Knowledge Base for Unreleased Tracks

Over the past handful of years, I’ve been taking notes and assembling somewhat of a master list of all the unreleased material that’s out there. Things that I’ve seen mentioned here, read/heard from various band members/interviews, or came across on bootlegs/youtube. There’s definitely areas that I could really use some help with, and hopefully we can collectively assemble a solid list. I’m hoping this thread can become a sticky thread for collectors and enthusiasts to easily refer to. Who knows, maybe someone reading this will have some old tapes that can be shared.

Here’s a list of all known unreleased tracks, sorted by year:

With the release of Industrial Accident and the new 1982 CD (and some new tidbits that have come to light) I figured it’s time to update the unreleased list. Below are the edits/additions to the list:

-Removed Funkamental, Dancing Alone, Le Stupide and Knowledge, as those have been officially released on Chicago/Detroit 1982.

-Hardman has surfaced on YouTube, so I changed it’s status.

-Added three 1984 performances that have been documented by the band…Industrial Accident includes a live cut of Everyday Is Halloween, that confirms an excellent audio recording exists for The Exit show. That means there should be higher quality versions of Hizbollah, Do You Even Like It & Ricky’s Hand. The other is footage shot by the band’s crew at The Channel in Boston & The Living Room in Providence, and some of that footage has appeared in the documentary and YouTube.

-Added a new song to the 1984 section. “Hopeless Days” which appears in the Industrial Accident film, but not on the soundtrack.

-Added two new songs to the 1988 section. “Ingrate” and “I’m Sick” which appear on a hand written track list for an early version of LORAH (which had “Stigmata” as the working title) by the band. This early version has been added to the 1988 section as well.

-Removed “I See Red (Instrumental)” as it appears to be the music bed for “My Favorite Things”, which is the same as the released version, minus the vocals and guitars.

-Removed “Here They Come” and “Paisley (Alternate)” from the 1994 Bridge School Performance. High quality versions have been officially released via iTunes.

-Removed “Shove In My Head (Demo)” as it’s been confirmed as a fan made bootleg.

-Updated the information for the 2001 A.I. cuts. They seem to be instrumentals of later released songs, but since I haven’t heard them in full, I’m not ruling them out just yet.

-Updated the 1986 Box Set info.

Could you please tell us more about that hand written tracklist for Lorah/Stigmata please? Did Al or Paul mention it in some recent interview or there’s an actual photo of it?

Also there’s a picture on discogs in which Paul says that Al didn’t participate in that 1986 box set recording. Dunno if it’s real

Notice that Rieflin is listed as a Ministry member, not as an additional musician.

I wonder if Bill’s status change influenced the tracklist changes.

Sorry to necro this, but I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what “Ingrate” and “I’m Sick” might have been. I have to wonder if they found their way on to the official release of LORAH, since otherwise the official release would only include 2 songs off that entire tracklist (“Stigmata” and “Abortive”), one of which was recorded for Twitch (“Abortive”).

Thematically, “The Missing” could be “Ingrate” and “Flashback” could be “I’m Sick.” “Better Ways” also has the lyric “You can laugh until you’re sick.”

But given how completely “Self Annoyed” was transformed into “Destruction,” I wouldn’t bet on that.

Speaking of which, one of them could be “Self Annoyed”/“Destruction” by a different name, though both “Ingrate” and “I’m Sick” are listed as Jourgensen only, while “Destruction” is Jourgensen/Barker. That might also rule out “Tonight We Murder” and “Hatred” as possible candidates.

Pure speculation, but I also wonder if the “Stigmata” listed here is actually a completely different track than the one released. The reasons this comes to mind: 1) Jourgensen said he recorded Stigmata late in the process, but he was telling people the name of hte new album was “Stigmata” as early as 1987. 2) “Stigmata” really doesn’t fit well with the other known tracks on the Wax Trax list. (Of course Jourgensen’s memory is known to be unreliable, so “Stigmata” could have been written and recorded earlier. And it’s also possible that the track list does date to a period fairly late in the process, indicating a pretty massive shake-up relatively late in the game. Also, if “Ingrate” and “I’m Sick” are “The Missing” and “Flashback,” then “Stigmata” would fit pretty well with those tracks. So I could very very well be waaaaay off base for even thinking that there could ever have been another song called “Stigmata”).

No problem whatsoever, it’s actually been a while since I’ve looked at this list, so this is probably a good time to update it.

For “Ingrate” and “I’m Sick” it’s anyone’s guess.

Some songs had working titles and were later renamed. For example, the master tape for “Flashback” is actually listed as “Better off Dead”

Other tracks were stripped and rebuilt into different songs. Some dating back as far as 1984. Here’s what I’ve been able to piece together:

A version of “Hizbollah” was played as the opening song on the 1984 tour, and may have had a working title of “Oceanside Away”. “Do You Even Like It” was another one from that tour, and the drums & bassline from that one formed the basis for “Tonight We Murder”

The music from the 1986 song “Thrill Kill Kult” was reused in “Hatred” and the bassline was used for “The Idiot” And of course along with “Blackened Heard” made up the first Lead Into Gold 12".

“Eyes of Christ” became “Apathy”. “Better Ways” was from the same recording sessions, and oddly so was “Cause We’re In Love Again”.

As you mentioned “Self Annoyed” became “Destruction” although to me the latter sounded more like a dub remix of the former.

That early tracklist also lists “Show More Spine” with a vocal credit for Al, so that version may exist. Of course it without a doubt became “Show Me Your Spine” with Ogre on vocals.

If you haven’t checked them out yet, there’s a couple of interviews with Al on Youtube that REVOLVER put out for the 30th anniversary for the Land of Rape and Honey.

Al goes over the material, and states that they bulk recorded a ton of material at once. It’s entirely possible that Stigmata was recorded late in the sessions, but just happened to make the first incarnation of the tracklist. My guess is “The Missing” and “Deity” were the final songs recorded, since they’re the only two tracks with real guitar, and they simply revised the tracklist to feature this new direction.

Thanks for compiling all of that in one place, it’s pretty handy!

I would like to see the rest of the live recording of the 1984 Exit show released. Does Wax Trax (Julia) have possession of the full show, or did Al just provide the one track for the film soundtrack?

Same goes for the HQ video recordings of the 1984 Boston and Providence shows. I wonder what is preventing the rest of those shows from being released - either on YouTube or perhaps on Bandcamp.

Same here, would love to hear/see the rest of the live 1984 stuff.

I’m pretty sure the Exit track on the soundtrack came from Wax Trax. They have their own stash of material including interviews and various live videos, that I really hope sees the light of day.

I’ve reached out a couple of times regarding the Boston and Providence shows, and was only told that the rest would come out after the Wax Trax documentary was released. It’s been a few years now. Either he forgot, or something else is coming down through the pipeline.

Wax Trax announced they’re working on a new film as of September, but no clue if that’s a factor or not.
