Zick, nice to see you’re still around.
One of my favourites this year is Nick Cave’s Push The Sky Away. Jubilee Street is one of my favourite songs ever.
It was a pretty weak year for music, so I can only do a Top 5:
I’ll just do one…one record which was the most Punk as F**K record to come out of the UK since the 70s…AND…it’s a Rap record. Well it’s lyrically and vocally delivered like a Rap record…but the music itself is the illest, freshest and punkest shit around even though it sounds like it cost £20 to make. They essentially got a bass player from some local punk band to lay down the basslines and the producer looped beats over those and the vocalist/venom spitter went to town…it is glorious and an absolute joy to behold. I personally think it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.
They go by the name Sleaford Mods and the album is called “Austerity Dogs”. They are based in Nottingham. They are totally HILARIOUS and totally BAD-ASS!!!
I would have totally missed this record had I not checked out Norman Records top albums of 2013. The Sleaford Mods record was their No.1. I buy quite a few records from Norman Records which is based down in England so I immediately snagged Austerity Dogs…upon hearing it I was BLOWN away…Punk/Rap/Hip Hop and what ever other genre you want to mention just got the biggest kick up the ass since forever!!!
I was a lucky chap as Sleaford Mods played at a horror themed nightclub here in Edinburgh this Saturday night just passed and they were absolutely glorious!!
Sleaford Mods are my new all-time favourite band ever.
Now check out the Norman Records review of why it got their No.1 for 2013 then BUY IT!!! Then after that check out one of their recent live show reviews from London below too. Then thank the music gods.

You usually like a lot of the same stuff I do. Check out my list from earlier in the thread. The bottom few especially would probably be up your alley. Kite, Bruderschaft, TRST would all do you well.
I’ve got 9…
Ghost - Infestissumam
Skinny Puppy - Weapon
GWAR - Battle Maximus
Phil Anselmo - Walk Through Exits Only
Carcass - Surgical Steel
Black Sabbath - 13
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

Worst Album Of 2013
ta da!!
Black Sabbath - 13
13 was not the worst release of the year…even if you didn’t like it, there was much worse released this year…Can you tell me what you didn’t like about it? I’ve hear a few people say they don’t like it but I never get a reason why…never…I haven’t heard one single explanation for not liking the album…I don’t give a shit if anyone likes it or not…I’m not waving the flag for 13 or anything…just curious what fans of classic Sabbath have to complain about it…still haven’t heard a single reason why…

SW…Just was listening to him.
My top 13 for 2013:
How to Destroy Angels “Welcome Oblivion” - while everyone else seemed to dig NIN “Hesitation Marks” better, I thought this was the vastly superior album. It’s like Coil remixing a pop album, very strange and oblique which occasional flashes of pure pop bliss. I think the overall issue with this album is that its a real grower and it requires you listen to it as an album rather than as a collection of songs, which goes counter to popular trends. But once you hear the whole thing through 3-4 times, suddenly it becomes great. After 20 listens it became easily my favorite album of the past year, and maybe a few years before that too. One I’m sure I’ll still be listening to in ten years.
Junip “Junip” Jose Gonzales’ band, and it’s great. I saw a Venn diagram that showed this as the baby of Four Tet and Nick Drake and I won’t disagree. Quietly brilliant and also well worth multiple listens
MIA “Matangi” the most consistently good album she’s done since “Arular” and also the one that has the strongest sense of fun. I really didn’t enjoy her past album but everything that glimmered at possibly being interesting there has been polished and refined here.
Skinny Puppy “Weapon” Its like SP discovered Portion Control all over again, easily my favorite album of theirs since their comeback and really my favorite since “Too a Dark Park”. Makes sense I’d love it as “Remission” is my favorite album of theirs.
Jon Hopkins “Immunity”. Great expansive ambient dance album with lovely haze and daze in full effect. Lovely.
Boards of Canada “Tomorrow’s Harvest”. Another slice of gauzy bliss from these perennial favorites. However, the album is much better if you skip the fourth track “Jacquard Causeway” which is just terrible IMO.
Ohm “Ohm”. A new project by Front Line Assembly’s Chris Peterson and its a great slice of industrial/ebm. But it’s mixed so carefully it is concurrently beautiful even as it grinds and stomps along. One of the best of its kind this past year.
Exit Counseling “Beyond the Threshold”. A giant sprawling double album Bandcamp find. Its early SPK noise, mixed with an old radio show opera about cult brainwashing. It’s got musique concrete at one point, old schools beats at another and straight up noise around the next corner. This tickled my personal theory that a blend of radio play and music is the perfect next step for modern opera. Brilliant.
Kanye West “Yeezus”. I love the first four tracks and enjoy the rest of the album. Kanye doing his all to kick against the pricks. After the initial rush of glory when I first got the album, it still continues to open up on further listens, a great sign.
Youth Code “Youth Code”. Sounds like really old Front line Assembly mixed with hardcore punk, what’s not for me to love? Their best song however isn’t on the album, its one the “Tiger’s Lament” single. Also, they’re great live!
Cut Copy “Free Your Mind”. The happiest and hippiest and housiest these guys have ever sounded, and I love it! Their last album was a step down from “In Ghost Colours” but this course corrects.
Little Boots “Nocturnes”. Tim Goldworthy produces Little Boots and its as good as I’d hoped it would be.
Disclosure “Settle”. Might have ended up higher on the list but even though I bought it within a few days of it coming out after enjoying their earlier singles, I didn’t fully get into this until a few weeks back. However, once I got into it, I really got into it. Great dance music, timeless and yet totally up to date- which is not an easy feat.
The Pharmakon album sounds great but I haven’t spent enough time with it to count it yet. Front line Assembly, Factory Floor and Pan-America would have made the top 13 on a lesser year, all great releases.
