USSA Tour Reports/Feedback/Opinions

hey afra, thanks for the report. cynthia plastercaster was at the show too and said it was awesome.

wish I saw the NYC show. haven’t gotten the album yet either, but plan on getting it sooner or later. thanks for the reviews everyone.

I received a text in the small hours of Sunday morning from Catgoat informing me that Paul Barker is tall.

hes got a good 2-3 inches on me so hes at least 6’5"

barker is actually 4’ 11".
worked with him many times.had to shove his skinnyness ,tinyness out of the way.felt like i was violating a federal law of some kind trying to get that midget out of the way.
it’s the talent that elevates him to above 6’.
yeah.
run ,run to the show.if you don’t go, you won’t know.

Will he come to the UK?

It’s in the works. Should be early '08.

Bisquitodoom filmed a couple of the first few shows. That’s about all I know of, so far. Gonna be a hard thing to get recordings of, I imagine, but hopefully they’ll be more encouraged to tape.

Its too bad cause the live sound is great! We asked the guys after the set if they would release a live cd and tld them how much better it was live. They seemed to agree, said the sound really came together when they play shows.

Hopefully enough people will show interest in a live release from these guys so that we can get one.

I’m going to see them at Knitting Factory in Hollywood tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing a great show. Hopefully there’s a good turnout.

goddammit. i was going to the knitting factory tonight and now can’t because of work.
mike patton, richard patrick and other luminaries of sorts will be there.tons of musicians and film people.
crap.
wait for the report, i guess.

I think I’d call in sick.

can’t do that when you’re on an airplane.
oh well.

Anybody else here catch the Knitting Factory show last night? They sounded very tight live, vocals sounded quite a bit better than on the album too. With that said though, I hate to be a downer but I still can’t seem to get into USSA. I really want to, I like both Duane and Paul and think they’re very talented, but something about USSA doesn’t move me. Unfortunately they didn’t go on till after 12 and the place had cleared out a bit by the time they finally took the stage. Still they put on a very good show, sadly no encore though so we didn’t get to hear Butterfly Potion which was a bummer. I think I spotted Patton in the audience freaking out to Oxbow but I could be wrong…

Caught U.S.S.A. in Seattle last night. They put on a great performance and had a solid live sound.

Only problem was, that they started a little late and there was probably under forty people that showed up, which made it a little harder to work up that crowd energy. The band seemed aware of this and seemed just a tad frustrated by it, but the still managed to pull off an impressive set. It was too bad because I think a lot of people here would have liked the band but are probably not aware of him.

I think it’s cool though how Barker and Denison aren’t resting on their laurels either, they built the brand from scratch. I actually liked Gary Call as a singer, I thought his vocals worked well for the project, and he seemed to lack the typical arrogant, egotistical lead singer self-importance that is celebrated too much in our society.

I talked Gary outside, seemed like a decent guy. Said Hello to Paul who seemed like a great guy as well. His mannerisms and demeanor were such the polar opposite of Jourgensen’s it’s a wonder to me their partnership lasted as long as it did.

I wonder how well they will do, their music seems perhaps a bit too intellectual to have any hugely commercial success, but perhaps they can become a good cult band like fantomas or tomahawk and at least make enough to pay the bills.

I’ll be keeping an eye on these guys…

I finally got around to giving ‘the spoils’ a proper listen. I was NOT impressed by the fuzz page tracks. And it’s also sorta weird for me, since I liked the Jesus Lizard (have the disco…) and I loved the Lead Into Gold releases - Pink Anvil was enjoyable, but not so many repeat listens.

So attempting to clean the slate - I put this in today and listened. Certain lyrics make me a cringe a little especially when combined with the penchant for a Trent Reznor early years whine. Outside of those (admittedly few) moments, this disc was worth the purchase. It’s gonna be a grower for me I think - just a couple listens and I’m already warming up to a handful of songs.

I hope they make a second release - a little more restraint on the singers part and a couple less cliched lines and this would have been a truly excellent release.

Looking forward to the live show - I think the ‘removal’ of certain overdubbed vocals (and increased guitar/bass crushings) will benefit this material a lot.

As is: 7/10
