Such a great album. Recently got it on vinyl.
It’s a massive record…I read a review once that said it was “the musical equivalent of a nuclear warhead being detonated directly in to your eardrum”…always thought that was accurate…
And also, how often do you hear a Cop Shoot Cop cover?
That’s rad! I like 2 songs from Cop shoot cop:
Anyday now and it only hurts when I breathe.
I’ve heard of strapping young lad but I’ve never listened to any songs I may have to check them out
Oh that’s cool to have met him! He’d be around various LA clubs so I knew people in his circle when I was there but never actually met him. His genuine love for electronic music comes through so strong in his videos. He’s super passionate even after all these years.
Woah they covered Room 429? Gotta listen now
Ever hear any other of Devin Townsends stuff, grmps? He is incredibly prolific…
I’m not a big fan of covers but this one is really good, imo… although if you don’t like the rest of the album you won’t like it either…
cEv is good friends with that Otto von Shirach guy, who is a big Miami electronic DJ/musician. He even released an album or two through Subcon, cEv’s label. That might be why you see him down there a lot.
Yeah I know…Ive known Otto a very long time…seen many of his gigs…first time I met him I was with a girl I had just started dating and we went to this area in a place called Crayndon Park…he walked out of the mangroves with 2 chicks and he had a silver tin foil hat that looked like something Sun Ra would wear and he was eating a papaya (he has a thing about papaya and mangoes)…he tried to get me to go look at some plastic alligators that people put down in the water…we declined but I got to talking to him a bit and then I would always see him around and talk with him…very cool dude but definitely very eccentric…and yeah the night I met cEv was at a gig he was doing with Otto and some other Miami regulars…
In fact my avatar pic with my friend and Mario and Luigi was taken at a festival where Otto was playing…cEvin might have been at that one as well haha
I have not. At least not that I know of.
I just started clicking on various YouTube videos and sampling some of Devin’s stuff. Wow! What a bizarre, creative, and massively talented explosion of art from a weird madman genius. I honestly can’t say I’m a fan of most of it, but that’s really just because it’s not something I gravitate to musically, but I’m still in complete awe of it all. I always just thought he was some extreme metal dude and never really looked past the few SYL tracks I’d heard on various sampler discs.
While I’m probably not intellectual or mature enough to sit and savor most of the music, looking at some of the live performances I think that would still be an awesome experience. It’s just such an atmospheric assault and I have a lot of “WTF am I even witnessing?” reaction. Must be incredible to be immersed in it as it’s happening.
First time I saw Devin he was singing for Steve Vai…it was his first high profile gig on tour for the Sex and Religion album from 93…he was only like 19-20 years old and he looked like a Hare Krishna on meth and was completely unhinged haha…he was climbing all over the speaker stacks and blowing snot out of his nose into the crowd(unfortunately for me,I was an unlucky recipient)…he has had a rather well known history of mental issues…they seem to be more under control these days…
Ive seen him a number of times over the decades saw him again a couple years ago and he was so excellent…if you get a chance to see him it really is an incredible experience …
His discography is large and varied…it isn’t all great but when it hits it hits hard…there are many different projects under many different names and it can be daunting trying to figure out where to start or what to seek out…
Evil Mothers - Crossdresser
Last night I went and saw Twin Temple and Bridge City Sinners - a good show, recommended.
My sentiments exactly. I looked up a few SYL songs and it it’s not my thing but just odditie of the dude made me give the tunes more time than I would have normally.
Yeah but that shit grows in you…
Also look at video or pic of Strapping Young Lad era to see Devin with the ultimate “skullet” haircut you’ve ever seen…
He looks like the bad guy from the original Robocop with long hair
I like Devin Townsend Project somewhat - just not a huge fan of his vocal style.
Musically I really dig it though.
Cynic - Ascension Codes
I never gave him a chance. I did pick up Steve Vai’s Sex & Religion back in 93 which I thought was a let down for me at the time. Not because of Devin but the follow up to Passion and Warfare didn’t hold true. Passion and Warfare is killer!!
