Why tabloid newspapers shouldn't even be used to wipe your arse

The following article was published in the Scottish ‘Sunday Express’ about the survivors of the Dunblane school massacre (March, 1996) in which 16 children under the age of 6 were killed and many more injured by a lunatic:

The author of the article, Paula Murray, suggests the survivors of the massacre “shame” their deceased peers by talking about sex, drinking and other teenage activities on their social/network site pages. The author basically stalked the teenagers on the web and then printed what she found in the above article. I didn’t think an individual could stoop so low as to concoct should disgraceful shite for a headline story. I hope she, and others responsible for printing this article, are sued.

This is an example of why tabloid “newspapers” should not be even printed; they allow such nonsense to be distributed for money and they are a terrible waste of ink and paper.

Here is a background on the Dunblane massacre for those who did not hear of it before:

i still read print papers.
i like to be able to look at words on a page instead of a screen.tabloids are not going away. they serve a purpose–entertainment for people with half of their brains missing or people like me-- i read them rarely, but for amusement.i want to keep up with the morally bereft.
shame on them.

The Scottish Sunday Express printed a grovelling and simultaneously egotistical apology where they stated they were sorry blah blah and how they as a newspaper were somehow vital and important to Scotland throughout history by giving us their news. They only apologised out of national and international outrage. It’s sickening.

I heard there was an apology but have not seen it. It sounds obnoxious though from what you said, that they end up trying to blow their own trumpet in an apology for what they did.

Regardless an apology is not enough, the people responsible should at least lose their job.

You’re right. There was no mention of the person who wrote the article or the editor losing their jobs.

This is the apology from the SSE website:

"THE Scottish Sunday Express has enjoyed a long love affair with the people of our nation.
It is 81 years since the first edition of this great newspaper rolled off the presses in Glasgow.

Over that time, we have established a reputation for crusading journalism built on the twin cornerstones of honesty and integrity.

Scottish Sunday Express readers expect us to shine a light on the wrongs in our society, to expose the crooks, highlight the hypocrites and to give everyone the odd chuckle with the extraordinary stories that ordinary Scots so often have to tell.

We think we are pretty good at all that, and everyone involved in producing this newspaper takes pride in what we publish.

It is also hugely important to us that the Scottish Sunday Express reflects the feelings of the people of Scotland.

On March 8 we got that all wrong.

Our front-page story about the teenage survivors of the Dunblane massacre and their use of social networking websites has caused terrible offence, not only in that town, but across Scotland and around the world.

It is our belief that nobody was misquoted, but the story was undeniably inappropriate. It has upset the young people we named and caused great distress to their parents.

Where possible, we have spoken to the families involved and given them a heartfelt apology. Today we apologise to you, our loyal readers."

What a load of self serving crap. They even had the audacity to try and defend an element of the original article (“It is our belief that nobody was misquoted”) As Cing Clart already pointed out they spend most of the article trying to say they think they’re great.

No one has been disciplined as I know of yet.

This is just a fob off.
