So its like rice or meat or its a sauce? What is it ?
Curry is kind of a catch-all. There is a plant called curry, but curry powder can be one of any number of different spice blends. When people say “I want a curry”, they just mean one of any number of “curry” spiced dishes. Typically, with Indian food that is meat or vegatables cooked in a spicy sauce of varying levels of hotness and type of base (butter based, oil based, yogurt based). That gets served alongside various types of rice dishes and types of flatbread. In Thai food, you generally get a soupier spicy sauce with a coconut milk base with meat or tofu, and veggies, especially peppers, with a big ball of sticky rice on the side. People that say they “hate curry” in my opinion just haven’t tried the right dishes. Some of it is super mind blowing spicy hot, some of it is just buttery and savory. Buffet is the way to go with Indian food I think because there will always be one dish you like. With Thai it is hard to go wrong with the curry dishes in my experience. Some people CAN get the runs from certain spice blends they aren’t used to. Curry haters love to talk about how they get the shits from Indian food.
Agreed, chicken tikka masala with naan and basmati rice are my favorites. I also like a bunch of the vegetable curries (peas, potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, etc.) and the crispy, battered-fried spinach and/or sliced potatoes. The desserts are also tasty, rice pudding, dough balls, pistachio-topped sweets, etc.
I sometimes buy a frozen entrée chicken tikka masala made by Tandoor Chef. I buy that brand instead of the other brands due to the quality and quantity of the chicken being better.
I forget the brand, but the Indian/paki grocery store by me carries frozen samosas with chicken tikka Masala inside. So. Fucking. Good.
The samosas sound delicious. Next time I am in St. Louis (April), I might have to track those down.
Tikka means bits that have been cooked in the tandoor oven (think the taste of brick oven pizza vs. regular pizza). The naan is stuck to the walls of the tandoor oven to cook. Masala is the mix of spices used and it varies from region to region. I have also had paneer (cheese) tikka masala in the vegetarian-only Indian restaurant. These dishes have a yogurt base vs coconut (some curry) or tomato (butter chicken).
I’m not sure it is so much the spices as it is one particular ingredient that is giving people the squirts: I have a couple food allergies and the only time I get the squirts is if I happen to get sodium bisulfite or a sulfate in my food. It is most commonly found on lettuce (check), dried fruits (check), shrimp, pickled items, processed meats, lemon juice (check), and sriracha sauce (maybe).

Cool, thanks for the education. I’ve always heard about curry but I don’t think anywhere in my city serves it.

Grumpy I can almost guarantee you will find an Indian or Thai place close to you if you look. Especially Thai, it’s trendy.
Mooney, hit me up when you’re heading out here and we’ll do lunch or something. My wife and I know a few nice spots in the county. We typically do Priyaa for Indian and Pearl Cafe for Thai. The grocery with the tikka samosas is Ambica. But yeah, we’ll kick it.

I live in a ridiculously christian fundamentalist city that swings hard core red politically. Unless it’s a burger joint or made from some part of a cow, it doesn’t exist here. but I’ll check around. Lamb does sound tasty, seems like it would be really tender.

I’ve been like two years off of smokes as of next week and haven’t had any Indian/Thai cooking in a millenia and both of those things are making me very sad right now.
Void’s making my pansy ass look extra pansy lately. [laugh]

Cheers. Will do. I have heard of Pearl Café.
I usually fly in on Wednesday morning and fly back on Sunday evening (taking the light rail into the city), but I may end up driving or flying in a day early this time. My dining options are usually limited to lunch on Wednesday, dinner on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday in downtown by the arch due to the long hours I have to put in supporting the robotics outreach event.
I’ve been to Pappy’s BBQ, Sasha’s on Shaw (in the Shaw neighborhood; about a $15 cab ride form downtown), Pi, the Sushi place across from the Embassy Suites, the wine bar in the Embassy Suites, Rooster, Bailey’s Free Range, Tigin, 400 Olive, the sports bar in the casino, and various bars on Washington. Rooster and Sasha’s would be my two recommended picks if someone was traveling to St. Louis.
Pretty much this. Although I find the thai stuff a little too acidic for my tastes. They smother that shit with lemongrass.
I love a good butter chicken, a lamb saag, some keema naan and a saffron rice. Washed down with a Mountain Goat beer.
Absolute perfection.
Pretty fattening though.[/reply]
gah, i love lemongrass. haha.
i didnt end up making curry last night. actually, we made quinoa/buckwheat/vegetable pulp patties with some fava bean flour, did them up on a griddle and then cut up some avecado and kale and put it all on some sourdough bread. killer sandwiches.
i have to go get coconut milk before i can make curry.
There’s stuff you can leave out that makes it a lot healthier, i only ever add coconut milk once in a while, although i do love it and it’s delicious! Mine are usually tomato-based, with sliced chicken fillets and loads of spices, chillis, peppers, peas, carrots and sometimes potato. I normally put in some low-fat yoghurt to cool it down if i have guests who don’t like it too spicy. Good stuff, so cheap to make a big pot of it. Oh, and i buy a 5KG bag of rice every so often to go with my curry and my chilli that i make, lasts forever.
Any plans for Halloween. I know it’s probably over for some of you in other countries, but what’s everyone doing/what’s everyone done this year? I’m pretty much broke, so I’m going to my my old place I used to live. Sober good time this year. Was gonna go to SF, but I don’t feel like being out there all night. There’s a Creature Feature going on at the Great American Music Hall I may go to tomorrow night; they’re showing The Shining and the original Haunting. I may have movie marathon of my own tonight with Halloween 4, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, and the Beavis & Butt-Head Halloween Special.
Just thought I’d detour the conversation from Curry since I don’t eat it.
