My prediction for Big O.
Can’t say I disagree.
What’s that? Electoral votes?
How many total are there again? 528 seems to ring a bell for some reason.
Anyway, I think it’s really idiotic and very ANTI-Democratic that they start releasing results and “calling states” before the polls have even closed.
I complain about this every year and I honestly don’t know why no one makes an issue out of it (other than the fact that media and politics are both firmly planted up each others’ butts).
Nate silver has O at 313 but it already looks like his projection for virginia is wrong so wo fucking knows.
With all the dirty shit the republicans are doing to suppress votes I can’t. Believe they haven’t called it for romney.

If all the electoral votes have come in, it can be called.
Only the popular vote (or the other items on the ballot) requires all the other peoples votes to be counted.
If all the electoral votes have come in, it can be called.
Yeah, I guess I’m still at a loss, and I have NEVER fully understood this bullcrap about the electoral college. Yes, as a concept, I understand, but it’s a lot easier to think of the states as worth “points” (1 point for each electoral vote – win the state, win the points).
But, as there are supposedly actual “ELECTORS” that cast these votes accordingly, based on the results of the popular outcome in their state, why would they be casting their votes before all the votes are counted?
And where are these people anyway? Are they all in some big room, waiting nervously with a cell phone for the state governor to call them and say, “Vote Romney” or whatever?
In my 21 years of voting and 39 years as an American I have never once in my entire life seen an ELECTOR, read an interview with an elector, read any names of published electors . . . NOTHING!!!
So seriously, what the heck is up with all this bullcrap anyway?
Electors are comprised of people assigned by the party (Democratic party may pick an influential and loyal campaign worker or contributor). They can be anyone but Senators or Congress people. They are supposed to vote for the party that selected them, but they are not obligated to do so. We will never know who was a member of the electoral college because it could place their life in danger.

In Washington?
for the sake of ease we’ll use little numbers and only a few states…
lets say ohio’s population is 10
and california’s population is 100
and AZ pop is 10
and oregon’s pop is 10
and nj pop is 10
lets say they all vote Romney except ca and NJ
that means 110 people voted for O and 30 people voted for romney.
it’s not fair to give it to romney because more states voted for romney because way more people voted for O.
that in a nutshell is the electoral college

Yeah, I got that.
Like I said, I understand how the totals work and I understand how it’s different than the popular vote.
It’s the system we have and as kooky as it may be, I’m okay with that.
I just want to know the tangibles . . . . everyone talks about these “electors”, but where are they? Where do they make their votes? How? Are their votes anonymous or if someone breaks rank will it be known who it was?
Everyone claims to know about the electoral college and that really only means that they know it either conceptually or up to the level that people like you or I or Mooney understand it . . . . . BUT THE WHOLE DAMN THING IS SHROUDED IN FRIGGIN’ MYSTERY!!!
Also, if it is just a simplified numbers game, why even have ELECTORS? I always think of it as “points” so why don’t they just do it that way?
Yeah, all righty then, you got CA, TX, etc etc. . . . add 'em up. It’s virtually what they do anyway. Is there any rationale whatsoever for having these “ELECTORS”?
It seems to me they are completely pointless and no one has ever been able to demonstrate otherwise.
Those details, I cannot comment on with any degree of certainty. Would have to become closely involved with the campaign and then be selected as an electoral voter to know for certain. However, I would think that they would be separated from each other; otherwise, they would put each others lives in danger. I’m guessing their names/addressees are flagged in some way in the regular voting system. When their ballot goes through, it is counted as the electoral vote.
msnbc is calling wisconsin for Obama even though romney has 51% and obama 48%… WTF?

I really don’t get the point of the electoral college, personally. I think it’s kind of antiquated. Plus, don’t forget, it had a hand in creating problems in the 2000 election.
Remember that one?

Big O
Are they counting electoral votes or popular votes?
They do not have to be the same.
I called O for Electoral win and R for popular win because usually more GOP vote than DFL.

O won both and the majority of the states.

Pretty sure they cast their vote from the floor of their state’s senate.
Probably a vocal vote.
yes they are in their states now
here is how the voters are picked. From archives.gov
Who selects the Electors?
The process for selecting Electors varies throughout the United States. Generally, the political parties nominate Electors at their State party conventions or by a vote of the party’s central committee in each State. Each candidate will have their own unique slate of potential Electors as a result of this part of the selection process.
Electors are often chosen to recognize service and dedication to their political party. They may be State-elected officials, party leaders, or persons who have a personal or political affiliation with the Presidential candidate.
On Election Day, the voters in each State choose the Electors by casting votes for the presidential candidate of their choice. The Electors’ names may or may not appear on the ballot below the name of the candidates running for President, depending on the procedure in each State. The winning candidate in each State—except in Nebraska and Maine, which have proportional distribution of the Electors—is awarded all of the State’s Electors. In Nebraska and Maine, the state winner receives two Electors and the winner of each congressional district receives one Elector. This system permits the Electors from Nebraska and Maine to be awarded to more than one candidate.

Right, and with all the posturing that one must do to maintain a good image and be truthful with what policies one personally believes to be the law of the land…why pander to swing states to put you over the top? Cali, Ohio and Florida does NOT equal the rest of the States.
Doesn’t the line “every vote counts, so get out and vote” hold more weight when you actually know it will? I live in New York. Guess who didn’t vote last night? Because the whole state’s a drop in the fucking bucket for electoral voting. It hasn’t been red since Reagan, and since Romney basically came out against FEMA…well…the timing couldn’t have been shittier.
