WAX 242 - Headhunter (Live Rehearsal)

Quick and dirty rehearsal demo for the upcoming shindig. Heavily loop-based, programmed with an additional drum bed and synth arp. I play live keys (the chorus bass pads, which need some tweaks) and handle the R23 backing vox, and my bandmate Scott is on lead vox. It’s a decent take, but we’ll tighten it up and and rock it next Saturday.

Sounds really good…nice!

did you have a hard time finding the synth fx for this? they sound really close. or did they use some real common soundset?

I used a voice resonator effect, combined with an exciter on a standard ‘big’ synth pad for the bass and lead part at the end. I think I need to back off the resonator level a bit, it’s creating too much of a tin can effect, and that synth needs to be louder in the mix. It still doesn’t have the bright sheen of the (assumed) DX7 voices they used, but I just wanted to get close. It’s still a little too trancey-sounding for me, but it will do. The 1/6th note arp ‘blips’ were easy to dial in, and I basically laid my own arp pattern on top of the existing blips in the loop. It may sound like we’re just playing over an instrumental of the song, but I chopped up V1.0 into 8 or 9 1-2 measure loops, so I could create a hybrid of V1.0 and V3.0 (has the intro of the 12", but the basic layout of the LP version). I do need to work on my R23 part a little this week!

Thanks for the comments.

I hear what carmangary is hearing and will second his suggestion.

It’s not so much speaking the words to tell/sing the story as it is forcefully saying the words as if they were commands set to a tune/music. If that makes any sense.

sounds really good.

The lead vocals, the R23 vocals…both?

I LOVE IT!!!

We’ll be tightening up the vox during tomorrow night’s rehearsal. Thanks for the input everyone.

Just finished We Shall Cleanse The World (essentially the YGDSOB version with the intro, drum fills, and ending). I’m VERY happy with how the sequence and sampling came out.

The music itself sounds great. Nice job.
