What are you listening to right now?

Christian Death - Only Theater of Pain

Weird to think I’m older now than Rozz Williams was when he died.

I know. I had the same realization a few years ago. I always think of these guys that I grew up listening to, seeing around town, and looking up to as SOOO much older than me and it just seems like regardless of time progression that they always have been and always will be older than any age I’ll ever attain. Maybe I’m the only one that thinks like that, I don’t know. I guess part of it is that I’m now 38 and I feel just as young and immature as I did 20 years ago.

Gary Clark Jr, Is in-fucking-credible!!!

I was blown away by him a couple weeks ago when I saw him on “Live at the white house” or whatever that PBS concert was that had all of those blues musicians playing at the white house.

Aside from the new Ministry video, which is more funny and goofy than outright horrible, I’m really, REALLY digging this record by the band Twin Sister.

I hate it.

When I was shacked up with this hipster chick that wound up had been using me as her sancho and as a retreat from the pressures of babydaddy, college, work, and (for a minute) cocaine, this was the kinda shit she liked. Really simplistic, androgynous, lo-fi, twee-poppy indie girl shit that really pissed me off most of the time. The music was fucking sterile and the lyrics were… Jesus, I dunno… obtuse for the sake of obtuseness? I dunno. It just screamed “overprivileged, awkward, creatively-bent-but-kinda-bad-at-it-but-really-ironic-so-its-okay white bitch” to me. I hated it.

This is pretty much the same thing. But Twin Sister? They get it right. They get it so fucking right.

I’M GAY.

Ministry - Relapse

Yeah, I feel a little dirty…

An old friend and I decided to play out at a few yard parties, open mics and other kinds of social events this summer. I’m not really sure what the plan is…and neither is he, but we thought maybe we’d run through a bunch of songs, just in case. It’s an acoustic guitar/piano singing duo. So here’s a list of some of the songs we’ve been running through, which is also what I’ve mostly been listening to…

Bewlay Brothers - Bowie
Hot Burrito #1 - Gram Parsons
Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell
Running the World - Pulp
I’m Not Sorry - Morrissey
By This River and 7 Deadly Finns - Brian Eno

There’s about 6 other songs we’ve tried to work out but discarded like Golden Brown - Stranglers, The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore - Walker Brothers…

We’re still shaking things out. I’d like to selct maybe one of the piano ballads from one of the first 4 Roxy Music albums next. Not sure which one…still deciding.

wempathy, that sounds like a lot of fun. to be honest, I don’t recognize any of those song titles but maybe if I heard them. Any thoughts of throwing in a Bob Denver song or two? Good luck!

Bob denver? Fucking Gilligan? Did you mean john denver?

HA! Chuckles all over the place this morning.

RevCo, that “Creep” thread put me in the mood, only thing I have here at work is my RetroSpectacle boot though…

my favorite noise/experimental record from 2011. unique sounds, meticulously arranged. Not all “harsh” noise either, parts of it remind me of the weird field recording passages and loops from SWANS’ “Soundtracks for the Blind”.

As grumpy points out DJ, I’m sure you meant John Denver, which may or may not a reference to the story I told about my wife dating a member of John Denver’s band in the mid 70’s. And actually, he (my wife’s ex-BF) was the guy who penned “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” so perhaps my friend and I should consider covering that song…tongue in cheek. Perhaps a metal/electronica version might be entertaining. We’ve already rehearsed a song called “Cuddly Toy” which was popularized by the Monkees but it didn’t really work.

that’s funny, wemp- I’m roping my wife and two other people to cover the Monkee’s “Zilch” with delays and distortions at this year’s noisefest in October.

See…the world needs more of this ^, and less of things like Relapse.
