Others I think that deserve recognition (besides the obvious like Under Pressure):

New Order’s Regret lifted from The Pretenders Talk Of The Town.
Nirvana’s Come As You Are lifted from Killing Joke’s Eighties.
Ministry’s Filth Pig similar to Melvin’s Night Goat.
Ministry’s Scarecrow similar to Led Zeppelin’s When The Levee Breaks.
Ministry’s Bloodlines similar to Ministry’s So What

Anymore?

Under Pressure was directly sampled, so it doesn’t count.

But here’s some that do:

NIN’s A Warm Place from Bowie’s Crystal Japan

RHCP’s Californication from Petty’s Last Dance With Mary Jane (I think that was it - I’m not going to look it up)

Metallica’s Sanitarium from The Strawbs’ Down By the Sea

Ministry’s Stigmata from Big Black’s song I can’t remember the name of

Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows from Disney, Roky Erickson, Black Sabbath, and others I can’t remember

That’s all I got off the top of my head.

FLA’s Mindphaser copied quite a bit from New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle.

Ministry’s Bloodlines similar to Ministry’s So What - am I the only one who sees this?

The Cure - In Between Days/New Order - Dreams Never End
New Order - All The Way/The Cure - Just Like Heaven

1002

Ministry’s Supermanic Soul similar to Therapy?'s Knives.

bloodlines - so what - bella lugosis’s dead

Flaming Lips ‘Fight Test’ ripped off a Cat Stevens track.

Butthole Surfers’ ‘Dum Dum’ ripps off Black Sabbath’s ‘Children Of The Grave’.

Ministry’s ‘NWO’ ripps off the guitar riff from Slayer’s ‘South Of Heaven’ track - apparently South Of Heaven was on heavy rotation in the studio during the Psalm 69 sessions, or so I have heard.

R. Kelly’s Ignition (Remix) and Akon’s Don’t Matter.

uh… shit, wrong forum… [:)]

No, Dude, it’s there! I didn’t know you could rip off your own stuff though.

Little known example of riff ‘theft’:

Korn’s “Ball Tongue” riff is stolen from Morbid Angel’s “Angel of Disease”

So I think the Big Black track in question that people think sounds like Stigmata is Racer X. I don’t think the tracks are that close (not as close as Night Goat to Filth Pig anyway) but the drum beats are pretty similar (though Racer X is a much slower track).

Ministry’s Supermanic Soul similar to Therapy?'s Knives.

Definitely. Though I’d still prefer Supermanic there sure is a resemblance.

Other than the ones already mentioned there are bits of songs that are lifted from others:

1,000 Homo Dj’s ‘Better Ways’ uses guitars from Joy Division’s ‘Atrocity Exhibition’

Mogwai’s ‘I Love You, I’m Going To Blow Up Your School’ uses a riff from Tool’s ‘Sober’.

Also when it comes to generic metal its a matter of who got their first as its pretty limited, eg. Slayer and Metallica are always going to have the edge on any speed metal from 90s onwards

bloodlines - so what - bella lugosis’s dead

wizard of sextown - bloodlines - so what - bella lugosis’s dead

Metallica’s Enter Sandman and Excel’s Tapping Into The Emotional Void

Dani california sounded alot like tom petty by coincidence

fear factory resurrection and godfleshes xnyobis… the whole reach for the sky thing sounds a little too familiar… and given FF covered head of david i think he’s a JB fan…

RATM Guirilla radio rips off RATM vietnow

the look of the mechanical animals album booklet reminds me of the OK computer booklet… plus manson was (still is?) a huge radiohead fan

Burton C. Bell is a well known JKB fan. He used to be on the blurb sticker that came on the wrapper of Godflesh’s Hymns CD.

Melvin’s ‘A History of Bad Men’ similar to Ministry’s ‘Filth Pig’… but I guess everyone knows what ‘Filth Pig’ sounds like.
