Your Thoughts: Hate Dept.

I know it has been an eternity since the last time we did one of these, but with all of the pessimism and negativity around here, I’ve had no interest.

With this installment, I wanted to get a discussion going on Hate Dept? Over all thoughts? Best songs, albums, tours, mixes, etc. Anything will be accepted sans the shitty posts from Dead Guy.
I will put mine in a different post.

I first got into HD in 94 with Meat your Maker. The first thing I noticed outside of Seibold’s unique and somewhat clean vocals was the amazing production. HD has always had top notch sound and recording. They stood out among their peers as a result.
I am still a huge fan and thoroughly enjoy Seibold’s work. If I had to pick one album as my favorite it would have to be Omnipresent. My top tunes by HD are:

  1. I am Truth
  2. Release It
  3. Peace is Your Dream
  4. Dead Peddler
  5. New Power
  6. Beat Me Up

One of the better bands doing the whole coldwave sound in the mid '90s. I saw them live and they were very punk, which was cool, but they were also one of those bands had all the drums and electronics and samples on a DAT that they just sang and played guitar with, which was disappointingly common back then.

I have seen HD twice, and both times they had a live band. I also loved the banter and constant "Fuck you"s that they threw out during their shows. Seibold was certainly one of the better front men in the genre.

I saw them open up for Skinny Puppy…I think. I like them and their last release is pretty good. I didn’t like there last official release but the ep and O are great. My favorite tune is Peace is Your Dream

Saw them live 3 times. The first 2 were in a tiny club in town to a disappointingly small audience. But they still definitely delivered. I liked those better than the show opening for Ohgr a few years later.

The House That Hate Built is a great compilation of the high points and has the best versions of tracks that are out there in several forms. The new album is very well done as well. I was sad that it didn’t get much press, since it really deserved more attention than it got.

I’ve seen them twice. His voice is like Geddy…either you can deal or not!!

I have to agree, New Ghost was very well done and deserved more love.

I saw them a few years back opening for either ohgr or puppy. i think it was ohgr. i had never heard of them, and maybe i went into it with a bad attitude… but I didn’t mind the band but the singer pissed me off. i guess if i knew their stuff better I would like it. but he just seemed like a dick. i think in atlanta someone yelled something back at him too like “fuck you dude” or a “you suck” thing.

Was this that band that did that shitty cover of “Effigy” on that Ministry tribute album?

Yeah…it was Ohgr. That was a great show here in NYC!!!

I’m so glad you offered your thoughts in a separate post [crazy]

I was at the NYC show too!!! At the Limelight (which has since been shutdown and now houses an IHOP), which was an amazing venue.

What I remember about Hate Dept - Steven basically went out and said FUCK YOU too all the fans in the front. Completely cursing them out. I had no idea this was a joke. I don’t think many of the OhGr fans did either. On Litany, there was a huge thread about how Hate Dept sucks and they disrespect fans, etc. Someone finally chimed in and said IT WAS A JOKE.

Fast forward 10+ years - I saw them at Cold Waves. Top Notch. A ton of fun and great performance. Steve is the nicest dude (I HATE HIM).

Seibold is quite possibly the nicest guy in the entire genre. I met him back in 99 for an interview and then again at the first Cold Waves. Both times we was very gracious and friendly.
I really enjoy his remix work too. The 16volt vs HD remix wars that came out back in the day really showcase what he is capable of.

I am a big 16Volt fan and groups like Acumen Nation, Numb and Hate Dept. were always like the Rent-A-Center version of 16Volt to me.

I wish I kept my Isolation Tank catalog from back in the day.

Isotank was awesome. I remember in the little catalog descriptions they seemed to compare everything to either Skinny Puppy or Dead Can Dance.

Yep, That show at the Limelight was really good. Limelight was playing Acid Horse before HD went on.

I’m just going to pretend it’s 2014 and sit this out.
