Killing Joke-Night Time
Many eons ago, I went to Stony Brook University, and had a lot of problems with both the administration and the school in general. (I’ll spare you the details, other than to say there was a lot of corruption, to the student’s detriment, going on behind the scenes of kids studying on the grassy mall that come with the brochure.)
One day, they announced they’d be leading potential students through our dorm (recently renovated) as part of a “look how cool our school is” stunt. So I slapped on Mike Patton’s “Adult Themes For Voice” and cranked it up to 10. I wonder how many of those kids wound up going to the Brook…
Oh man that is a good one to drive people ape shit with…that is the one that he recorded in different hotels rooms across the world…lots of John Zorn will work also…and Patton with Zorn…
Just mentioning Mike Patton drives me wild.
Back in the sticks in the 90s, this was the best I could do
Good? Bad? Why?
I’m a big fan of Patton but I can understand him rubbing ppl the wrong way…
There isn’t one single thing Patton has done that I can listen to, at least that I’m aware of. I can’t turn it off fast enough. I know he has a decent sized following. I don’t get it though.
I like Faith No More. At least, I like a fair chunk of their back catalogue… He’s best when he’s not trying so hard to be Mr Weird.
Stripsearch is one of my favorite 90’s tunes. Same goes for Evidence.
I admire Mr Bungle and Fantomas more so than ‘like’ them. I have a lot of respect for those guys in terms of musicianship.
Having said that, I have the first Mr Bungle on vinyl and still spin it quite regularly much to the annoyance of my girlfriend.
Agreed. It’s hard to be neutral on the guy. His work can be very polarizing.
That’s one of the best prog rock albums of all time. Literally every genre of music ever created rears its head at some point.
I’ve never connected with his works either and the cult of worship surrounding the dude has always been a bit of a head scratcher for me too.
Skinny Puppy - Rabies & Last rights
Mr Bungle - Disco Volante
edit: I went to the vinyl shop in my hometown this morning and this discussion was in my head. I saw Disco Volante and thought ‘oh…why the hell not?’ It’s one hell of a wild ride to be sure.
I listened to Disco Volante on psychoactive drugs one night back when it came out…that’s was a strange night…
Steven Wilson Presents Intrigue; Progressive Sounds in UK Alternative Music 1979-89 (2023)
I just read a review about that release…I’m gonna grab that up…a lot of the bands that he talks up on his podcast with Tim Bowness…

A ton of stuff I never heard of. Pretty good so far.
I saw a BUFFALO patch on a vest James Hetfield was wearing.
I’d never heard of the band so I searched YouTube and found this band from Australia (which I later learned was not the one James was reppin’, hahahaha!!!). There’s also another obscure NWOBM band called Buffalo.
But whatever. I’m kind of obsessed with how badass these Aussie mofos are.
They’re like a sweaty down-undah version of UFO or something. I’m lovin’ it.
