Top 5 Worst (Or Most Disappointing) Gigs

I had been wanting to do a top 10 for the best for a little while and it got done. My other idea was a top 5 for the opposite and here it is. These don’t necessarily have to be the worst you’ve ever been to either. So here it goes:

  1. Marduk 6/17/12 at the DNA Lounge in SF, CA

Kinda sad I had to kick off this list with these guys. I was originally gonna give this spot to Possessed at the same venue on 11/1/09 but that was only because of a short set as the headliner (45 minutes). Anyways, Marduk put on a good performance, but what makes this disappointing was that co-headliners 1349 blew them out of the water. Marduk had a good set, but what I found funny was that it was mostly the opening songs from each album. Met the singer after the show. Very cool guy, but I shook his hand when he got out of the bathroom and it was drenched. Guess they were out of paper towels. So yeah, they make the list for lacking what 1349 had.

  1. Mayhemfest '09 at Sleep Train Amphitheater somewhere near Sacramento, CA

This festival was just all bad except for Cannibal Corpse and Behemoth. As good as Behemoth is live, the letdown was that they only got a half hour set. I had to sit thru Bullet For My Valentine and Killswitch Engage. BFMV is one of the most repetitive bands I’ve ever seen and Killswitch just sucks. Had to even sit thru they’re shitty cover of “Holy Diver.” Marilyn Manson headlined and his set was mediocre at best and only an hour when I’ve seen him give up to 2. But if I had to single out the most disappointing band of the day it would have to be Slayer. They too only had an hour and it was pretty much a greatest hits set. The previous 2 times I saw them (ironically co-headlining with Manson) they were in support of an album and dipped into their catalog a bit. I don’t really go to Slayer to just hear the hits. But I guess that’s what they’re getting reduced to now that they’re hitting their 50’s.

  1. NIN/Jane’s Addiction NINJA tour '09 at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA

NIN was probably the bigger disappointment at this show. All because of the setlist. See for yourself:

http://www.ninwiki.com/2009/05/22_Mountain_View,_CA

Don’t get me wrong, I was happy to hear some Fragile songs I’ve never heard live before, but the rest of the setlist was too predicable. Not to mention, they had to waste time playing “Metal.” Sad from a band who was in my top 5 in the Top 10 thread. Also sad as I didn’t catch the last leg of the tour later in the year cuz they weren’t coming to the Bay Area.

Then there’s Jane’s. It was getting windy when they came on and wind at the Shoreline means shit sound. Also, Dave Navarro didn’t look like he was into it, so the lack of passion irked me. The set was cool, pretty much Nothing’s Shocking in it’s entirety, the best songs from Ritual and Whores, but NIN still played a longer set and they weren’t even the headliner.

  1. Ministry C-U-LaTour 4/2/08 at the Fillmore in SF, CA

I think we’ve talked enough about this. I almost didn’t include this cuz we’ve talked about it so damn much. But I had to be honest.

  1. Ozzfest '05 8/??/05 whatever that fucking outdoor venue is in Devore, CA (also considered San Bernadino.)

I’m sure Gunnar can sympathize with me on this one as he was there as well. The fact that this was disappointing was partly my fault cuz I ditched my friends. First good band, and 1 of 2 good bands, I saw all day was Arch Enemy. Short and sweet. I don’t really remember too many people who played, but I do remember meeting Criss Angel. His lisp is worse in person, which makes him sound super gay haha. The worst highlight of the day was seeing the hardcore dancing pit during As I Lay Dying. If only I could’ve gathered a bunch of true metalheads to take them out I would’ve.

I then met some chick who was with a big Swedish guy. We ditched them and she was giving me some attention (probably to make that Swedish guy jealous). Then Rob Zombie comes on and this chick and I are holding on to each other while everyone swarmed in. The experience of breathing in all the dust and the heat left me dehydrated. I didn’t have money for water as I had blown it all at Amoeba the previous day. I eventually mustered up the strength to hit the medical tent and I saw some people who were far worse off than I was. In fact, I was getting some dirty looks for not being injured.

I then spent the rest of the day looking for my friends. After Shadows Fall finished up their set the bonfires started. At this particular venue people gather up trash and start fires to dance around. Kinda tribal, yet stupid at the same time. Lucky me I had brought the bible from the hotel room and hopes of destroying it. I had thrown it in the pit during second stage and grabbed what was left of it. I then started ripping pages out and throwing it in the fire. Looking back, it was pretty silly. I was getting a mixed reaction from the crowd, mostly people hating on me. Finally some guy wrestled it out of my hands and I wasn’t about to fight over a bible.

Then Mudvayne came on, and flat out sucked. After them was a special (if you really wanna call it special) guest performance from Slipknot. People used to tell me how awesome Joey Jordison’s drumming is live. I wasn’t impressed. I was more entertained by watching the nazi skinheads beat each other up in the pit. But what wasn’t cool was that I got burned with a cigarette on accident.

After that crap was over, the highlight of the whole day/night was Iron Maiden. If anyone has ever heard about the show where they kept getting the power cut off on them and Bruce Dickenson getting eggs thrown at him this is the one. Bruce had been calling Black Sabbath hasbeens the whole tour. This was they’re final night of the tour and Velvet Revolver was gonna take they’re spot for the remainder. I’ll never forget the crowd when the power went out after the first verse of Number Of The Beast. It was such a shock. The power would go out a few more times, including for the end of Hallowed Be Thy Name which Bruce had the whole crowd singing. The beginning of that song was when he was getting egged. Then at the end Sharon came out and called Bruce a prick, which resulted in the whole crowd booing her.

Finally, the biggest disappointment bandwise was our headliners Black Sabbath. This is why this whole show is number 1. With the exception of Dirty Women and closing with Children Of The Grave, it was the most predictable setlist I’ve ever heard in my life. Big disappointment for someone who was once a hardcore Sabbath fan. Not to mention, Ozzy was pulling his weight with his singing. Don’t know what more I can say about this.

I’m pretty selective about the shows I go to, so I’m rarely disappointed, but here’s a couple performances that stand out as less-than-impressive . . . .

Ministry - Rio Grande Blood Tour— Hollywood (2006, I think)

Beastie Boys - (circa 1999 - whenever “Intergalactic” was relevant)

Black Sabbath - Ozzfest 2005

I can only think of three off hand…

3 - Ozzy - early 2000’s… I love Ozzy, so this is hard for me to put on here. But I saw him the tour before this one and he played for 2+ hours or something ridiculous. (Had Jason Newsted on bass), he came back on this tour and played for just over an hour. I was so disappointed. Mind you - I’ve seen him 3-4 times since and it’s always been awesome.

2 - Marilyn Manson - The tour for Eat Me Drink Me - Played with Slayer, who opened for them and blew Manson away. I was also deathly ill, so that may have had a hand it in.

1 - Heaven and Hell (not sure what year) They had Down and Megadeth open for them. They shouldn’t have. I walked out 1/4 into their set.

2 - Marilyn Manson - The tour for Eat Me Drink Me

here was your first mistake. Did you not hear the album before you went to the show?
Late,

One of my suppliers took me. He was a nice guy and he knew I liked ‘metal’ so he asked if I wanted to go. Was free food and booze, so I thought why not. Plus I love Slayer.

I didn’t think he would be that bad though. I was hoping it was just because I was really sick, but I read in the reviews the next day that it wasn’t just me.

death from above blues fest, ottawa 2011 - horrible…the crowd was dead, and the show sounded like complete and utter SHIT. plus it was mid afternoon.

nin 08/09 toronto - shitty arena venue, shitty crowd, trent didn’t seem like he wanted to be there, the songs were way too rock oriented, and his voice sounded like crap.

deftones 06 taste of chaos and 2012 heavyMTL - taste of chaos was a punk/emo tour. i only went to check out deftones, and they sucked. shitty emo crowd, sound sucked (always does with deftones), shitty setlist (both shows) and they didn’t seem like they were into it at all.

Was free food and booze…Plus I love Slayer…

This alone shoulda made it at least #10 in the best thread. But then again, that Manson album was really bad!!
Late,

Foetus off the “Sink” tour was terrible in Minneapolis.

Sleigh Bells in Costa Mesa a few years back was too packed and had massive sound issues.

Sisters of Mercy 10 years or so ago were massively dull and I wished I had just stayed at home and listened to Floodland loud instead of going.

TKK before Ministry on the Evil Doer tour was terrible too. I’ve seen them quite a few times and they used to be great.

Dead Voices on Air before Legendary Pink Dots was no good at all, which bums me out because I like DVoA. It was one guy on a laptop making sub-Download material.

The last three were all Minneapolis shows.

Can’t say I’ve been to a really bad show, but have had a few things happen:

KMFDM/CombiChrist: I was at the show in Orlando where Andy Selway slipped off the drum riser and torked his ankle right before the encore. Thankfully, I had gone to St. Pete the night before.

Have been at a few shows where the sound was off, way off, and it was crap: Ministry '08 Orlando being one.

Metallica/Jerry Cantrell: CWMP in Woodlands, TX It was about 104 deg F in the hot sun that day - hotest day of the year. Dying!

Any festival I’ve ever been too…
Rock the bells, inland invasion, street scene.

I hear you on festivals: Sunburn or thunderstorm or both! I pretty much quit going to outdoor shows.

whaaaaat! you got to see foetus and it sucked?!?! explain yourself.

I don’t do festivals either. 32 bands I don’t give a crap about and 1 or 2 that I like, both of whom get a 30 minute set if I’m lucky. Screw that. And I can do without the crappy opening bands there too.

My 21st bday present was seeing the Eat Me Drink Me tour twice (that place outside of Sacramento and the Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord 2 nights later. I personally had a great time at both. I even broke the superstition of listening to a band before you go to the show. Slayer was on it at Concord. Manson threw a water bottle right at me and I didn’t catch it. He also got a drink thrown at him during the beginning of If I Was Your Vampire and didn’t do shit about it. Guess he’s afraid of Slayer fans.

Some shit performances in no particular order

Deftones 2006 or 2007, Belfast - total shit, got in for free and had free drink for me and a friend. I had heard they were held in high esteem and was amazed to see such a boring, miserable fucking band. Hated them, really just a load of shite. I’m assuming the average Deftones fan is very sad, has a funny beard and moans about how nobody understands. They also wear workshirts and read philosophy to appear highbrow.

WASP 2008 maybe, Belfast - i went because a friend who never goes to concerts asked me to. He, of course, pulled out hours before the show, so i went anyway. Even getting totally hammered couldn’t stave off the boredom. This was the first show i ever walked out of before it ended. I didn’t know any of their songs and i just hated their show. I could have been at home watching crap on tv, but instead i wasted money on Blackie and co.

Marilyn Manson 2005 or 2006, supporting Iron Maiden, Dublin - having been a huge fan of Manson and seeing them twice on the Antichrist Superstar tour, i was pretty excited they were supporting Maiden, even though they had pretty much totally run out of steam by that point. Awful show. They played all the songs that sound exactly like each other (Fight Song and all that radio stuff), all the crappy covers they’ve ever done and Manson was bored, fat, drunk and coked out of his mind. Fucking awful and it put me off them for good.

NIN 5th July 2005, London - i remember the date because the London bombings were the day after i got home to Belfast. I saw NIN on the Downward Spiral tour, first show i’d ever been to, it was amazing. Since then i’d been a massive fan, bought all the singles and all that…this show cured me of my worship of Trent. Boring shit from start to finish. The vitality i’d loved about NIN was gone and there was just sheer tedium in it’s place. Self-important wank, and Aaron North, their guitarist, was a preening little cunt who thought he was the world’s most incredible rock star. He could not play for shit, i could have got up there and played the songs better than he did. He’s lucky i didn’t get up there and knock him the fuck out. It was crap anyway but his antics really sealed it.

Fear Factory, Belfast 2010 - Total shit. They have no songs whatsoever, just detuned guitars, heavy drums and a few fat guys onstage. I have no idea how anyone likes this band, it’s all stop-start with a load of shouting, then really fruity singing over the chorus. Again, i left before the end. Actually it as well before the end, it was after maybe 4 songs. I’d been sick anyway the previous couple of days but even if i was 100% fine i’d have left. They drained my will to live, such a shitty shitty boring fucking band.

Static X Belfast 2010, supporting Down - what can i say about Static X, except that they are not a real band and they do not have any real songs. They rely on a man’s hairstyle for a reaction. Truly pathetic, not even in a funny way. The highlight of the show was Wayne Static shouting “What do you wanna hear next?” and my mate screaming out “ANGEL OF DEATH!!!”

Honourable mention must go to American Head Charge, who were awful, possibly supporting Ministry; Raging Speedhorn, a terrible and aggressive band who demanded applause - it was not forthcoming - definitely supporting Ministry; Take a Worm for a Walk Week, supporting Ministry in Glasgow - dogshit of unbelievable proportions, they just wound the crowd up. Pretty much every bad i’ve ever seen supporting Ministry have been absolute crap.

Possibly THE WORST band i have ever seen, and some may disagree, was The Dillinger Escape Plan, supporting Mastodon, Feb 2012 in Glasgow. Jesus Christ. I have no words to describe them and how awful they were. Unmusical, posturing fuckheads with no discernable talent. They look like some football team who has been fed a drug that makes them into ultra-assholes. If they weren’t in a band they would have joined the army so they could go round the world raping and murdering innocent people, which is what they did to my innocent ears. I’ve never been so angry watching a band, they were irredeemably terrible and obviously thought they were amazing. To be fair a lot of the crowd did seem to really like their show, i fucking hated it and found myself hoping their bus would crash after they left the venue.

Well Jay it looks like you described Dillinger quite well for a guy who has no words to sat about how awful they were.

  • Grim Fairies - I think they were opening for Pigface or some other Invisible Records band. It was Curse Mackey’s girlfriend shouting over a bunch of noise.

  • Monster Magnet - opening for Rob Zombie. They played three extremely long songs, and the lead singer had a fan in front of him so his rock star hair/leather vest with no shirt rock star ensemble would blow in the wind.

  • TKK opening for Ministry - so very, very sad.

  • Nocturne - The chick later went on to be in Rock of Love with Brett Michaels. Her band sucked.

A few others on here said they sucked that tour. Since you were there I’d like to know what was so bad. I’d like to know what a bad TKK show is like since they’re number 3 on my top 10 best.

Nocturne - The chick later went on to be in Rock of Love with Brett Michaels. Her band sucked.

Ah yes, Lacy Conner. Total hottie. Bad music.

They were (I think) a trio at that point. So the sound was pretty weak. The main problem though, was that Frankie was WAY fucked up and blundered his way through the set. In early shows Al tried to get him to do guest vox on Jesus Built My Hotrod but he couldn’t hack it.

Apparently he’s gotten his act together since then, so that’s good.

Yeah, TKK was terrible in '06, Frankie was wasted, they got off to a false start with the sequencer, and had to re-start their opening song. The overall performance was just devoid of energy and flat out sloppy. They redeemed themselves at Retrospectacle. Their set was fantastic, full of nothing but their classic Wax Trax-era songs, and the performance was great.

There is a pro-shot video of Nervous Xians on the Wax Trax site that is fun to watch, brought back good memories from last year. Apparently this clip won’t be included on the final cut of the DVD:
