i was gonna wait to buy it at the show, but it hit me that it will most likely cost more there.
but yeah, so i gave it a spin, and i really have no idea why people hate this so much. i mean, i dont liek that it is so short, but it is a fucking nice slab of music.
the covers are faithful, but never lifted, and i think they hold a lot of the coolness of the originals as well.
i like it, and im fucking in love withthe cover of under my thumb, and radar love.
It just sounds like a mess to me. The fact that the covers are so faithful is part of the problem. To my mind they’d be better if they were completely dicked around with - only the second version of “What A Wonderful World” does this. Also, it’s essentially a comedy/novelty album - much like “Cocked And Loaded” in that respect. And those kind of records don’t usually stand the test of time.
Here’s what I liked:
Josh’s vocals on his two songs
That Al’s version of “What A Wonderful World” is actually more intelligible than Louis Armstrong’s. Do you know for most of my life I thought the line “dark sacred night” was actually “dog’s say goodnight”? I thought it was one of music’s strangest lyrics, but “Cover Up” has set me straight. Thanks, Al!

see, i think it is faithful enough for you to get thr real warm rock feel of the originals, but it is tweaked, heavy, and what have you enough to be worth it.
and yeah it is a novelty thing, but honestly what cover album isnt?
is there someone out there who is gong to tell me that they expected a COVERS album by ministry to be a serious deal?
It’s not even a matter of expectations for me. I hate most of the original songs to begin with. “Under My Thumb”, an exception, is one of my favorite Stones tunes, but I just don’t like MiniCoC’s version. I prefer when Al covers bands like Magazine, Fad Gadget, and Skinny Puppy, not Golden Earring, Ram Jam, and ZZ Top (I do like Blue Jean Blues, but that’s about it). I definitely don’t take this album seriously by any stretch. They’re not much better performed live, either.
Here’s my take:
it’s uninspired, unimaginative, bland, boring, they are crappy, overplayed, well known songs to begin with. Who knew anyone could make Under My Thumb WORSE than it already was? (Sorry tenohtwo IMO stones have 3 good songs paint it black, wild horses, and Dead flowers-in that order)
Hacksaw-
Listen to Bob dylan’s original Lay lady lay, then listen to Ministry’s. It’s not just that the music is “heavier”, it’s that they brought something “new” to the song, “tweaked it” (to borrow a phrase) and added something, brought an alternate view of the song, changed the arrangement, something. (in lay lady lay’s case they added a complimentary yet simple thundering bassline, synth melodies buried in the back of the mix)
Still the same Song but new meaning Dylans has you thinking of two people in love running through fields and blotting out the rest of the world for each. Ministry’s version has me thinking of xome guy that works longer than he has to at some blue collar (steal/saw Mill) type job who works himself to death(long hours) because it makes him happy to give everything to his wife which kinda makes her happy but all she really wants is to be with him and have him home more (alright enough silly waxing philosophy.) both love songs but both with their own “scenery” around it
It would seem all Al did for cover up was tune down the guitars and sing through his distorter not. very creative. He created no new complimetnary riffs no new creative bass lines nothing. really, all he brought to the songs was that voice distorter. Really just kinda weak! best part of the Cd is the art work but even that still sucks cause it’s a Digi. Guess I’ll have to wait for TKO records to release it!!
Late,

Its kind of fun, but they have had more interesting cover songs. Metallica with Garage Days brought a whole new sound and some (at the time) obscure bands. Ministry used to, but this is largely not that great. For some reason I am enjoying it more than I should.
I like Just Got Paid, but hell is it distorted and a little too heavy.
to quote rev… “its a mess”. i didn’t find anything worth anything for me. the only thing close… was the under my thumb. they allllmost go there but then lost it.
Cover Up sucks except for Lay Lady Lay and Supernaut, and they’re far from new. I like Mountain but knew before I even heard it that Mississippi Queen would sound bad played by Ministry.
Come to think of it I can’t think of too many other bands that release multiple albums with songs that are on other albums already.
Another problem I’ve got with this is that the whole “just like the original - BUT LOUDER!” thing is played out. Marilyn Manson does it to an '80s song every time he needs a few quick bucks. Orgy did it to New Order. Alien Ant Farm and Chris Cornell did it to Michael Jackson. Some douchebag band I don’t remember the name of did it to Genesis. It’s easy and it’s old.
Imagine if you will, Ministry covering “Mississippi Queen”. But instead of doing it louder and faster, they slowed it WAY down, so it sounds like an outtake from Filth Pig. Imagine “Bang A Gong” with the same vocals as on Cover Up, but a minimal, nearly guitar-free instrumentation. Imagine “Radar Love” remixed so that the chorus doesn’t just sound like a wall of white noise.
They should’ve let me produce this record, dammit.
artistically pointless, no more no less. not even worth disliking. it is best to be ignored.
dirty projectors - rise above
that’s how one reinterpretes songs. at first I thought, wow, never before has a band done so much DAMAGE to a fellow artists’s work. but then, this shit keeps on being fascinating. something mr. jourgensen hasn’t achieved in 1.5 decades, cover songs or not.

Yeah slow is the way to go…i’ve ALWAYS wanted the Melvins to cover “Rhinestone Cowboy” but in a slow punishing “Hag Me” type of speed…that would be DEVASTATING!!![cool]
