TV shows are mixing it up lately

I’ve been watching some series on Netflix. They all pretty much suck but all of them have gone the extra mile to include a lot of black/white couples and lesbianism. So far no gay guys that I remember. The odd thing is that is so in your face that it seems like television is trying to promote interacialism and lesbianism. It doesn’t bother me but it is so out of place and occurs so much that it seems odd. Has anyone noticed that? Just curious. I’ll hold off on mentioning the shows that I have noticed it in until others can comment.

I don’t think that they’re necessarily “promoting” it As much as they’re just trying to include/represent all of the marketable demographics. There’s money to be made and unless you’re hitting every marketable demographic then you’re missing a valuable revenue stream.

I don’t know. My wife watches the Bravo network nonstop so I now feel like I’m the freak for not having an abundance of outrageously flamboyant homosexuals in my social circle. And I AM an interracial couple, so I’m kind of numbed to that too.

I basically agree with this point. I’m not one of those types who thinks that ‘race mixing’ and non-hetero sexualities are being slammed into everyone’s faces as a deliberate attempt to weaken the W.A.S.P. culture, or any other culture for that matter.

That said, I don’t think people - particularly TV advertisers - really portray ethno-cultural diversity as part of some purely altruistic and progressive agenda. As Grmpy suggests, more different constituencies being represented simply equals more $$$.

The problem I have is that the kind of thing appearing in TV commercials or dumb reality shows is not really true diversity or multi-culturalism. Rather it’s a kind of mono-culture in which people may look different but all dance to the same beat, eat the same food, and apparently all THINK the same. Everyone’s goals and desires are shown as being oriented towards simply buying lots of useless shit, so…it’s only ‘diversity’ in a superficial way, and otherwise is conformity and erosion of real difference.

Spinning off of Gunnar’s comment - I do find it puzzling, if making money is the end goal here, that the most statistically common racial pairing (East Asian women with Caucasian males) rarely gets any play on TV. I saw a commercial on Canadian TV a little while ago with such a couple going to a jeweler or something like this, and it’s maybe the only such one that I’ve seen in years.

My wife’s last boss is a white guy in his late 40’s or early 50’s I think. He is gay, and is the straight-laced (but quite fussy and uppity) serious “manly” one, but his boyfriend is this funny younger Filipino guy, way more flamboyant and “the party kid”. I always thought it was funny when we’d meet up because I would end up clowning around and boozing up and cracking jokes with the fruity Asian while my wife and the anal retentive honkey would be rolling their eyes at us.

Never heard of any of them

HAHAHAHA!!! These are actual shows or ideas for “Prongs Movie Suggestions”.

These sound amazingly retarded.
I need to watch more TV.

Man, those sound terrible.

It’s true: Those are all real shows.

I imagine this thread has just about run its course so here is the list of shows I had been watching:

The 4400
Arrow
Jericho
Revolution

The are all similarly stupid.

Arrow’s very very stupid, but fun. It gets better as it goes along. I watched the first 2 episodes of Agent Carter last night, it’s ok, she’s really hot. Also watching Brooklyn Nine Nine (hilarious), Constantine, The Flash and a couple of others.

Did you just roll out of a 4 decade coma?
