BTW this has probably been posted before… but what do you guys think of Year Zero? I listened to it today for the first time, straight through and it is fricken awesome…
The digital sound and experimentation on ‘Year Zero’ was really refreshing after ‘With Teeth’ being so organic and rock-oriented, but I think it went a bit overboard and sacrificed on the song writing end.
The distorted beat “solo” thing at the end of “The Great Destroyer” just screams “I’m still relevant!” and is utterly annoying.
I think ‘The Slip’ is a nice blend of ‘With Teeth’ and ‘Year Zero’. I like all three post-Fragile albums (haven’t gotten around to ‘Ghosts’ yet) and I do agree that the concept and marketing for ‘Year Zero’ was really cool along with the new lyrical focus not being on his whining solipsistic bullshit.

That one really grew on me. At first I kind of dismissed it as a lot of half-baked ideas (which it probably still is on a fundamental level), but now I find it great music to relax to. If I ever get a blu-ray player I look forward to watching it as well as listening.
Say what you will about year zero, but at least lyrically, trent finally moved past the “me” focus in his writing. There’s only so many songs you can write about yourself and from the point of view of a “yourself”. Year zero he took a chance as a storyteller.
I mean a good example is song writers like les claypool and tom waits. They write songs, but the songs are stories more or less about characters and events.
as far as finishing yeear zero, this may be where trent and bowie share another common trait (bowie had outside and never finsihed the storyline)
I suspect Year Zero part two will be the TV show.
I watched an actually decent interview the other day with Trent where he said that it is in the talking stages right now for a HBO series, if that falls through it might end up being a graphic novel or something. He said it won’t be about NIN though, or at least only peripherally as he would serve as executive producer.

Well HBO greenlit the series about anthony kiedis based on his autobio… it’s supposed to be about when he was a kid and went to live in LA with his dad. Should be interesting
