What are you listening to right now?

In all fairness I actually love early Zappa. Freak Out!, We’re Only In It For The Money, Lumpy Gravy, Roxy & Elsewhere and Uncle Meat are amongst some of my favourite releases of any artist in any genre and I have spent many years (not too mention hundreds and hundreds of dollars) tracking down mint copies of each.

Having said that though there’s a lot of shit to wade through:

Chunga’s Revenge, Man From Utopia, Joe’s Garage, Tinseltown Rebellion, You Are What You Is…

Zappa’s like “Weird” Al, only not funny.

Well, obviously that’s highly subjective…I’ve never laughed at anything Weird Al has ever done…just unfunny corny shit to me…and I never listened to Frank for the humor aspect anyway…I listened for the compositions, the guitar playing and his ability to pick the best musicians in the world to play his shit…he was never trying to specifically do comedy it was just a bi-product of the shit he was doing…Frank was a composer, not a comedian…but whatever,on it goes…

Zappa was cool. You do have to be committed to do some serious digging for his gems…which is very easy if you go to amazon or the such for customer reviews etc.

Here’s a little gift for you queer…

Haha, yeah I haven’t seen that one in a while,Akbar…it’s hard to find something involving Zappa that I haven’t seen or heard…as I said,I was and am a bit obsessive about his work…I can’t believe he has been gone for 20 years…

Wow…I didn’t realise he’d been gone for so long! I’m sure he’s astral travelling and jamming with Sun Ra & Captain Beefheart as we speak!

and with Edgar Varese and Johnny “Guitar” Watson…

I like Zappa but haven’t done much digging. I have had Sheik Yerbouti and Joe’s Garage since high school. My wife turned me on to Freak Out. CREEEEEEAAMM CHEEEESE!

Funnily enough, Weird Al has a song called “Genius In France” the lyrics of which are vaguely sorta about Jerry Lewis and not really funny at all. However, the MUSIC is a straight up first rate Zappa tribute (one of his songs that is not an actual parody, but “in the style of”). Al has always had a pretty killer band, and they just absolutely nailed all these amazing Zappa tropes. It is kinda funny hearing somebody like Al do them, because it gives a new context in which to grasp the sheer scope of the musical vocabulary Frank added to the world. Call me crazy, but it really stopped me dead in my tracks when I heard it for the first time last year.

Wow! Didn’t know I’d touch off a lil’ shitstorm. Frankly, I like Zappa a lot, but I can totally see how other people, regardless of their musical tastes, would be turned off (too much noodling, raping the ghost of doo-wop, etc.).

Eerie electronic psychedelia…only listened to it once and it’s definitely one that seems to be a grower…maybe not as strong as Messe…Garm only sings for a brief time also…

Never thought of what Frank does as ‘noodling’…there was always a purpose to his extended solo’s that was compositional…when I think "noodling’ I think Phish…
