TKK 9/12/12

I decided to make a new thread about last night. As I had mentioned before they had a contest on facebook and twitter for a meet & greet before the show. Whoever generated the most activity from the tour (likes, hashtags comments) would get in. On facebook you had to use the timeline cover with the tour date on it. As soon as I got word of the contest I was on it. I was sharing status updates from the tour profile, different (and rare) TKK footage, as well as footage from the opening band Left Spine Down who were pretty cool. Not sure if you guys would be into them though.

Well I was having problems with activity. I was posting hella shit and not getting many likes. I then took my posts to the Wax Trax group on facebook and had a little luck there. It didn’t matter cuz I got an email from Kaine of LSD saying I won. He didn’t get back to me with any details til it was time for me to leave. The last email he sent me said that TKK hadn’t shown up yet and I’m thinking to myself are they gonna be asshole rock stars about this. I get to the DNA Lounge (the venue where it all took place) and saw Kaine right away. The chick at the door didn’t know there was a meet and greet , but me and a few others just went in like it was normal.

I get in and spotted Groovie right away. Of course I jumped at the chance to introduce myself. I ended up chatting with him quite a bit. I mentioned how I got into TKK about missing Retrospectacle. His classic response “Yeah we were on that label. Not Just Al. I’m the one who introduced him to Dannie and Jim. That’s the real story.” I mentioned that I liked RevCo and he then brought up the Jaime Duffy show and asked me if I liked any of his music. I said no. If any of you guys ever meet me in person I can do a pretty dead on imitation of him talking about Jaime saying “You can’t drink and do the pills man.” You could probably imagine how it sounds. I mention how it’s cool that TKK still plays shit that people wanna hear unlike Ministry. Another classic quote, “Yeah I know their show. It’s just loud cringy noise.” He walked off mid conversation and then went by the merch booth. I then started talking to him again and showed me the limited edition posted and he asked me if I was sure I wanted to buy it before the show cuz it might get ripped. I ended up getting the posted for free. The shirt I initially wanted to buy was a girl shirt and he offered to sell it to me anyways haha. Last thing I asked him was if he still talks to Chris Connelly. He said yeah and we talked about his book. Groovie said he was very flattered buy it. I then see Buzz McCoy walk up to the merch booth. I didn’t recognize him at first cuz he’s hella skinny in person and also looks pretty old.

Now for the show. Here’s the setlist. There were a few songs I don’t know, so I’ll be leaving them out.

Scene One, Seen Em All
A Daisy Chain 4 Satan
Badlife
Rivers Of Blood, Years Of Darkness
Gateway To Hell
Easy Girl
Sex On Wheelz
The Velvet Edge
Apollo 69
The Days Of Swine & Roses
The Untouchable Class
Sexy Sucker
After The Flesh

Encore:
Glamour Is A Rocky Road
Kooler Than Jesus/Cuz It’s Hot

When I bought the shirt Groovie gave me 2 stickers for free. I put them on the front of the stage and some chick grabs them and starts showing them off to people. I nearly got into an argument with her over it but I ended up giving her one of the stickers and we talked for a bit. During Kooler Than Jesus she starts trying to get in front of and had to be like hell fucking no. I gave you a fucking sticker personally given to me by fucking Groovie Mann! What more do you want fat ass! Aside from her I talked to a hot old school goth chick who ended up giving me a kiss for protecting her when the pit broke during After the Flesh.

Show ends and the DJs are still playing music. Every Day Is Halloween comes on and I’m on the floor dancing my ass off after getting down to TKK. I hung around cuz Groovie said he’d come out and sign shit after the show. I went to go talk to Kaine to tell him great job and says “hold on, I’m gonna get you backstage.” Got my posters signed by both bands. Talked to Buzz. Asked him if he thought of doing a tour to play Good Spirits in it’s entirety next year for the 25th anniversary. He said maybe. I also told him how happy I was to hear Easy Girl. I guess I’m part of the majority of people requesting that song. I asked Groovie if I could get a beer.
Groovie: “Do you have a bottle opener”
“No”
“Then you can’t have one.”
I didn’t take him serious and found a bottle opener. I then had bassist Mimi Star and the newest Bomb Gang Girl Beki Colada sign my poster. Mimi is a hot asian that can barely speak english and Beki is a hot blonde aussie. Mimi sneezed and I said gesundheit. All she could make out was sundheit. She had never heard that before obviously. I told her it was german and she assumed I was german. I then went to where Groovie was sitting after he sparked up some weed. He looks at me and says “What do you want.” He was just being sarcastic I found out. I asked him if he was gonna come out with a book. He said he started on one 4 years ago and he wants to call it My Life Without The Thrill Kill Kult. He also rambled on about a bunch of other shit which was funny to observe. At one point he wanted to go to a bar. I told him there was a bar across the street and he asked if it was a tranny bar. He then went on about ho trannies freak him out. He also talked about doing a lot of Quaaludes which made me wish I was around for those. I did see him drink a corona, but I think he’s more of a stoner than anything else. I’ll post a pic with me, him and the ladies later.

I’m leaving little details out, but overall this is the most fun I’ve had at a show in a long fucking time. I was supposed to get a VIP thing but they never came in. Kaine said he’ll mail one to me as soon as they come in. If I get it before the LA show I might just have try and get backstage again.

Wow, that sounds like a hella good time. They sounded alright? Last time I saw them it was meh. And no Levi on bass? Interesting.

Sounded great! Mimi played some songs different. Swine & Roses had a completely different bass line but it still sounded good. Badlife was altered a bit too.

Awesome thread. Awesome time.

Groovie sounds like the funnest guy in the world. [:)]

nice dude.

Great story! Thanks for sharing.

Sweet. Groovie’s a cool dude. I talked to him for a bit when he was in Milwaukee touring with Lords of Acid.

I was taken off a bit when he said I couldn’t have a beer but I knew better. His stoned ramblings were pretty funny. I felt a little awkward sitting in there but it’s not like Groovie is too much of a rock star. I just kinda laughed whenever he said something remotely funny. At one point he said “Look at me I’m drinking and I don’t even drink.”

EDIT: Here’s the only clip from the show I’ve been able to find.

Corrected setlist. Sez Who is off of the Bomb Gang Girlz album A Taste 4 Trouble. I still don’t know what song that was in the middle of Scene One and Daisy Chain. Probably just an extended intro.

Cool setlist. A lot of great tracks there. Big fan of “Velvet Edge” and “Glamor…”

Both songs from Hit & Run Holiday sounded better live. Especially Glamour. Velvet Edge was cut short for some reason. I did leave out a couple details from my backstage tale. I told Buzz this show gives me hope of one day making it in the music industry. He asked me what I do and I gave the wrong answer by saying I only make music at school. He didn’t respond. But we did talk more when I said I liked that the setlist wasn’t predictable and that I liked that they played my one request of Easy Girl. Apparently, they get a lot of requests for that one. I saw Buzz again at the pizza place next door and then plugged my project. He said he’d look out for it. I’ll take that with a grain of salt.

By the way, if you’re ever in San Francisco and see a show at the DNA Lounge they have a 24 hour pizza place next door. Everything’s overpriced but it’s good pizza and they always show random obscure music videos on the tvs in there. Sometimes they mix in some mainstream shit like Lady Gaga but you’ll see a lot of obscure shit and old MTV ads.

Here’s a couple of clips from the show.

I don’t know how to post pics on here. I got one from the crowd and one backstage with Groovie, Beki Colada and Mimi Star.

Its pretty easy. Just get the picture url and past it here.

That’s really cool, Eureka!

I don’t know who is who in TKK, but I met Frankie and some other cat in '04. I was having a great time hanging with the Jourgensens and Scaccia on their tour bus and skipped both the openers (Hansel und Gretyl and TKK). I guess it was after TKK’s set and Frankie and partner stumble into Al’s bus. Al shouted back to Adrienne “Adrienne, come on out! Uncle Frankie’s here!” but she didn’t really seem to care.

There was a bottle of wine (one of a few) that Al had opened and Frankie saw it and giggled like a little kid and proclaimed, “YYYYyaaaaayyy!!! Punch!!!” and then proceeded to chug straight from the bottle. He and his buddy were pretty touchy and friendly with each other and seemed like a couple of drunken lunatic homos, but they were cool and quite funny.

I heard TKK were terrible on that tour, but I didn’t see 'em myself. I do regret not watching HuG’s set and I heard nothing but massive praise for them on that tour.

“Drunken Lunatic Homos” should be the name of their next album.

TKK have never been on my must-see list. Always was a casual fan who loved the WaxTrax! stuff and never bothered to explore any further, then heard lots of varying reports of the quality of their performances throughout the years, ranging from “best industrial band still playing” to “should have quit years ago”. Seems they’re in top form this tour, I know I enjoyed myself.

From Brick by Brick a month ago:

Left Spine Down were abysmal. I can understand liking this sort of post-nu metal if your tastes are of the teenage and less nuanced but it was extremely obnoxious. Frontman jumped into the crowd and tried doing call and response with members of the audience. Failed. Final straw was their cover of “She’s Lost Control”.

Groovie is one hell of a frontman, projecting the sleaze with enough conviction to make me believe. Drum setup was interesting. All the kicks/low end were coming from Buzz’s end from what I could tell and he augmented the programmed with the snap the live version needs. Again, glad I caught this band with a good lineup.

Tia Carrere did a fine job providing eye candy and I didn’t notice the one and only Charles Levi’s absence until she did the unpardonable and tweaked the bassline to “Swine and Roses”. Even with that, it was a rush to hear it live as it’s a classic. Eureka’s setlist is 100% accurate. I don’t believe there were any deviations. Tying this into Ministry, Al could learn from what they played. A few new ones, deep cuts, fan favorites, undeniable classics.

Will definitely consider seeing them again in the future.
