes. No live music instrumentation whatsoever. Hell, some of them even had the vocals playing with the song and they wouldn’t even rap they would just sort of mumble along here and there. 50 Cent was there with about 50 other morons on stage and he takes his shirt off and all the girls scream. Then I watched Eminem that fuckin wigger and we left during his set it was so bad he also used backing tapes that included vocals and he would sort of mumble along adding a word here or there.

Also at Giant’s Stadium I saw Metallica during Summer Sanitarium and they were good even though I don’t particularly like them, but two of the openers were Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. Let’s just say I had my fill of nu metal for the next lifetime. Linkin Park was terrible but Limp Bizkit was even more annoying because they played FOREVER and Fred Durst was like shooting a fake cannon of fireworks into the audience and then actually climbed around the stadium singing and shit it was so bad. And then they started playing the riff from Ministry’s “Thieves” to like hype up the song but they never actually did their cover of “Thieves” (thank God it would have ruined the song for me) but it was interesting to me nonetheless kind of wierd they would even be into Ministry…

Also Warped Tour and all that pop punk faggotry…had to sit through Something Corporate, Simple Plan etc.

Oh and I sat through a Cheap Trick show with that fucking song “I Want You to Want Me” or whatever I wanted to kill myself although to their credit they’re still very energetic and talented onstage I just hate that music with a passion.

Saw The Who on some reunion tour with my friend and his dad and the music was just so lifeless and archaic…so dead…

No Fun Festival this year because I was completely alone and my dad was giving me a ride to Jersey so I could hitch a ride back to Syracuse University the next day so I couldn’t stay at the show I just convinced my dad to stop by so I could run in and grab some CDs from the merch stands and while I ran in to grab the CDs I saw how awesome the Fest would have been and was so dissappointed to have to leave it was SUCH a downer!!!

But maybe the worst was dragging my preppy Jew friend to see Skinny Puppy in 2004 and I was having the fucking time of my life LOVING that concert and the whole time he’s literally tugging on my sleeve saying “Yo dude these guys are fucking Nazis man I wanna get out of here blah blah” finally annoying me to the point where I left with him before the encore OI was so fucking pissed off to this day I will never forget that and it is one of the worst decisions I have ever made and I will always wish I had stayed at that show.

You sound like a lot of fun to hang out with.

KISS (without make-up) twice! …was pretty harsh

I’m trying to think of all the shite my wife has drug me to:

Bjorn Again
The Cranberries (who actually were pretty good)
No Doubt
Avril Lavigne (who is hot, so it wasn’t that bad)
and one of those girl group things…TLC or Destiny’s Child, or something. THAT sucked.

Thank god for booze.

Drove to Philly from NY to see Killing Joke but Jaz was “feeling ill” so they cancelled right before the show. But I did snag a cool KJ concert poster off the wall.

I managed to get a guy to drive my friend and I to see Pigface back in 94 when I didn’t have a car. We drove 2 hours to see them and when we finally get there, the venue is vacant except for several pieces of paper taped on the windows saying “The Pigface concert for tonight is cancelled”. Rumor had it that it was due to low ticket sales or somesuch. Really sucked after going to all that trouble. So I missed out on the Team 94 tour and since they didn’t bother to make the show, I haven’t bothered to see them since.

Heh, I take it you’re not a Cult fan [:)] .

Well…yes and no. But more no than yes.

Wow, everybody else has had it much worse than me…Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, The Billy Corgan Experience, Van Halen, Blink 182, Metallica…?

eeeewwwwwww!

I once walked out of a Pere Ubu concert once 'cos they started playing blues - and I have a rule that if any band I fork out hard earned cash to see starts playing the blues…then I’m good as gone.

i once went to watch sheep on drugs ('93 i think), but their computer ‘had broken’ so there was just a fat dude telling jokes…

I saw the stone roses play their last ever gig (i think), and ian brown was absolutely fucking terrible. he couldn’t hit one note.

saw eminem in about '98 i think. every song was about one minute long. seemed he had some sort of attention/concentration problem.

there’s probably a few more lodged somewhere in my brain.

incidentally, there were a few gigs i thought would be absolute shit, that turned out quite good… inkubus sukubus, faithless, nick cave (i wasn’t a fan at the time!), pavement, alabama 3. and rod stewart and roger waters… ahem… [blush]

Oh wow. Y’know that’s one of the most infamous gigs in the history of British music. Kudos just for being there.

Was it really that bad. Am interested to know (in some detail if possible) what actually happened.

The Stone Roses had it big time and then proceeded to do fuck all for about five years - and when they finally did release an album, it was an absolute turkey. Musically great…but the lyrics!!! Man, they were abysmal.

Some friends of mine went to the Oasis gig here in Australia where the Gallagher brothers fought with each other the whole time. Said it was the most painfully terrible gig experience imaginable.

Anyone would have thought that just seeing Oasis would have been painful enough…???

yeh, god, i have no time for oasis! but at least the stone roses recorded a few classic tunes. unfortunately when i saw them i think there was only two of the original line up left. i remember that aziz guy was on guitar and was it a new drummer? i forget now. i actually had a mate that was at the spike island gig. anyway, yeh, he was awful. don’t know if he was off his head or what. the music was fine though. i suppose it could have been bad monitors, but ian has a bit of a reputation for being a bit shit anyway. oh well, at least i was there [;)]

i was also at Nirvana’s last ever UK gig, and Faith No More’s last ever gig with Jim Martin. guess i might be bit of a jinx…

just looked it up, and it was definitely the last stone roses gig that i was at. i guess a lot of people would rather forget that day, lol.

mind you, RATM, Underworld and the Prodigy were still good [;)]

oh yeh, sonic youth were there too!

just found a site with the line up, i forgot there were so many cool bands there… even the butthole surfers, lol.

Oddly enough the second show on that tour at the Riv was one of the better ones I’ve ever seen.

I went to that first Riv show, I was 4th in line there early, watching the crowd form and Paul and Rey walk down the street and through the front door unnoticed. Opening band was awful I think their guitar player worked a bit on Filth Pig and they had a new singer. From my spot I could see there were lyric sheets taped to the stage for Al to refresh his memory. Overall I thought the show was all right but they came out for the encore started the song the sound system turned to shit and they called it a night halfway through the song.

I got free tickets to a radio show in 2002, some ‘Twisted Christmas’ or something of the sort from the local rock station. The lineup was defintiley painful, BoysHitsCar (which wasn’t that bad), 40 Degrees Below Summer and Drowning Pool, possibly some other ones in there I’m blocking out of my memory. The show was cramped, oversold, hot and sounded bad. It all escalated up until Drowning Pool took the stage as headliner. Right before they go into ‘Bodies Hit the Floor’ song the singer brings out a… shovel?.. and proceeds to beat it upon the stage during the chorus. It was almost performance art in it’s surrealness. If they’re music wasn’t such a turd I would have taken it for irony. Summer after the singer died, people shrugged and life went on.
