2010

Supposedly the Swans might be re-aligning and putting out new material in 2010…

I don’t mind what he’s doing Puscifer as a comedic/cabaret act, but that album was fucking bollocks. A clever way to test the patience of the acolytes and devotees.

I believe it is a ‘joke’…but the odds of Maynard actually coming out and admitting that…

I don’t ‘get’ Puscifer either as a a joke or as a totally straight and serious musical statement. I’d liken it to Peeping Tom, although that project seems more of a labour of love whereas Puscifer seems rather trivial and rushed in comparison. And the lyrics are terrible whether intentional or not.

I agree with skarekroe… they’re the sort of guys to jam fuckloads, record it and dissect it and find the ‘buried treasure’, then write a fuckload of charts, etc etc…

The act of putting together a Tool album would be daunting to say the least. Which is probably why they attempt it so infrequently. A matter of sifting through hundreds of hours of recorded music and splicing the quality material together and then figuring out what kind of a statement each track is going to attempt to convey.

I don’t envy them in the slightest.

I’d also agree that Maynard most most likely comes into the equation during the actual recording process…writing lyrics on the spot and so forth. I doubt he has much to do with the actual demo process.

Still a shame that they can’t release SOMETHING now and then to keep the fans happy. All this ‘secrecy’ bit is rather annoying at times. Something tells me I’m still going to be none the wiser on a new album six months from now. Thankful I’ve probably got a dozen or so new Merzbow releases to keep me occupied in the meantime.

Where’s that live dvd for instance? They’ve been promising one for years.

I’m pretty sure they just work without him. Especially if he’s out doing apc or puscifer.

Same goes for Boris, who are criminally ignored on this site.

Though they are pretty ignored on this site I actually think they’re overrated. Too much stoned wanking around and not enough good song writing, shitty production, lack of solid vocals. The CD with Merzbow was interesting but the male vocals yelling stupid shit just became obnoxious at points.

It reminded me of some cheesy Japanese tourist in Times Square

RE: live Tool DVD… wasn’t it originally going to be of the Lateralus tour? Then the 10K days Tour… now… who knows… I still think the reason there is no pro-shot footage of them is Maynard saw that one video from Reading Festival and went
“Jesus… is that me stomping around looking like a nut… NO MORE RECORDINGS!”

But I dont see what the problem with recent shows could be, he hides in the back anyway.

Actually I have read some interview where they believe that if they released a DVD then they would lose their Mystique and no-one would come and see the shows etc. etc… which is a crock… their Aus shows sold out in under 1/2 hour and there were tickets on ebay for 3x the asking price BEFORE that first half hour was already over. Fucking scalpers. Lucky ticketmaster website stuffed up and my friend got 12 tix instead of 6, so I scored two of the extras, woot.

Type O’s due for a new one? Cool. I actually enjoyed “Dead Again,” given the return to the Carnivore-era sound, even though it’s probably the worst Christian rock album ever.

[tongue]

Looking forward to Cut Hands. Definitely. New RevCo and Stayte’ll be worth the wait, too.

Aside from that, I’ve still got a lot of catching up to do. Missed a lot of stuff last year. STILL haven’t listened to “Devil in My Details” or whatever.

Totally agree with all of that. I only had to listen to a couple of Puscifer songs to wonder why he bothered, and the got remixes for it? Fun for him, I spose. I love how dickhead tool fans at my uni were saying, ‘OH GOD, I CAN’T WAIT FOR IT, CAN’T WAIT!’ and then were totally let down.

The problem with Merzbow is a lot of it gets similar after a while. I’d rather have 5 distinctly different albums over 20 years than 20 similar sounding albums in 5 years. Merzbow is good at what he does, but I prefer him when he is in collaborative mode. His noise tends to augment other people’s music nicely.

I really like boris’ music, but the vocals just ruin it for me. When Wata, the guitarist sings in the more mellow stuff, it works really well, yet she’s criminally underused.

I prefer Boris more in ‘mellow’ mode. A lot of their heavier-hardrock sort of stuff is fun, but doesn’t hit me like a tonne of bricks in the way the mellow-shoegazer stuff does.

I love Puscifer… yeah some of it’s a bit silly, (seen the queen B video :-D) but overall it’s good. Damnit… now I have Indigo Children stuck in my head…

But of course, anyone who’s a tool fan is going to poo-poo this project… it’s not tool.

He initially stated that he was itching to do a fun, dancey kind of album - the polar opposite of what he does with Tool.

Fair enough.

So why not make a fun dancey album then? Why make turgid, depressingly bland forays into trip hop? Where’s the fun? Peeping Tom was bad but at least you can dance to it. I can’t imagine playing Puscifer at a party. Unless of course I wanted everybody to leave.

I still rather have a dozen standard sounding Merzbow albums than one Puscifer album. Or one Nine Inch Nails album for that matter. Fuck all that shit.

No, I’m happy with Merzbow’s output. I only own about twenty or so releases of his, so I don’t go crazy and buy everything he does. Haven’t had to return any Merzbow albums and ask for my money back.

I’m bidding on a few on ebay at the moment.

Peligro, what are good starting points for Merzbow? One of the local music stores has at least a couple dozen of his releases. I liked his collaborations with Boris. Still not crazy about what he brought to Flight of the Behemoth by Sunn but I’ve got an open ear to noise.

Supposedly now there is NOT going to be a TOOL album this year…and still no word on new Secret Chiefs OR new Aphex Twin.

Is it just me or is it shaping up to be a bummer of a year for new music???

Rumor is these guys are going to be doing a worldwide tour and they have expanded upon their performance art to include a variety of different thrusts and humps. We’ll be fine.

It’s just you…I’ve already picked up a heap of kick-ass records this year.

does secret chiefs 3 ever use vocals on their cds? just curious, as a big bungle fan. Isaw them live but it was all instrumental and they wore like hooded robes. only did a short set though

They used vocals on the death metal songs if memory serves right
