The Solar Freaking Highway!!!

Is this bullshit or real? How much would this thing cost? how long would it take to redo everything? I think it’s cool as shit!

I knew i’d heard of this before, it was on the BBC a few weeks ago. Sounds pretty cool!

What happens when it snows and the plows scratch it up of break the panels? Also, once the panels get a nice coating of road grime their efficiency goes way down. Driving on solar panels just doesn’t seem like a good idea to me.

Embedding plastic pipes in asphalt that heat up water seems like a better idea.

you didn’t watch the video did you? no more snow plows.
although you make a great point about the road grime.
Prologue makes several good points too. Damn I WANT THIS if for no other reason than freaking TRON!! [pirate]

I’d read that glow in the dark paint a while back, but it’s not the same as the SOLAR FREAKING ROAD WAY!

I would also be concerned about fire in particular. One good carbq and the whole road could burn.

[:(]

I’m really interested to see where it goes from here now that it’s funded. Obviously it’s not going to happen overnight, but as they start testing it out (a parking lot here, a driveway there) hopefully they’ll figure out if it’s working or not. It looks like really smart design, so I like to think that they’ll be able to adjust based on what they learn from test sites. I’m optimistic.

HA! HA! Take that prologue!!
I’m on Hanlon’s fan club now!

Me and my buddies over at Woodside Petroleum think it’s a terrible idea.

Hippie.

Frankly I’m shocked the Petrolium/electric companies haven’t lobbied to get this banned.

I still can’t get past the snow/ice/plow factor. If it is snowing and cold, then it is very likely to be cloudy and dark and those cells won’t be putting out any power to keep themselves heated. It also takes a lot of power to heat something with a lot of surface area to above freezing when it is 0 degrees outside. I have my doubts that a 3ft by 3ft solar cell will even put out enough energy to keep itself above freezing. How many watts does a panel that size put out? 135 watts on a very sunny day when the cell is nice and clean is my estimate based on this:

http://www.harborfreight.com/45-watt-solar-panel-kit-68751-8527.html

Just guestimating, based on this:
http://www.solarpowerrocks.com/solar-basics/how-do-solar-panels-work-in-cloudy-weather/

I’ll say that the cell will put out 10% of that 135W in winter when it is snowing which is 13.5watts. Straight up G, that isn’t to going to keep ice off of it.[/reply]
Boooooo you and your research and reasonable concerns [pirate]
I really want America to have this exactly as it’s described.
