Luc Van Acker sang some on that tour. Not bald, but he was an alternate singer.
trent would never in his lifetime do a ballad–the dreaded coin in the pocket with most bands still dealing with labels.
if “soft” means that, uh…no.
???
Almost every NIN album has a song that could be classified as either “soft” or “a ballad”.
Something I Can Never Have
Hurt
The Great Below
Right Where It Belongs
Zero-Sum
“Soft” was the word Trent used in the interview, btw.

I sometimes wonder if ed listens to much of the music by the musicians he comments on and knows.
i am sure its the manner in which you both use ‘ballad’. See, like ed i think a ‘ballad’ (unless it’s sir franky crisp) is generally a boring song written entirely out of step with an artists profile purely to generate airplay/sales. Extreme for example.
otoh, you have a case like metallica’s fade to black, which was certainly a ballad then, but not really gonna break to radio. same way i took ‘something i can never have’.
its the same way ppl call stuff ‘emo’ or ‘post rock’ and honestly are applying the terms to music not really involved with either genres as they were originally ‘tagged’.
NIN has plenty of ballads and soft songs. There is really is no argument here. I agree that Special Ed seems to not be familiar with NIN’s material.
As for the definition of “ballad” meaning it has to be out of sync with their catalog and made to generate sales, that just seems silly to me. That may have applied in the 80s for hair metal, but were ballads really so popular in the nineties and this decade for rock artists?
Trent has many soft songs. And yes he did say somewhere in a quote that “Ministry is the single most important influence on the music of NIN”. It was literally that direct.
Call it whatever suits you then.
I don’t think of the Johnny Cash cover as a ballad.
EDIT: I looked up the definition of ballad and I suppose it is rather subjective.
In fact, I wouldn’t mind hearing a good tormented goth/industrial ballad right about now.
“I don’t exist when you don’t see me!
I don’t exist when you’re not there!
What the eye don’t see won’t break your heart,
You can make believe when we’re apart,
But when you leave, I disappear!”
Personally, I consider The Fall to be be ministry’s “ballad”. Possibly the only one too.
The Angel
Should Have Known Better
Or maybe those aren’t ballads. They’re probably the “softest” songs Al’s ever done, though.
I think you could view “Isle Of Man” as a ballad too.
say you’re sorryyyyyyy
Forgot Paisley - not at all a ballad, but probably Ministry’s softest song ever.
you know i was listening to isle of man v1 ,you candescifer the lyrics easier and it is an enviromentalsong warning of pollution and basically not respecting the earth pro- getting back to nature .some of the besty lyrics he’swritten in my opinion and it’s funny how much of it came true with global warming
Could ‘Lay Lady Lay’ be construed as a ballad?
Just read about Everly Brothers initial misinterpretation of Dylan’s ‘Lay Lady Lay’. They thought it said “lay across my big breasts, babe” and declined to record it on the basis of it’s lesbian overtones.
Wha ha ha ha

My mascara is running…
There is nothing wrong with a good ballad. In fact, I wouldn’t mind hearing a good tormented goth/industrial ballad right about now. Something with some anvil noises out in the distance. That would be cool.
“Now I’ve Seen It All” by Good Courage (circa 1995-96) is pretty good.
All Day
I didn’t think it was possible for that song to suck, but that proved me wrong. Why slow that song down that much? To make it more, i dont know, menacing, or less like WS? Great song butchered
Over The Shoulder
Now that’s nice.

That’s the funniest fucking thing I’ve read all week.
I could barely hear that shit. All Day sounded pretty lame if he could just carry it like “aall daaaay” in that same low tone it would really help. Over the Shoulder was outstanding.
