Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross score David Fincher's new film

Not sure what to think of this. Guess I’ll have to wait and see.

sounds like a random thing to be scoring…a movie about a social network site? i’m surprised they didn’t ask lady gaga or some bullshit [:P]

I came in here to post this.
I’ve got faith that Fincher and Reznor will at least produce something interesting out of such an unlikely topic.

Here’s a good link:

As the NIN Hotline points out, today, the Nine Inch Nails website’s news feed featured a message from Trent Reznor announcing that he and longtime collaborator Atticus Ross have written the score for David Fincher’s new film The Social Network, which is about the founding of Facebook. It stars Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, and Justin Timberlake.

Reznor writes, “I’ve always loved David’s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned.” He also mentions that he and Ross are currently in the process of “distilling the large amount of music we’ve written for this down to a satisfying record (or two).” He adds, “The film opens October 1 in the U.S. with the record likely available a couple of weeks ahead of that.”

Reznor calls the film “really fucking good. And dark!” I gotta admit, I’m extremely curious to see how Fincher turns the story of a bunch of nerds sitting at computers into something that Trent Reznor considers “dark.”

Shit damn motherfucker, this sounds like Trent going back to “Quake Soundtrack” style material, fucking awesome!!!

I’m way more interested in the soundtrack than the film.
Wonder when the full thing will be available.

My ears got an erection when I listened.

This is exactly the stuff Trent should be doing.

What a sensible, hot-wife-getting, prick

Love it, definitely sounds a bit like his work on Quake, I hear some of the instrumental elements of The Fragile in there too. Looking forward to this.

Meh. Expected more since everyone’s raving about it. That stuttering pan effect was really annoying after a minute on headphones.

Could see it being cool in a theater though for sure.

pretty cool…does sound like a quake thing.

Five tracks are available for free now. The full album comes out in three weeks.

On first listen, it simply sounds like more generic forgettable Reznor instrumentals from the Ghosts/HTDA era. I don’t know why everyone is so excited about this.

Who’s getting excited? I don’t think there’s been as much fanfare over this as other recent projects. Haven’t really closely followed the NIN camp for a few months.

Liking these five. There’s similarities to Ghosts in that it’s instrumental and I think that’s where it ends. They seem fuller bodied and hit more of a nerve than almost anything from that collection. Ghosts was sometimes jarring in its diversity of sound and this so far fits the “music for daydreams” description that Reznor used better because it has more of an emotional underlining.

Can’t really say I’m looking forward to the movie, however.

I agree that it has that sort of Quake-ish atmosphere. Personally, the Quake soundtrack is the only work of Reznor’s I’ve been listening to lately. His other albums have been wearing off on me over the years.

Ghosts has it’s moments, but there are a few too many tracks that didn’t belong there. Mostly the tracks with the slow paced acoustic drumming with the irritating synth noise. They always tend to get on my nerves.

This sampler as a whole sounds more focused, more well-rounded. I can’t say I’m drooling over it, but it ain’t bad either. I always thought Trent was better off composing instrumentals for films and games. Would be nice if he keeps it up.

Fucking love this, sounds like a mix between NIN and Harmonia (my favorite Krautrock band). If the whole album holds up, this is going to be the one to beat for album of the year in my book.

Anybody else here digging this soundtrack? I’ve had it on repeat for a while now, really great stuff. Works really well as an album on it’s own even without the movie. I wasn’t much of a fan of Ghosts but this seems a lot more focused. The cover of “Hall of the Mountain King” is pretty brilliant too.

I like it. It’s like a more focused version of what Ghost was. And has some 8-bit sounding moments too (a plus). Probably going check the movie out tomorrow night.

Well, a score has to be more focused by necessity.
They couldn’t just release every little twiddle they recorded like they did with Ghosts.

Well yeah of course. I was just saying it SOUNDED like a more focused Ghosts. Which it pretty much is. Ghosts was purely experimental from start to finish.
