which famous musician would you like to have dinner/ drinks with?

i don’t know if this thread’s been done before, but here goes.

i’ve never met willie nelson, but he wrote one of my all time favorite songs, “crazy” . i’d buy him some barbecue anytime. and then i would decline the pot smoking extravaganza later.
there are others, but that one comes to mind.

Are they buying? Ha!

Tom Waits. Probably be very interesting. Perhaps even Keith Richards to know what’s going on up there.

what’s going on with keith richards is probably the same as willie. adrenalin rushes, and then uh…“down time”. i have a friend who lived on st. thomas, and would see keith richard’s and brood taking a boat over to st. john and the staff would have to have a bottle of jack ready for him for the fifteen minute boatride.
(god, why do i know all this useless information—oh yeah. because it’s funny)

I’d like to meet Robert Ashley (minimalist composer) who I don’t know qualifies as famous but his work is very inspiring to me and I’d love to hear his ideas about bringing the motivating concepts of opera into the context of modern music.

Otherwise, Eno’d be fun as would Peter Christopherson and on the other end of the spectrum Keith Richards would be pretty amazing as well. I don’t know of anyone else who better embodies the “Pan” element than him.

Tom Waits for sure.

I’d say Fiona Apple as well.

oh man! david thomas, with all his sweatyness and girth. but goddammit, i wanna know how 30 seconds over tokyo was born.
oh yeah… cleveland ohio.
god knows what thomas eats. i give him precedence over willie. i actually met david thomas once while he was playing a pinball game at tut’s in chicago, but he seemed fairly disturbed–directly before pere ubu went onstage.
i would have loved to have had the opportunity to have some minimalist snacks with john cage too.

First and foremost - Thomas Dolby. He’s one of my main influences in electronic music, and I would meet him at a local brewhouse to knock down a bunch of pints, and discuss his studio and stage set-up, technology, a little astronomy.

Others…

Mark Burgess (The Chameleons) - seems like an affable guy

Stan Ridgway - A guaranteed entertaining conversation, no matter what the topic

Alex Lifeson and/or Jamie West-Oram - I’d buy them drinks and grub for some advanced guitar lessons

Foremost for me Tom Ellard, as accessible as he’s been on the web over the years it would still be cool to pick his brain about electronics over a couple of pints.

Julian Cope
David Bowie
Brian Eno
Ray Davies

and Bob Dylan

well Tori amos seems like she’d be able to carry ona wonderfull conversation…
otherwise I’d say Bowie, Perry Farrell, eh a lot of people… i like talking to people… so even that guy from rockstar supernova i’d probably find SOME interesting conversation in there

i think i’d like a lunch with p j harvey.just for the goofeyness.

ray davies.
i think wempathy wins for most inscrutable person to dine with.
that guy (ray davies) is a weirdo of sorts. but did pen some of the most memorable pop lyrics. nothing beats “i believe that you and me last forever”. doesn’t get better than that in it’s simplicity.
yeah, i know. english major, me. eh, maybe that’s why i like the early rap artists (last poets) . simple stuff.

This one’s easy…

Roots Manuva.

Julian Cope, great choice Wempathy! The guy comes across as totally crazy and also a complete genius, I cannot imagine that the conversation would be boring!

Always been fascinated with St. Julian. We’re about the same age, he and I, and he’s from Glamorganshire Wales, which is where I can trace part of my ancestry to as well. Author, artist, singer, poet. Droolian can do it all.

krautrocksampler introduced me to a shit ton of great music for that alone Julian will always have a special place in my heart.

His three albums on American are not usually held in high regard but they’re probably my three favorite. I think Thighpaulsandra’s production is simply amazing. I’ve lost interest in his latest more metally music but I still love checking his website and reading his rants (sometimes totally cracked, sometimes very insightful, always entertaining).

John Frusciante, and when they were around Sid Barret, Jean Micheal Basquiat and Frank Zappa would have been fun

Altho I’ve learned that it can be much better if there is a distance between you and your “idol” (excuse the use of the word - I couldn’t think of a better one). Alex Lifeson would be a trip. He’s hilarious. I’d also like to have a cup of joe with senior chris.

This one is easy:
