This is why I'm never around these days.

Smallish minds, huh? Well, at least I know you’re not talking about me. My brain is enormous. So much so that my skull is paper thin to accommodate its massive girth without causing any distortion of my beautiful head.

Well, anyway, preach on, Sistah! Smallish minds can all kiss my whitish ass.

hey icepick. thanks for calling me a lady.(i guess)i don’t like labels so i abuse them constantly. “dumbass” comes to mind for the smallish minded sorts around here.there are a few of those rather small minds… not many. i wish you well. peace. and i WILL send you something. if your first name is miguel.

Glad it all ended happily for you Gerda. Now we can all go back to pretending we don’t find your posts rambling and unstable.

Also, take it from me - prescription medication is not the answer.

hey icepick, send afra your street address. thanks.

ICEPICK;

Dildo: You’ve no idea how badly I’d like to do this, but I’d really dig a bit more formal schooling before I do that. Nothing inspires creativity and evolution in technique better than someone telling you that you suck and then SHOWING you how you suck.

Give it a go, but if it ain’t for you, it ain’t the end of the world.

I ditched the conservatorium after 8 months. The most talented of my mates are self taught, both in music and art. One of them got rejected by an art school and called a ‘no talent’. Now he’s doing exhibitions in Russia and New York.

Knowing the technicalities is useful, but the sort of ego trippin that comes with the pedagogy in those institutions sort of kills it. Yer better off going the way of the autodidact and sussin out yer local library and hanging with like minded individuals.

Especially, the latter, now that I think of it. Since I took music seriously, I’ve found that it’s pretty much what my social life revolves around. The conversations and stuff you do with those people informs your music and your learning something new every time you see them, especially if it’s an older crowd. They always want to help you, if they are decent people.

That said, I do commend you on doing what you’re doing. Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t you working with like, thermal detonators or large hadron colliders or something? And givin’ that up for tunes? HELL yes. Thing is, you kick ass, and I’m not there yet.

It was nothing major. I’m doing a science degree and I’m finally about to wrap it up. I went to the Australian Synchrotron for a bit of experience. It’s part of studying physics, and most students are offered the opportunity. It’s sort of like their way of sussing out who does or doesn’t want to study this at a post-grad or research level.

I enjoyed it. The synchrotron there accelerates electrons, and the radiation is harnessed for further research. In my group’s case, we studied x-ray fluoroscent spectroscopy- which consisted of firing a beam line at a sample and analysing the emitted spectra to determine the chemical composition of the material. It was interesting, but…

it made me realise it’s not my sort of thing. I have respect for anyone who decides it’s what they want to do with their life, but part of doing my science degree was realising what I’m actually built for and being able to pursue that knowing I have a degree to fall back on and get some shitty job so I can have tomato sauce with my two minute noodles every night.

Channel that science into the most terrifyingly ridiculous musical project ever. Do it. Now.

Gerda: My name’s not Miguel. [:(]

It’s funny you say that. I’ve got a couple of ideas, but what’s stopping me at the moment is a lack of money. I was going to commit to one simple demonstration where I used a signal generator to generate infinite drones thru a guitar, but… no $$$ atm.

I had bigger plans (that one is ridiculously simple), but they would’ve required further study. I’m not sure I’m going to both with postgrad stuff, and I’m too focussed on the technical aspects of classical piano to really want to bother with anything else technical.

icepick, send your real name over to afra. thanks.
