Top albums of 2014 why not?

What are the odds that something super excellent will come out in the next three weeks right? So here goes. Top ten, in no particular order.

Swans - To Be Kind
Marissa Nadler - July
Pink Floyd - The Endless River
St. Vincent - St. Vincent
La Roux - Trouble In Paradise
Nerd Revolt - Into The Void
Stone Breath - Children of Hum
Purson - In The Meantime
Cocksure - TVMALSV
Mastodon - Once More Round The Sun

As I researched what I bought this year, I discovered several albums that I barely remember at all. Current 93, The New Pornographers, Triptykon, Woven Hand… Lots of musical veterans are putting out stuff that just doesn’t stick in the brain…

These threads always leave me stumped as I only buy a few new albums a year . . . . so, here’s the 2014 releases that I can recall getting.

Billy Idol - Kings and Queens of the Underground
Rigor Mortis - Slaves to the Grave
AC/DC - Rock or Bust

  1. Interstellar [Soundtrack]
  2. Scaremeister: 31 Spirits
  3. Meshuggah: The Ophidian Trek
  4. Simple Shelter: The Words We Only Whisper
  5. 3TEETH: 3TEETH
  6. Godflesh: A World Lit Only By Fire
  7. Faith No More: Mother Fucker [7"]
  8. †††: †††
  9. Youth Code: A Place To Stand [EP]
  10. Cocksure: TVMALSV

Simple Shelter put out an album this year? Following Stayte on Facebook has failed me!

Yeah, I think he’s even giving it away for free on his website.

  1. †††: †††

Uhhhhh, what? Is that the name of the band?
Are the competing for douchiest attempt at uppity elite lameness? Gonna knock out Sunn O)))) and the Prince Symbol thingamajig (called a “glyph”, as I recall).

It’s a side project of Chino from the Deftones. Don’t think you’d care much for it.

The name of it is Crosses. It was ok for what Chino was going for. Really need to get that Cocksure album since I would definitely put the K.K.E.P. for one of my favorites.

Part of the reason I haven’t picked it up is because I don’t wanna support Metropolis.

Same here with Sime Shelter. It’s like those guys try to make it hard to keep up with what they release. I still haven’t been able to track down Growing Pains by Stayte, if anyone out there has it.

Haven’t heard many good ones this year to make a full list, but from what I’ve heard I actually really dig the new Pink Floyd and the new Goat albums alot.

I know he was having issues with his record company on how/when to release it. Eventually, he just decided to give it away. Most of the album can be downloaded [url http://www.simplesheltermusic.com/downloads]here.

I donated $5 for it, 'cause Josh always seemed like a swell guy to me.

  1. 3TEETH: 3TEETH

This is DEFINITELY on my list. This is one of best Industrial albums to come out in the last decade. They have a Ministry LORAH mixed with classic SP vibe to them. Basically, less is more with a very cold and sparse sound. Glad you gave them some love.

Not much else to mention that hasn’t been already stated.

Except for:

Rancid - Honor Is All We Know

It actually took them 20 years to do something worth talking about?

  1. Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 2
  2. Hail Mary Mallon - Bestiary
  3. Aphex Twin - SYRO
  4. Jenny Hval & Susanna - Meshes Of Voice
  5. Inter Arma - The Cavern
  6. Godflesh - A World Lit Only By Fire
  7. Bastard Sapling - Instinct Is Forever
  8. Swans - To Be Kind
  9. Diocletian - Gesundrian
  10. Mayhem - Esoteric Warfare

It was a good year. A top 10 was difficult to do.
