Oh, wait, there’s actually one more thing I remember about the film. There’s a part where they are starting to do “Helter Skelter” and Bono says, “This is a song Charles Manson stole from the Beatles and we’re stealing it back!”
Again, the crowd went wild. And it was all the buzz as the crowd exited and went to their cars. They were all reciting the line because their saviour Bono was so edgy and brave.
My roommate had the Rattle and Hum movie. I liked it and watched it several times. I thought U2 was pretty good up through then. I couldn’t take it after Bobo went to his weird sunglasses phase and they put out crap like “Discotheque”, though.
I’ve only ever liked two songs by U2. And by “liked” I mean, liked enough not to frantically change the channel on the radio . . . . “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “New Years Day”.

The only song I ever remotely liked by them was ‘Bullet the Blue Sky’…
I begrudgingly admit to liking a number of (very) early tracks of theirs and a number of tracks on Achtung Baby. In fact, if push comes to shove, Achtung Baby is a pretty darn great album. But I don’t know how much of that album is Eno and how much is U2.
Interestingly, during recording of the album, U2 were listening heavily to “industrial” music like The Young Gods (L’Eau Rouge) and Neubauten (Haus Der Luge).
I’m going to have to play the Devil’s Advocate here and state that I really enjoy most of U2’s pre - Everything You Can’t Leave Behind catalogue (that’s where they lost me BIG time). Agreed on the Achtung baby comment - it’s a fantastic album with Zooropa coming a CLOSE second.
That having said I really don’t care much for the individuals in the band. And I haven’t heard the new album and don’t care to. I haven’t bought a U2 album (apart from the Achtung Baby collector’s box set) in well over 12 years. Even the lure of a free one doesn’t inspire me to check it out.
Zooropa’s the only U2 album I need. Great production by Flood, and Johnny Cash is on it. Rick Rubin gets all the credit for reviving his career, but that song put Cash back on the radar before American Recordings ever came out. So I have to give U2 credit for that.
A couple of their early songs are OK too. Other than that, fuck 'em.

Yeah, pretty extreme stuff.
Hahaha, “stealing it back,” what does that even mean? First off, Siouxsie and the Banshees had it in their repertoire before U2, so technically Bono would have to steal it from THEM (I’d put my money on Siouxsie to win in a fight)…and did Manson ever actually record the song? I mean, he thought that the Beatles were speaking to him via the White Album, yes, but he only “stole” / appropriated a vague concept if anything.
That aside, this has to be one of my favorite pieces of documented “huh? What?” stage banter aside from David Lee Roth being stewed to the gills at Van Halen’s “US Festival” performance…he downs a fifth or so of whiskey on stage, and then reminds the audience that “the only people who drink ICED TEA from WHISKEY bottles are the CLAAASH, BABAAAYYY!”

i dunno if he did, but there’s a sample of him saying/singing the lyrics of helter skelter in skinny puppy’s “worlock”
The Helter Skelter comment sounds sarcastic, and I concur that Siouxie would win. Also, most people I talk to about U2 have nothing but praise for Achtung Baby. KMFDM certainly loves that album too.

It’s an excellent album. Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop were great, i loved all the stuff before that too, but the stuff after has ranged from very dull to absolute shite. They just don’t care at all whatsoever.
I don’t have anything apple but my wife has it…I’ll give it a listen or two. Pop was the last I’ve listen to them but I really dig there older stuff. 81/82/86!
