I thought I would post this because it might save someone here a little money. If you have Time Warner Cable, or maybe others, and they are making you pay for your cable modem then you can buy your own and save some money. I checked my bill the other day and the fee is $8/month or almost $100/yr. I went on ebay and bought a refurbished cable modem for $50 so I will make my money back after 6 months.
Here is the scam part. I also have phone service through them and it connects through the same box. They let me KEEP the same box for free to use for my phone service. So, even though I was paying $8/month to lease a cable modem box from them, I am still keeping it and don’t have to pay a penny. So, for what was I paying $8/month?!?! Who knows. Anyway, now I am using their box for free so they can suck it.
It’s probably better not to use their box if you don’t have to.
They made a deal with my former apartment complex and all tenants were required to pay for Time Warner, whether they wanted it or not.
Anyways, the complex paid Time Warner and I paid the complex. The box belonged to the complex, since they owned the individual account and not me.
I was told to leave the box in the apartment when I moved out. Time Warner hounded me for MONTHS and threatened me with fees unless I returned their box. I literally explained the situation to them dozens of times. I finally paid them to get them to shut up.
But yeah, what DJ said. Don’t pay for the box if you don’t have to. Time Warner are a bunch of pricks. I’ll celebrate the day when Google Fiber rids the world of those scammy filthy S.O.B.'s.

They tried to do that at my wife’s complex with direct tv before we were married. We raised a big old stink cause that violates antitrust laws. I dont know how they get away with it.
I ditched my company provided modem a couple years ago. For the longest time was $2/month rental. I thought about getting my own modem but at that rate it just wasn’t enough to motivate me.
My cable provider decided that they wanted to be like Krapcast and start jacking up “fees” for their gear. It got up to $8/month and that was the fire that I needed. As soon as I saw the bill, I went over to Newegg and purchased my own modem. Thieves.
