The new Portishead album is not only their best album, but it is, pound for pound, the best album of the year so far.
Third got leaked some time ago in the usual circles. It’s GOOD, and IMO the best album of the year so far (what, where you expecting Cover Up to be my pick??) but it sorta sounds like they’ve lost something in the 11 years since Roseland NYC Live (one of the few instances where I find the live version arrangement superior to every song’s album version). Third starts off pretty decently but drags a bit towards the middle but then picks up on the last 2-3 songs. And Beth doesn’t seem to quite slide her vox around the beats like on the earlier albums.
I give this one an 8, whereas the first two were 9s and Roseland Live was a 10.
Roseland has to be one of my favorite live albums ever, by any band. It’s so clean sounding, it really give all the parts alot more punch.
